The Saami Council demand Square Enix to immediately remove the Final Fantasy “Far Northern Attire”

The Saami Council has in a letter to, the media company, Square Enix demanded that they immediately remove the Final Fantasy XIV “Far Northern Attire” and engage in meaningful dialogue with the Sámi people.

– This is not about sensitivity or whether the depiction is appropriate. These elements are Sámi cultural property and Square Enix has infringed on our rights, says President of The Saami Council, Áslat Holmberg.
The Sámi people’s position has been made very clear, Holmberg continues, particularly to entertainment companies, specifically in the agreement that the Sámi people have with Walt Disney Animation Studios.

– Our cultural property rights are not theoretical. They are protected and protectable under intellectual property laws, which are generally harmonised throughout the world. Square Enix, as a media company, is highly aware of intellectual property laws and has no excuse for this blatant violation of Sámi cultural property, Holmberg continues.

The Saami Council is of the opinion that the issue is particularly damaging because Sámi clothing traditions are not merely aesthetic; they carry the significance of being specific elements of Sámi identity with meaning, content, and context. By creating this product, Square Enix has allowed their 41 million players to dress up as a Sámi people, clothe themselves in the Sámi identity without our consent, and contribute to the erosion of our culture.

While the gaming industry has become more open, welcoming, and sensitive to the needs of non-majority gamers, specifically in terms of alternative lifestyles, gender identities, and support of women gamers, the Saami Council is disappointed that Square Enix did not even lightly consider the rights of the Sámi people in relation to this product. The Saami Council emphasises that we appreciate proper and appropriate collaborations and have a deep history of finding ways to collaborate with entertainment companies on the use of sámi cultural properties. However, there is a proper and appropriate way to establish, maintain, and enforce these collaborations to ensure that all necessary elements are fulfilled.

– The Saami Council hopes that this situation will advance the discussion of the rights of indigenous people to their cultural properties and looks forward to a productive dialogue with all industries, Holmberg concludes.
Sounds like the same kind of kvetching Lego Bionicle had with the Maori for daring to use their words. These cultures with such weak will deserve to go extinct.

Stop appropriating Jewish culture, Holmberg, or you will be hearing from everyone's lawyers.

That is not how IP law works. You can't own a culture or aspects of a culture. Nobody owns the rights to the kimono, or to Spaghetti, for instance. A "culture" can't own anything. IP is owned by individuals and organizations. If that costume violates someone's copyright, point to the copyright in question and who owns it.

If I remember correctly, as far as the US is concerned, you can make and sell dream catchers ect... as long as you don't falsely claim they were made by actual indigenous people. But no one can bar you from creating and profiting on such products just because you are the wrong ethnicity. The issue more or less has to do with authenticity. That VA that did voice work for various Working Designs games was selling fake Native American art that he claimed was drawn by real Native Americans. The fact that it's fake is the issue. Not that it's Native style art.

I'm not sure what the laws are in other countries are. But I assume that you can't really strongarm anyone with "muh culture" in any developed nation. There's probably some ass backwards dump somewhere where you get your head lopped off for wearing the wrong pattern. But no one in those places plays video games.

Not many people know about the Saami culture. I had never even heard about it until Frozen came out. Did they bitch about it then too?

Powerleveling, but as someone from the small and unknown culture I can't understang this spergery. I would love to our culture being spread and known more in the world, especially considering that this is absolutely not demeaning way to show it. Those designs are cool and respectful. Do they deliberately want to be forgotten and their culture disappear?

Shouldn't they be happy that the game is introducing more people to their culture? This is just them trying to squeeze money out of Square, not any actual care for their 'cultural identity'
Nobodyv knows who or what they are, even with their addition to FF. Them making a big stink about it is the most attention they've got in decades, I'm sure. Maybe that is really why they're doing it lol.

Those people are actually retarded and all they do is live to complain. Regular people don't care and I don't care, it's fun to see. Other than the colors the clothes don't look like traditional sami clothes in any way and men don't wear skirts/kilts.

Here is a traditional outfit and the squeenix outfit.

But I know exactly what the bee in their bonnet is, it is the hat with the earflaps. It is always that fucking hat that sets them off. Seeing someone wear it(or make it themselves) sends these loonies into a rage. It is their only claim of "cultural appropriation" that they can point to because it is the only piece of clothing non-sami think is so nice that they are willing to buy, wear themselves or dress their children in.

Here's the guy complaining btw.
