I know this is a few weeks old but it's still relevant to the thread because it's a good question. I've worked with street bums and I can answer this. I'm not from Ukraine obviously, but a bum is a bum anywhere in the world.

The short answer is that it varies from person to person, though as you might suspect suicide rates for bums are sky high.

Most bums have never known a stable life. Most didn't go to school, got kicked out of their family homes in their mid-teens or earlier (or were in the care system) and the usual teenage experimenting with drink and drugs became the centre of their lives. And once you're an addict, you're fucked and chances are you'll never get your shit together. Even the most generous of Dem Programs won't pay for booze or drugs, so you steal and shoplift. One guy I dealt with had over 300 convictions for shoplifting in 9 years (you'd think he'd get better at it with so much practice but apparently not). So you're also in and out of prison. Getting hardcore into booze and drugs in your teens fucks up your brain development, so many of these people are basically mentally children. That's why they get into so many fights, and that's why the Square Hut people seem so retarded and immature, even when sober (of course their mothers were probably addicts while pregnant too). So chaos is all they've known, and so far as they know, is all that there is. So being on the street is just another phase before they end up in a shelter (until they get evicted for dealing or fighting) or in prison again. I can't imagine that the Square Hut is any worse than a Ukrainian prison, or getting bombed by the Russians in a trench in Donbas.

Some bums actually prefer the lifestyle. Not so much the ones on the streets (though maybe for some of them) but the ones who live in a tent in the woods. Even in rich Western countries, some of these people disappear off the map for decades, living off-grid. That is of course until they age and can't get medical treatment, or are so crazy that they won't get it (see Stone Man Warrior for an example). The lucky ones end up in shelters, the unlucky ones die of gangrene in a thicket and their skeletons are found years later.

I think a lot of comfortable, Western people never realise just how powerful the instinct to survive is, because they have never had their own put to the test. A lot of bums have dreadful mental health problems, sometimes those problems are what made them homeless in the first place, sometimes they developed them from substance abuse. Many are suicidal to some degree 24/7. But they are also tough as old boots and their will keeps them going. Sometimes it's hope of better times, sometimes it's cultural or religious aversion to suicide. Maybe they have family they don't want to let down. Trannies, by contrast, are almost all rich, pampered urbanites who have never encountered hardship, and many don't survive the shock of realising that destroying their bodies and lives didn't solve their problems and alienated them socially and kill themselves in droves. But if you're a grizzled junkie who has lived in a shop doorway for a decade you develop a similar sort of plot armour the way lolcows do. These people are really fucking tough.

Most urban street bums actually have rich social lives. One street bum will have a backstory and personal outlook very much like the next street bum, so they form very close social bonds and lifelong friendships. Every town and city with a decent homeless population will have its own homeless "community". Having strong social ties is a powerful way to keep yourself alive and to some extent fulfilled as a human being, even if you're sleeping in a bin, because you're sleeping in a bin next to friends or even a partner who understands you. Until you get drunk and stab them, but that's the thug life I guess. Many of us would rather sleep under the stars with friends than in a mansion all alone.

They beat the shit out of and hurt each other constantly. Only thing that's really censored is activities that could be deemed sexual, like "torpedos" in the ass, full nudity.

Quite a few were getting a go with a the shock collar, Anton however fought and ran from them and wouldn’t put it on at all.
Kristina put it on and danced to a whole song without showing any pain, then they realised maybe it hadn’t been working that time, tried it on two other people again, then back on her and it seemed to work again. She does seem to be able to cope with more shit for some reason, maybe from her background?

I am guessing he has some kinda trauma with it the way he was actually fighting Fresya, or could just be the collar.
