🐱 The Unofficial Battlefield Subreddit Has Officially Had It With ‘Historical Accuracy’ Complaints

Battlefield V will have women. When this was revealed during the game’s announcement stream last month, most people said “oh neat” and got on with their lives. A vocal handful, however, found this offensively out of place in their “historically accurate” series about ramping tanks over horses. Weeks later, they still haven’t stopped complaining about it. Now, the Battlefieldsubreddit has had enough.

The moderators of the Battlefield subreddit—one of the series’ largest single discussion forums, with nearly 130,000 users—posted a particularly pointed thread today putting a stop to conversations of the game series and historical accuracy.

“We’re done, its over,” a mod wrote in an announcement thread. “New rule: No more bitching about historical accuracy, it’s a game, not a history book. Violations will have consequences.”

The moderator added that threads about historical accuracy—which usually center around the presence of women and black people and recently have featured greatest hits like a guy lying about being a historian and another person suggesting that it’d be fine for marginalized people to be in the game so long as they stayed in their place—have resulted in toxic mobs of people who aren’t even part of the community repeatedly going to war against the subreddit.

“This issue has been discussed in a million fucking threads, but we’ve never been brigaded more than we have in the past months,” the mod wrote. “Admins can only keep up with so much. We’re done wasting our time on this, every point has been made, no you’re not sexists or whatever, but this shit is just repetitive now.”

It’s important to note that the Battlefield subreddit is not controlled by, affiliated with, or paid by EA. Earlier this week, however, EA chief creative officer Patrick Soderlund also told the ceaselessly pedantic (but definitely not sexist) mobs to just deal with it.

“We don’t take any flak,” Soderlund said in an interview with Gamasutra, referring to the backlash surrounding the inclusion of women in Battlefield V. “We stand up for the cause, because I think those people who don’t understand it, well, you have two choices: either accept it or don’t buy the game. I’m fine with either or. It’s just not ok."

So not really a WW2 game, but Britain vs Germany (hint: Britain doesn't fare well) aaaand it's turning in to CoD.

Got it.

Give it two to three months and it'll be under $40. Anyone remember Hardline? Yeah. They expected Youtubers to be able to sell that game. It was shit and I don't think a single person plays it anymore.

Hardline is on sale for 5-10 bucks or something on XBL, and I gave it about 0 seconds of thought before passing it over.

May be out of place to discuss here but over the last few years I’ve noticed a pattern.

Successful game series from the past gain a fan base (Fallout, Starwars, Wolfenstien, Battlefield). You get 2-4 ‘good’ classic games out of the series before the company gets swallowed up and money floods in from a big developer.

Money attracts people in as companies expand and you start hiring people beyond programming nerds and people who know history and tend to want to capture it. From my personal experience it’s the HR sector expanding inside a company that dooms it. HR has hiring quotas and try and tend to hire friends/family over others.

From here you see them start to latch onto meetings about creating new products. This is when you see quality of the product take a back seat to both the bottom line profit and the idea of ‘inclusive’ gameplay.

This leads to a mediocre game that still sells well banking on the previous games while the detrimental elements in the company grow stronger. This is how we get STRONK. Trans-black wymans included in the game.

At this point the ball is rolling too fast to stop and the game released is going to be a shit fest focusing on politics rather than gameplay that will eventually tank the game series. Then the series dies after terrible sales and the leeches move on to the next product.

What I’m optimistic about is both companies that say fuck off to the initial attempt at parasiting the company and the eventual rise of new IPs/companies who will make their initial couple of games to enjoy before going downhill.

Hopefully this sort of pattern will die out but if you apply it in a historical sense, it’s very similar to the rise and fall of real life empires and Kingdoms. Pattern is here to stay I fear, but at least we get 1-2 good games out of the cycle before they fall.
I still have hope man, Kojima has proven beyond any doubt how to properly run a business and create awesome memorable games, the answer is tyranny, and this is why EA is failing so fucking hard on every genre for any game, there's no one with the balls to kick out shitless talentless devs, no one to take the wheel, no one in touch with reality, only a bunch of corporate suits that know shit about games or gamers, for crying out loud they still think that paying a high score on metacritic is equivalent of success

Remember when Battlefield was originally an accurate, yet fun representation of WWII?
there's a reason why suddenly changing shit like this doesn't sit well with fans, because we remember when this game wasn't propaganda garbage that shoehorned women, niggers and cripples.

History spergs want their historical accuracy. Not "muh diversity" for a group of people who aren't even interested in WW2 games to begin with.

More towards the latter

They never once said "oh there was some miscommunication, this is just based on WW2 with creative license to sell more cosmetic options" most people would've said "oh okay, fair game"

But then they came out with:

Wow I guess you guys are the first people to have a woman protagonist in a videogame, you must be feeling like Rosa Parks right?

Chances are his daughter doesn't care about any game that isn't played on a phone while waiting in line or sitting on the school bus.

As a child I didn't care if the character looked like me. I just wanted to play the game. And while I understand why some people want representation, I think Battlefield is the wrong place for that. Everyone's trying a little too hard to be woke right now. The Reddit might be getting annoyed by too much sperging over accuracy. But shutting everyone down who isn't down with "muh diversity" just gives the community a forced narrative to abide by. For a video game.

And thus the cycle of "FACK YOU FANBOYS!!! TUMBLR PEOPLE WILL JUST FLOCK TO REPLACE YOU AND BUY OUR PRODUCTS!!! RIGHT MY NEW WOKE FRIENDS?......right?.....hello?" continues.

Ya know, it really is fucking sad how a perpetually shitting kiwifarm dink like myself can come up with atleast two ways they could have completely avoided any real fan backlash on any level

a) actually present it as an alternate history game from the getgo. In the trailer have a squadren of P.1000 Ratte Tanks being swarmed by dieselpunk cyborg SAS commandos in a London thats pretty much turned into Stalingrad, and then the reveal of crippled generic brunette british woman will not even be a damn footnote in fan reactions

b) actually give two rightful shits about representation and honouring the memory of the women who actually fucking fought on the frontlines, as well as exploring almost entirely unseen WW2 locations and theatres of battle by showing female soldiers/partisans in the Polish Home Army and the Chinese Army and having the game be atleast partially based around parts of the war that are unexplored by popular culture.

Personally I prefer option B, and tbh after they took a slight risk in going to uncharted territory with WW1, im disappointed more than anything they didnt do this again and present a WW2 game unlike anything seen before, that actually could be argued to have social importance by highlighting shit 99% of the population have zero awareness of.

That's way too well thought out. They need to shill this as so diverse your pronouns will change by themselves. Plus Poland won't let migrants rape their women and children. People would REEEEEE that a racist islamophobe country is getting top billing. They'd also complain about the lack of strong, black Polish transwomen.

I still don't know why they just didn't market this game as Battlefield Heroes 2, if they wanted to take that many creative liberties with a WW2 setting.

And there's Valkyria Chronicles 4 coming out later in the year, and that's basically Anime Eastern Front: The Game. A more attractive prospect than funding EA's money pit.

I think you guys are missing the point of the article. What I read was some reddit hotpocket decided to pen an article about how he’s losing his mind about the game sperging. Lol I’m surprised his article hasn’t prompted more “historically accurate” threads

Who's a bigger sperg - the guys sperging about games, or the guy sperging about the guys sperging about games?

Close Dice and move all production to a programming sweatshop in a hollowed out section of the Great Wall. The Wal-Mart method.
We'll never get a good Mirror's Edge sequel *sigh*

The down side of that is Kojima will never have an editor help him fix the fucking terrible writing surrounding all of his great ideas.

I'm sure every person that goes the Kojima road weights this, either on their mind or in practice and the result is always the same, the cons overwhelm the pros for a game on a relative increase depending on the numbers of employees with a voice, people like Kojima end up saying "Fuck you all, we're doing it my way or I find someone else to replace your position" even if this means fucking up with plot holes or dropping mindblowing shit excuses like the hilarious skin breathing for his kinky pleasure.

All the “dad chat” was a major PR stunt by EA to control the narrative. They know everyone hates them following the Star Wars Battlefeont debacle and they couldn’t afford their largest franchise to suffer the same fate.

I don’t care either way, women or no women in the game. I stopped buying battlefield games years ago.

Last one I bought was BF1 and it wasn't too bad. I would play it occasionally, but it just isn't that great. Loved BF3, liked B4, and after that it's been downhill.

Was interested in Battlefront but EA just shits the bed and I've refused to buy anything else from this at this point.

I'd play the shit out of a game about the Night Witches, which seems like such an obvious title I'm shocked no one has made one yet. Some stealth piloting mechanics, some radar evasion, fuel consumption vs gliding, bomb aiming for maximum target destruction... Seems like a good studio could make an enjoyable game out of it, but then I'm a sucker for good plane games.

Oh yeah I’m done with EA too. I only buy a few games from select devs anymore, CD Projekt Red being one of them. I just don’t have time to play many games with the kiddos being so active.

Why give money to the worst dev on the planet that has killed so many good studios?

That's because EA basically loses money on all bar 3/4 of their games every year. This is why they've shut down so many of their secondary studios and horde all the IPs. Their sports arm (where they basically re-release the same game every year) makes them a lot of money off of the licenses they hold and the changes of player lineups every year guarantees these games will continue ad infinitum.

EA has since tried to apply this to every single game they have ever owned. This is what we're seeing with DICE right now and the rapid re-releasing of shooters from them every year. They've had to take up the "slack" left behind when Medal Of Honor flatlined despite the first game being based on balls-to-the-walls true events.

Bioware's about to go the same way, but we might get a half decent game out of it with a "One Last Hurrah" with Anthem before they finally put the bullet in the brainpan for them.

This is because EA is run utterly and entirely for the shareholders, suits and hedge funds and nobody else, there's no Hideo Kojima, there's no Ken Levine and lord knows there's nothing even remotely like the Guillemot family who know to pump the fucking brakes every so often to give their studios time to refresh.

It warps the need to release games from chasing after multiple releases which make a moderate profit and keep your lights on and instead focus almost entirely on hunting the next "Billion dollar" trick.

So the answer is, kill sports fans.
