The Tumblr Files - Official Thread (Case I: Steven Universe) - An exposé on the media and people that destroyed the Internet

Honestly, how much of GamerGate will even be brought up at all?
The bare minimum. GamerGate has already been covered in far greater detail elsewhere to the point where I don't really need to explain it all over again.
If you want a definitive documentary that covers GamerGate in the most unbiased detail possible, I highly recommend AirPlay. Especially since I'm referencing it a few times in the files. The 2nd part is locked behind Patreon, so I paid for it so you don't have to.

At this point i feel that gamergate is the closest thing we have to a social cataclysm , a whole culture destroyed in a monumental disaster for which we only have half-truths, legends and innacurate retellings about how it happened
For me, it feels more like GamerGate's effects were more gradual rather than immediate, and were punctuated by other events that would happen in the following years, like #LoveWins and T-Money's election.

I can't finish this 2nd part. The constant splicing in of CRINGEASS old skeptic videos from people like Jeff Holiday, the same 2017-2018 college protest footage that everyone's already seen a bajillion times by now, and songs about Kekistan from fucking DrRandomercam of all people made this unbearable, especially when they're so quick to shoehorn in clips from their favorite old skeptic YouTubers while glossing over the actual details and facts of the various situations being highlighted.

It's good that you've gotten some use out of it in your work on this thread (which is EONS more informative btw), but man I could have gone the rest of my life without ever hearing Ain't No Rest For The Triggered or Fap For Kekistan again. I wanted to fucking puke. Keep it behind the paywall!

Thank you Bruce.

When I started looking into older information of the Internet and the culture war™ Airplay was one the main ones that I had initially.

Made me realize how much it did matter.

Especially to the Journos

I think part of that is their way of informing people who don't already know about social justice and the culture surrounding it.

You know what breaks me the most?, That all the things Metokur laughed at during his Tumblrisms series became actual IRL politics and even in some cases laws to be enforced, that is something that made me dislike even more the skeptic community , while the Tumblrites slowly graduated from college and started to gain positions of power in various institutions they just mocked them instead of out achieving them or gaining the same positions for gatekeeping, and now look at the nightmare we are right now
I'd not entirely blame skeptics for being unable to secure those positions themselves. Those in power were already looking to the Tumblrite generation as their next wave of loyal footsoldiers of acceptable change, especially when they saw how effective pushing political correctness was at suppressing things like Occupy Wall Street. I doubt a lot of Tumblr's influence is even genuine, there's a reason why things like shadowbanning became a term during the same time they came into cultural relevancy. The infinite stack and wheel of progressivism makes for an idelogical framework to enforce total control while promising change that can easily be superficial.

Life is Strange(GAY) was one of the first piece of media that I thought i was in some kind of parallels universe.

I have never seen such a exemple of toxic relationship be proclaimed as a great by the fans, and a lot of it i remember people saying that I don't understand because i am straight and cannot see how great the lesbian relationship of the main character is.

At least years after i see more people (and youtubers) coming and saying about how annoying and toxic that blue (i cannot see colors well) haired "best friend" was.
I played that game because I love media/stories that have time travel in them, for the sole purpose of what can be done with that respective timeline. Chloe Price was one of the worst characters I've had the 'pleasure' of watching; the fact she made fun of Kate's suicide (attempted or completed, depending on Max's actions) really irked me. She did nothing to help her mother who was struggling with her mortgage - I'd understand if she was a drug dealer to help her mom pay off bills and whatnot - and constantly clashed with David, who despite being a bit of a dork, still was trying to do the right thing.

It doesn't help Max always sounded like she was on the verge of tears, and if you chose to destroy Arcadia Bay to save Chloe, Max eventually breaks up with her in the second game anyways. Whoopsie.

Man, I was actually surprised to learn just how important Occupy Wall Street was to all this. I had heard about it in passing back in the day, but it kinda set this precedent, where whenever it looks people are uniting together against the ruling class and putting race, age, and sex aside, that's when the smear campaigns started.

Even with GamerGate you had stuff like #NotYourShield to prove that women and minorities wanted the same changes in journalism as all the (as we call them today) Chuds.

Come to think of it, remember the Area 51 raid from 2019? How many people from different backgrounds put their differences aside to meme about raiding a government base, and then months later COVID and George Floyd happened? Food for thought.

I have lost interest in the series (the time travel aspect have called my attention at first) but i hear that the devs said saving Chloe it's the 'canon' ending, it's true then?

The fact that the choice based game boils down to two choices really does sum up the game. The second game was even funnier. It tried too hard.

In the prequel she is even worse. At least in the original Life is Cringe you can give her just desserts by letting her die. In that piece of shit she does nothing but ruining lives of people around her yet the plot justifies it as her being boo how poor misunderstood father died thing. I fucking lost it when at the dinner with some rich fucks she said something about working class rights when this bitch hasn't worked a day in her life.

It would be tolerable if not for the fact that those choices are shit. You either nullify all the previous choices by reverting time and letting the bitch die or make them meaningless by letting die everyone else. And I thought Mass Effect 3 ending fork was bad.

I've heard that #OccupyWallStreet was in fact a grassroots left wing movement that managed to unite people from different walks: left wing libertarians all the way to some left wing authoritarians. Yet, I don't remember where - movements like such were co-opted from then on to become controlled and simply akin to "crisis actors". No wonder too - was ANTIFA even a thing on the US? I believe probably.

I'm not sure, but I think this may offer some ideas.

Excellent thread, OP. I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times I when I laid in bed thinking “how the fuck did we get here?” To me it seemed like tumblr and Reddit breached containment and took over the world after 2014 because the rich realized how potent identity politics were at weakening the masses to get them to…. stop noticing certain things.

Great expose on all the cultural stuff that was going on behind the scenes.

It is very bizarre how normalized some things have become. I ask myself 'Why' more often.

Minor thing I've noticed are rules. Forums, game servers, personal discords, all have substantial lists of rules to follow; often these lists are repetitious as they'll list different forms of bigotry instead of bigotry as a whole, for instance. Compound this with a litany of administration levels resembling a kind of Indian caste system...

You know, speaking of Indians, I read a comment here once mentioning that they have influenced internet culture. This perpetual cycle of people shitting on one another as a social expectation. I wrack my mind thinking we have all become so hateful because of this homogeneity and we are not even aware.
