🐱 The Unofficial Battlefield Subreddit Has Officially Had It With ‘Historical Accuracy’ Complaints

Battlefield V will have women. When this was revealed during the game’s announcement stream last month, most people said “oh neat” and got on with their lives. A vocal handful, however, found this offensively out of place in their “historically accurate” series about ramping tanks over horses. Weeks later, they still haven’t stopped complaining about it. Now, the Battlefieldsubreddit has had enough.

The moderators of the Battlefield subreddit—one of the series’ largest single discussion forums, with nearly 130,000 users—posted a particularly pointed thread today putting a stop to conversations of the game series and historical accuracy.

“We’re done, its over,” a mod wrote in an announcement thread. “New rule: No more bitching about historical accuracy, it’s a game, not a history book. Violations will have consequences.”

The moderator added that threads about historical accuracy—which usually center around the presence of women and black people and recently have featured greatest hits like a guy lying about being a historian and another person suggesting that it’d be fine for marginalized people to be in the game so long as they stayed in their place—have resulted in toxic mobs of people who aren’t even part of the community repeatedly going to war against the subreddit.

“This issue has been discussed in a million fucking threads, but we’ve never been brigaded more than we have in the past months,” the mod wrote. “Admins can only keep up with so much. We’re done wasting our time on this, every point has been made, no you’re not sexists or whatever, but this shit is just repetitive now.”

It’s important to note that the Battlefield subreddit is not controlled by, affiliated with, or paid by EA. Earlier this week, however, EA chief creative officer Patrick Soderlund also told the ceaselessly pedantic (but definitely not sexist) mobs to just deal with it.

“We don’t take any flak,” Soderlund said in an interview with Gamasutra, referring to the backlash surrounding the inclusion of women in Battlefield V. “We stand up for the cause, because I think those people who don’t understand it, well, you have two choices: either accept it or don’t buy the game. I’m fine with either or. It’s just not ok."

u wot m8?

I added "unofficial battlefield subreddit" to the title because if this isn't an official EA property then that's something that should be indicated in the title. Fuck knows why this is even an article at Kotaku the King of Clickbaiters without mentioning this important information in the fucking title.

Nice clickbait Nathan Grayson from Kotaku.

I miss the days when marketing was about "buy our product because it's good", not "buy our product or else you're a bigot".

That said, it is just a game. Player behavior in any kind of multiplayer game already kind of precludes total realism as an achievable goal. I do get the people whose complaint is that this is a shallow bid for woke points, because it is and those people are being castigated unfairly - but just do what good bigots like me do and lose interest in shit franchises that get politically charged on bad pretenses.

This is beyond stupid. Censoring us all on the sub because of some clouded sexist/racist notion that we're all uneducated bigots...

Yo sloth, what about the shitty UI in the game, red skulls, unnecessary squad message pop-ups, flashy ribbon graphics?

What about the clusterfuck of visual customization, can't even differentiate between classes, let alone our god damn teammates?

How about the pointless fortifications mechanic that is sure to be spammable for bonus points?

Then there's the concern of the game launching for full price/$60 that will only include 2 factions.... for a game set in WORLD war 2?

Or the fact that DICE/EA still haven't shown a damn bit of their own game other than a disastrous reveal trailer, and a multiplayer gameplay trailer showcasing no actual gameplay and even including single player cutscenes?

  • edit - No I'm not talking about DICE/EA using YouTubers gameplay to do their marketing for them. Believe it or not, not everyone uses random YouTubers to find out information about video games. You're a AAA studio, get off your ass and sell me this game, instead of telling us we're uneducated.

  • edit 2 - OK so we just have to take it at this point. No more historical discussions, no more questions of misrepresentation in WW2, no more talking about what WW2 was in relation to what BFV will be. It's a video game, not a book, despite everyone being on a digital media device if you're reading this. DICE has done such a fantastic job during the BFV reveal, from content released, to design transparency, to hearing criticisms and responding with the utmost professionalism on some of the more difficult issues brought forth... There's no possible explanation for the aggressive reactions seen here from the BF community after such an upstanding series of events DICE/EA have put together, other than what DICE claimed to those who disagree. We're all simply uneducated. We're Wrong, They're Right.
Mods, by censoring ANY legitimate discussions, you're just giving DICE/EA more weight to the notion that we are all some sort of vile, sexist, racist group of people here. Telling us all it's just a video game and not a history book, and if we don't agree, then our opinions on that matter aren't allowed to be shared here? Unbelievable. The irony is I grew up playing BF1942, a video game, which was solely responsible for launching my immense interest in WW2 and something I still passionately read, watch, and study in my downtime today. I don't care what media it is, be it a film, a book, or a video game, history can be found anywhere.

So with all due respect, I accept your consequences for violating this new rule.

Seems the game will only release with 2 factions:British and Germany, LMAO!

So not really a WW2 game, but Britain vs Germany (hint: Britain doesn't fare well) aaaand it's turning in to CoD.

Got it.

Give it two to three months and it'll be under $40. Anyone remember Hardline? Yeah. They expected Youtubers to be able to sell that game. It was shit and I don't think a single person plays it anymore.

They don’t. I tried playing online months ago on the PS4. Not a single person was online. I never expected that from a Battlefield game.

As for the rest of it, yeah it takes away realism, but at the end of the day it’s just some stupid video game trying to cash in. If you don’t like it, simply don’t buy it. Let your wallet decide what’s good and what isn’t. That’s the main problem with these people complaining. They complain and complain, but they cave in and buy it in the end.

>market your game as an historical representation of ww2
>add fucking robot arms and trans woman
>surprised when people that like ww2 call you out on your bs
Reminder that if those faggots didnt market their shitty pc game as a loving recreasion of ww2 most people wouldnt even give a shit
If you're gonna add things that werent there might as well make your game sci fi with ww2 setting

"Buy this game or you're a racist white cis male bigot" isn't going to sell copies.
