The Square Enix Griefing Thread

Not surprised with the report
FFXIV = no new expansion, newest content is a 24-man raid and ultimate raid
Still no update on FF7 Remake part 2
not to mention they discontinued some of the mobile games and regular games (Babylon Falls and Outriders)
Hopefully, FF-16 can make a good sale

I actually liked the most recent one a fair bit. It was a pleasant surprise.
I'm not gonna lie, I like Star Ocean, as well as other Tri-Ace games; hell, Valkyrie Profile 2 is my #1 favorite game period, fight me in real life. The thing being, is Star Ocean always felt like a more jank Final Fantasy. Voice work, animations, story, all can be good, but there was always something about them that makes me feel "It's not as good as it could be." Of course I like the jank in the combat though, it's wild, unbalanced and can be a massive fucking mess... ... ... that I'll happily drink up again and again.

I thought the combat in this one was pretty fun. I'd like to play through it again on a PS5 and hopefully see if the frame rate is a bit better.

They're a public company. Their financials are freely available. You not liking some of their recent games is fine. You thinking that means that they are hemorrhaging money and that their doors should've been shut years ago is crazy talk, homie. They're doing fine.

Still not my point, nigga.

I wouldn't spend 80€ on a good game, let alone fucking Forspoken with its PS3 textures.

I guess 80€ is going to be their new standard price at least, just ridiclous.

I'm not interested in buying any game these days. I'm not trying to be some sigma grindset chad who'd rather exercise at a 24 Hr. Fitness while investing too much into the stock market and then go to sleep for two to four hours after staying past curfew and all (even though I wish I would), and I know some new video games can be fun. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into any video game anymore because the heart, soul and especially fun have been sucked out for the absolute worst.

The Saami Council demand Square Enix to immediately remove the Final Fantasy “Far Northern Attire”

The Saami Council has in a letter to, the media company, Square Enix demanded that they immediately remove the Final Fantasy XIV “Far Northern Attire” and engage in meaningful dialogue with the Sámi people.

– This is not about sensitivity or whether the depiction is appropriate. These elements are Sámi cultural property and Square Enix has infringed on our rights, says President of The Saami Council, Áslat Holmberg.
The Sámi people’s position has been made very clear, Holmberg continues, particularly to entertainment companies, specifically in the agreement that the Sámi people have with Walt Disney Animation Studios.

t is the position of the Sámi that their collective and individual culture, including aesthetic elements, music, language, stories, histories, and other traditional cultural expressions are property that belong to the Sámi.’

– Our cultural property rights are not theoretical. They are protected and protectable under intellectual property laws, which are generally harmonised throughout the world. Square Enix, as a media company, is highly aware of intellectual property laws and has no excuse for this blatant violation of Sámi cultural property, Holmberg continues.

The Saami Council is of the opinion that the issue is particularly damaging because Sámi clothing traditions are not merely aesthetic; they carry the significance of being specific elements of Sámi identity with meaning, content, and context. By creating this product, Square Enix has allowed their 41 million players to dress up as a Sámi people, clothe themselves in the Sámi identity without our consent, and contribute to the erosion of our culture.

While the gaming industry has become more open, welcoming, and sensitive to the needs of non-majority gamers, specifically in terms of alternative lifestyles, gender identities, and support of women gamers, the Saami Council is disappointed that Square Enix did not even lightly consider the rights of the Sámi people in relation to this product. The Saami Council emphasises that we appreciate proper and appropriate collaborations and have a deep history of finding ways to collaborate with entertainment companies on the use of sámi cultural properties. However, there is a proper and appropriate way to establish, maintain, and enforce these collaborations to ensure that all necessary elements are fulfilled.

– The Saami Council hopes that this situation will advance the discussion of the rights of indigenous people to their cultural properties and looks forward to a productive dialogue with all industries, Holmberg concludes.

That is not how IP law works. You can't own a culture or aspects of a culture. Nobody owns the rights to the kimono, or to Spaghetti, for instance. A "culture" can't own anything. IP is owned by individuals and organizations. If that costume violates someone's copyright, point to the copyright in question and who owns it.
