The Tumblr Files - Official Thread (Case I: Steven Universe) - An exposé on the media and people that destroyed the Internet

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Given how much time Toby spent online during the halcyon days of the Internet, from Starmen.net, to the MSPA forums, to other places like Twitter and potentially Something Awful, he had a firm grasp on how to properly portray the Internet “vibe.”
And before you ask, I will play Deltarune when it's done.
He really does, which is why its worth mentioning that you'll be able to see that more in a certain character in Deltarune's second chapter. I don't want to give away too much but chances are you already know who I'm refering to because of how viral the character got.
And in this case I don't mind whatsoever, even if Toby clearly put in a lot of lore bait again.
I have issues with some aspects of Toby's writing in other areas but I genuinely enjoyed what he created with that character. It'd easy to just say its "lol random" writing but he put a lot of twists and humor in that created a really memorable and unique amalgamation of traits unlike anything else I've seen.

That Undertale's popularity was potentially astroturfed to some degree or another does not really surprise me, seeing how there's absolutely nothing groundbreaking about it other than mediocre, weird postmodernist deconstruction of video game mechanics and tropes. That and making furfaggotry mainstream.

Yet another reason why the 2010s was an absolute cultural dumpster fire.
I'd like to thank @I_Am_Not_Bruce_Willis for explaining why I have a huge problem with Der Untergang/The Wintergun. While I give props to Mr. Fox and don't really blame fans for liking the game - hell I follow the thread here on the site - I don't like the postmodernist take and the "random funny and who cares, nothing matters anyway".

My takeaway: I said on the thread Toby Fox doesn't take the series seriously. What I meant by that was to me it seemed like a meta-game/commentary on how being random and "nothing matters, really" and how you have control of everything. But at the same time you don't, because a game is limited to what he built up. It has that... annoying fucking progressive tone that shitlibs from 2010s were all over and I just can't fucking take it. I can't put it in words, but it's very hard to explain.
Another thing I was wondering: Chara. Who is he? Why did he want to kill the world in Genocide? Did he kill humans too? What is the world? Why do we just explore the underground? Why do we care, anyway?

First time I heard of Undertale was through LGR reviewing it not long after it came out. He sung its praises but I didn't really see much of what the big deal was about it and I thought it would just be another forgotten game. Guess I was fucking wrong on that one.

I remember in some forums how even mentioning playing Utale Genocide would make people foam at you as you do say here, which made feel weird and wonder WTF is going on back then as it's a fucking game. Which the game itself also states (except for the Genocide ending, where now everything is serious, too bad you MUST do that route to see all of the content anyway).
One thing the thesis doesn't cover is how much Utale blatantly and shamelessly stole from previous works, including ripping off A LOT of Earthbound, to the point Toby stopped posting in Starmen probably to avoid being sued (going as far as to steal a sound bit from Earthbound's final boss, delete some notes to make it barely legally distinct, and call it a day). The game Off predates Utale and there are some similarities, like a skeleton boss that is reminiscent of Papyrus IIRC, and identical plot-points (LISA from 2014 is another case, but that one was inspired more directly by Earthbound). I also remember how the damned "they" became overused everywhere after 2015. After trannies stopped being seen as a mental illness around 2018 IIRC, this behavior got worse. Oh, and Deltarune is still unfinished to this day. Back then, I thought that freeing the monsters was the "true", best ending... But over time, the disconnect from the character you play, the player, and the monsters' fucked up goals made me reconsider it. Toby realized this as Deltarune's monsters are normal and can live with humans (or at least one) just fine.

I like to think Toby didn't intend to create this massive monster, that it escaped out of his control, instead of being responsible for making the Net objectively a worse place.

EDIT:

I do recall playing the Underbound ROM, it was not too bad, actually. Shame it was never completed as far as I know, and there's a zero chance for it being completed now after Utale. I dunno if Starmen is still active or if it became a tranny-infested hell like every other forum.

You sumarized what Undertale really is: the result of derivation from obscure media by a talented person, the humor/writting style came from the mother series & contemporary internet culture , the deconstructive elements came from OFF & the miriad of experimental rpg maker games that came waaay before , the thing is that unlike the many indie developers that go batshit insane like Phil Fish, Toby is smart, way too smart for the cliques he hangs around with and thus he has been able to move up the ladder and do big stuff like getting in cahoots with sakurai and working with big companies like Nintendo

Now that Off has been brought up, does anyone remember Ib and a second game I don't recall the name but where the main character is named Aya and her mad scientist father turns out to be the enemy? Those had some real traction around the same time as Off, but idk how much relevance they had to Undertale

Yes, thank you! My GF at the time got me into a bunch of stuff like this. I played DanganRonpa when it was just a fan translaton too because of her. We split in early 2014. She was being pulled into the void while I was increasingly repelled by the increasing authoritarianism and lgbbq nonsense. Haven't had any contact since we split, looked up her Facebook a couple years later and it was gone. I strongly suspect she's an enby or pooner now.

You saw the writting on the wall and backed out in time, my condolences about your ex

I know Dangan is mentioned briefly in the case file, but I wish Bruce Willis went into a little bit more detail on it. Like the file mentions, Tumblr become totally obsessed with DR because it ticked all the boxes of what they love and started making accounts on Something Awful to read the translation. Despite Lowtax setting up the paywall, a lot of these types ended up sticking around SA and started to spread their brand of 'tism across the site. Meaning that Danganronpa, a niche Japanese-only VN, played a significant hand in the decline of Something Awful. Shit's wack.

That said I get not going into much about that because this thread is mainly going over Tumblr and its culture throughout the years.

@I_Am_Not_Bruce_Willis I wanted to add something. Yes, back in 2015 Undertale won The most hated award, but in 2024 vga's it actually scored "The least worst of the most hated games" basically the best game that was considered the worst during one of the previous vga's. It has beaten No Man's Sky actually.
