Yeah true. You can definitely see the character slowly mellow out over the course of the original run, only to finally end up with goofier version at the very end that would be kept for Shin Lupin a few years later.I would like to think most people here know who Lupin the Third is, and how Miyazaki changed his character.
The first book was pretty incoherent, tbh. Feels like an entirely different character from other iterations.
I've seen a lot of people whine over Miyazaki's "softening" of Lupin's character, but imo when you read the manga you can easily see that Monkey Punch himself was going in that direction, and if anything without that there's a good chance the series would have never lasted this long. I sometimes miss ballsy Lupin, but as a whole it definitely helped making the character more endearing.
Same thing they did with Jigen, with him starting out as just a goofy idiot and then slowly turning into the more serious character that ended up becoming so popular in the anime.
Admittedly it's a little weird to see him and Lupin switch roles (from comic relief to straight-man) but it feels more natural that way.
