I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

LANSING, Mich. — “Squad” member Rashida Tlaib won a challenge for her House seat in Michigan’s primary, in a rematch with the woman she narrowly defeated two years ago.
Tlaib, one of the first two Muslim women in Congress, easily secured likely re-election to the 13th District in and around Detroit. Her opponent in Tuesday's primary was Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones, who lost by 1 percentage point in 2018 when the primary field was larger. Jones on the same day defeated Tlaib to later fill out the remainder of John Conyers’ term.

Tlaib, 44, will face an underdog Republican candidate in November.
I thought she came from a majority black district and still wins lol.

I see the House ethics committee continues to be about as useful as a Karen called on to discipline her hellchild.

This is fine! New York wasn't expecting the wealthy to actually leave.

Now it's starting to look like New York is going to lose TWO congress seats thanks to a huge number of census forms not being completed and population loss. Double whammy lol

Ilhan Omar won her primary tonight.

The squad is the future of the democratic party as either we could be seeing two things.

A certain portion of White America really believes in national suicide for the nation as their guilt is so fucking big.

Or the moderates and centrist democrats are leaving the party, leaving behind more and more hardcore and emboldened leftists to give us the next generation of Maxine Waters and Nancy Pelosis.

I’m starting to think that any of the squad’s primary wins might be a sign that their districts have a high risk of flipping red. The voters that would normally vote them out in a primary may have already made their minds up to just pull the red line this November.

I accept all optimism ratings.

I think it's proof that incumbency is a hell of a drug, and that most people just look for the "D" or "R" and vote accordingly. The finer points of policy really doesn't matter to most, the people living there are only interested in getting another "YES" vote on whatever the national "D" wants anyway.... even when they get fucked over by loss of local jobs as a result, they feel they'll eventually win if the National political machine is in blue hands. So what's it matter if YOUR particular rep/senator is a kook? Their vote still counts as "1", mission accomplished.

The only thing the reelection of the Squad is proof of is proof to the DNC which seats to eliminate after the census because they want to present a more moderate image to the nation at large.

I was kind of surprised that they were letting her speak at all, but this puts it in perspective. Probably thought they'd lose too many of The Youths if they snubbed her entirely, but this way they get it out there that she'll speak but then give her basically time to wave and maybe say how proud she is to think orange man bad.

It's sort of like tipping the waiter 5%. Just high enough to show you considered the issue, just low enough to make it clear what you thought of the service.

Pure mental illness. Why is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez even commenting on local police policy? What a waste of time.

Why is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez even commenting on local police policy?

Again, she and her supporters do not believe she has been sent to the House to represent her actual district and promote its interests. (Which is why she and her supporters don't give a shit when she's called out on completely ignoring it.) They believe that the district has handed her power over all of America, and that her job is to advance the leftist agenda using that power. Whether that agenda is helpful or hurtful towards her district is irrelevant to them. They don't even see her as a New York congressperson, and certainly not from one small chunk of it, but rather an American politician influencing America.
