Now that Touhou is officially on steam and 15.5 is coming out soon I feel like this thread is appropriate.

What the fuck is a 'Touhou' and why do I keep hearing about it?
Touhou Project is a long running series of bullet hell games, all made by ZUN (Team Shanghai Alice), about little girls in weird clothes that like to shoot each other. The series takes place in the fantastical country of Gensoukyou where a genocidal shrine maiden and her kleptomaniac friend beat up anyone that tries to take over. The universe expands across several games, comics, and literature.

Why should I care?
Touhou has a bit of something for everyone. It's a challenging game for those that like to test their skills. The world of Touhou has a deep lore that you can immerse yourself into. The girls are all unique and you're bound to find at least one character to like.

How do I get into Touhou?
The best way to start is by playing the games themselves; Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night, and Mountain of Faith are the most beginner friendly. Jumping straight into the manga or books can confuse you since they rely on you already having background knowledge.
You can familiarize yourself using the wiki if you're bad at bullet hell games.

I've been playing touhou for 6 years, and I can 1cc most games on lunatic, but it's not my favorite danmaku franchise; even if, not counting things I played on NES in early childhood, it was my first one and made me fall in love with japan and danmaku itself.

Touohu games are getting worse and worse since th09; the aesthetic, the most important thing in bullet hell game, is lost; no amount of gameplay mechanics can make up for that. Zun forgot what made his games, or what makes all bullet hell games, fun and memorable.

I'd rather play pc-98 games over the newest garbage. th03, phantasmagoria of dimension dream, is my favourite th game ever.

I realize I haven't played a game since TH12. As a result, I'm locked out of the loop in regards to the characters and memes.

13: Prince Shoutoku and his two goons come back from the dead with the help of a chinese necromancer.

13.5: An autistic girl loses her favorite mask and goes berserk.

14: A tiny princess is taken advantage of by a contrarian and accidentally powers up all the bullied kids.

14.3: Said contrarian becomes a fugitive and has to out-dodge everybody.

14.5: A nerd tries to be in with the cool group and ends up annoying everyone. Also urban legends have come to life.

15: A single mom takes revenge on the moon for killing her son with the help of her fashionista friend and a legion of cute fairies. This prompts the moon people to start destroying Earth.

15.5: People are swapping bodies and Tenshi is there.

16: An attentionwhore makes a big show of herself by releasing everyones true potential, simultaneously hosts a job interview. Her two underlings like to dance behind you without your knowledge. Also brown Cirno.

You're caught up now.

You didn't lose anything, it's only gotten worse since then and th06, 07 and 08 characters are still the most popular ones

Maybe that's because the characters from those games have been around the longest and are the most established? Just because you don't like it doesn't mean there's not something Titor might enjoy in the new games.

Mima has been the longest yet she never came back after th05. Your point is irrelevant.
 
The only thing I know about the game is this song, which drives me mad. My boyfriend had it set on his computer as a screensaver for a while. So whenever I wanted to nap or we had a quiet moment it'd go off on full blast, ruining the mood. He eventually took it off when I yelled at him to make his little girl game shut up.

imo, I think they started getting worse after th13; characters that came after th09 are still well liked, but anything after 13 hasn't really garnered much attention aside from probably the clown fairy in th15.

The newer characters aren't being expanded upon enough, which makes them less popular. That, and perhaps the oversaturation of female characters is wearing the series down now and I hope ZUN finally adds a male character to the games to spice things up; there's too many to keep track of, many which have very one dimensional personalities or are an inferior clone of an older character. And there's also Kancolle, which appeals more to those who only care about porn.

Aesthetic-wise, the music has been going downhill for sure. They loose more of that feel that the original games had for a variety of sounds that don't fit well together.

The music is downhill, and character designs too. They don't even try to look like Victorian dolls now.
The aesthetic artsy backgrounds replaced by literal backgrounds that leave nothing to imagination.
And don't even get me started on Clownpiece, she's just popular because she's wearing american flag. Of semi popular new characters I'd rather list Nue or Kokoro, but even they are not as popular as the older ones. Nowadays we get like one or maybe two memorable characters per game, before that it was maybe one or two characters who weren't memorable and well received by the fanbase(letty whiterock, maybe medicine melancholy? singular examples, really. And I really like Medicine).

Even pc-98 characters, as forgotten as they are, were much better. I really like Mima, Yumemi and Elen, and the others, and unfortunately it seems they will never come back.
