Some news of sorts. All has been quiet on the VR front, so I checked some YouTubers. It turns out that Meta/Facebook has been cutting back its VR plans. At the same time (or perhaps because of Facebook's about-face) various big players are pulling out of VR or heavily scaling back. What's more, the Quest 3 is likely going to be the Quest 2 with a smaller form factor and better optics, but the same or similar specs.
Meta killed the Metaverse so I wouldnt have much hope for anything associated with VR in general from Meta;

Psvr2 is out and there with no hype what so ever I thought this would be like when the original rift released but not even a ripple just articles saying it's good but pricy. Also PS5 doesn't have a internet browser the headset you can't watch porn 🤔

I saw some hype, but then I watch a bunch of VR YouTubers and check in on VR occasionally. Seeing the hype deflate in real time has been something though.

As for normies, I don't think they care about VR at all. When I mention VR outside of VR circles I get the same reactions as in 2016. Even going so far as to say "there's no games for it", but then making excuses why every game doesn't count. I have relatives that still break out the Quest 2 every few months to play some major release or to see how long they can last on the rollercoaster sims before they're sick.

I hope this means faceberg is actually about to be done fucking around with the VR industry if it makes the quest fanboys shut up. Minus the positives of Facebook not attempting to corall this entire niche.
I agree, but at the same time they seem to have been proping the whole thing up. Now it falls to Sony and Valve to make VR work.

Sony has the name "Soyny" for a reason, and Valve has the Valve Time meme for a reason. Most AAA have abandoned VR after their shit tier attempts failed to sell.

We never did get GTA SA my head canon is he didn't know what it was then saw they made fun of him and cancelled it.

Let's be honest, Facebook may have been "propping" it up but their ways of doing so were leading it to ruination anyway. The insistence on the meta verse being "their thing" fucked them up and the image people have of VR even more. Trying to grab the hardware side by selling systems at a loss for so long, tanking it with their data money was just sickening to watch as well.

They could have just made the quest 2 back to its og price.

I do hate Facebook but I do love the iridescent/pearlescent aesthetic they have

What headset would you guys recommend in 2023 for PC VR?

There's the Reverb G2, which is the best headset for the price, but comes with bad controllers.

The Quest 2 and Pico 4 are popular but using them for PC results in compression. There's also the privacy concerns.

The Valve Index is dated, expencive, and I assume still has quality control issues.

Porn. Porn will move VR forward more than anything else.
so PSVR2 is out since it doesn't even have a browser to stream porn (and the media player was ass on the ps4, doubt it has improved)

reverb should be fine, unless they somehow made it worse but I haven't heard anything to that effect. however I doubt there will be a revision or more WMR stuff in general...

not sure about the quest/pico compression if used wired, but as you said there's still the privacy issue. otoh most people these days already post their shit all over the internet, the zucc and china would hardly learn anything new they don't already have stored in their database (and most people don't care about it anyway).

index is still fine too, but you'll paying premium for shit you don't really need and don't want - lightroom is the superior tech, but not necessarily what casuals want with hanging boxes in their living room.

valve really should do at least a knuckles revision to make them cheaper and more sturdy, preferably serviceable yourself like the deck. besides the lighthouse boxes (which cost 200 fucking bucks for some reason) there's isn't anything more they could do to reduce the price. ~700 bucks still looks better than $1000+

I'd go with Reverb g2 quest 2 isn't made for pc and the index is outdated and a pain to set up.
having used WMR, index might require more effort to set up, but afterwards will be a smoother ride.

I'd still go with a reverb g2 just for the price in theory, but I checked out of curiosity and it would be 700-800 eurobux. at that point might as well spend 200 more and go with an index.

Why? What are the reverbs actual advantages over the index? I don't think the Index is particularly a pain to set up either unless steamvr has gotten significantly worse over time. I was able to get tracking working on my piece of shit diy attempt just with some open source drivers. Now that was a pain in the ass but it wasn't a way any sane person would do it. From what I understand there really isn't a clear advantage over the Index. Some have better res but have the issue that come with OLED, some have a balance of quality but still lack the knuckles controller design.

I'm still using my old Vive with the wireless adapter and the GearVR lens mod because I don't really see any value in upgrading until a headset comes out that can take advantage of wireless and doesn't use those godawful fresnel lenses.

I've been mildly impressed with the PSVR2 so far. I've only played the horizons bundle game, it's just ok for gameplay but looks great. I'm hoping Gran Turismo 7 is better.

I don't think PSVR2 will really take off unless they get a must have title out for it. I would love a more interactive game engine built for it, something like Breath of the Wild physics but made for VR and polished.

Sort of news.

Valve has submitted new hard for certification in South Korea.

No one knows what it is, but the most likely option is the Deckard, if it exists.

in4 steam controller 2.

if it really is deckard, it still gonna take a while given valve time - if it even comes out at all with the state of VR and the economy at large.

Is there no connection for it? Like completely wireless and better tracking?

I know ive been lax on here but I have a doom 3 review I saved and forgot to upload from way back. Lately ive also been playing walking dead saints and sinners. It plays amazing but I have to have music on while I do it in order to make it fun. The atmosphere and mechanics are extremely stressful lol.

The future of VR rests on Quest 3 and Deckard. PSVR2 seems to have been abandoned. Valve is quite invested so I think we'll see something eventually, but unless it's a Quest 2 level hit I doubt we'll see a Deckard 2.

If these are the last headsets, my big concern is keeping the hardware alive since even robust VR headsets seem to fail after a few years of use with no real market for replacements, and there's no real way to emulate VR games due to them being so hardware dependent. I've been waiting for a no-compromises VR headset (or at least, a no-major-drawbacks one) since the original Rift and it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

That or some sort of incremental Steam Deck update (like a Steam Deck OLED) wouldn't really surprise me.

TBH meta abandoning VR might be worse than it staying given that everybody else has already left or its about to.

Same, the crafting its particularly annoying.

Well the Q3 is indeed a Q2 with a bigger GPU and allegedly better optics, but my guess is those ring-less controllers are gonna suck, rumors says meta did it like that to cut on costs while at the same time going to offer pro controllers that have cameras to improve the tracking but will not be cheap.

Speaking of that there are rumors that meta plans to make an even more expensive headset to go against the apple visor. These idiots think people are hyped about that because of the price? is like samsung thinking people want galaxy phones that are more expensive than iphones. These idiots truly don't understand how branding works, and besides it seems apple has already cancelled the 'budget' version of the version and its scalling back production because, surprise, very few people want to pay $3500 for a VR visor in the era of $400 for a quest.

And speaking of the quest, seems GTASA VR its truly dead and buried. All the people I know who got a Q2 did so only because of the $299 price and that announcement, practically none are using it anymore and they aren't hyped about the Q3 either.

Guess VR is gonna die again, like in the 90's.
