The Windows 11 Secret Tree Fort

Now's the time to get practice in, so when "necessity" arrives you won't be jumping right into the deep end. Next time you're setting up a computer, dual-boot Linux on it.

Realistically, you need to figure out what you can do in Linux, what you can do in Wine, and what still needs a carefully sandboxed installation of real Windows for.
*gasp*
So you are telling me that my 10+ years of experience with Ubuntu, Debian, Kali, Mint, FreeBSD, Mandriva is futile because I need to *practice*?!

But really...
I would rather stay with Windows due to pure convenience of use. For example I need to think what to do with Secure Boot. Stick with it and install Ubuntu that has the key or disable it to make Manjaro work on my PC. I have Elgato streaming card which don't have drivers on Linux. Same goes with QNAP NAS that I have for backups and *nearly legal movies*. I know the limitations of Linux more than most of users here and how much hassle and effort requires pimping machine to make it work.

I was dual booting Windows alongside with Ubuntu and believe me repairing GPT partitions after uninstalling GRUB isn't an easy task. Sometime EFI partition gets corrupted and commands in terminal does jack shit because partition isn't recognised or privileges are revoked. To this day I have on my old HDD leftovers in EFI and *theoretically* I can still select Ubuntu from Boot Menu during machine start. I hate systemd that is more and more imbedded with most popular Linux distro. Even in Windows you don't have one service manager that not only controls window manager but also printer.

I never used Wine and never will be. I prefer to pay 50 bucks for Crossover which automatically downloads required dll's and scripts to run software rather than reading boards and trying out solutions posted there. The downside is my old Crossover version doesn't work with implemented Python in newer distro's and is looking for symlinks in directory that doesn't exist anymore.

So as you may see I know Linux pretty much and I rather spend my time fooling around than *practicing* my Linux skills.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to insult you, I just wasn't familiar with your level of expertise.

My computer doesn't have TPM enabled so no Win11 for me.
I'm waiting to see how long it is before they forget about that "requirement" and start surprise-upgrading people anyway.
(Or worse, upgrading people into a system that will refuse to boot)

Good.

Some mainboards support third-party TPM chips that you can simply plug into your computeh. Like those here:

For example my PC isn't good enough simply because my processor is just one number behind but still has the same controllers and functions despite being "older". Some guy installed Windows 11 on Pentium 4 due to stupid mistake that some pajeet made and wrongly recognises it as supported despite the fact it doesn't provide functions that Windows 11 requires.

EDIT:
That just proves Windows 11 is open beta and shouldn't be even considered as upgrade because as old saying says every 2nd Windows edition is crap.

Windows 11 apparently breaks some games that use anti-cheat software due to the fact that Windows 11 doesn't like processes that scan your memory. Been seeing a lot of complaints about it.

Anyone with Windows 11 want to try seeing if they can run Master of Orion 2 in DOSBox? That game makes stuff on the heap executable.

I thought Windows 10 would be the start of an Apple OS model. I now see it isn't and have every intention of going to Linux. I want to own an OS again rather than rent an OS for a few years.

Windows 10 already almost felt that way to me. They made it annoying as possible to NOT have a MS account just to get into your own computer, ie you had to unplug the Ethernet cord to allow installation to go through. Glad I had already switched to Linux 100% in 2018, a decision I feel better and better about every few months.

I'm glad to hear this wasn't just something I fucked up. What a pain.

Whilst I'm not planning on switching from Windows 10 LTSC any time soon, I'm curious as to whether Windows 11 is just as militant about forcing updates as normie Windows 10 is. I could forgive most of MS' militancy about updates and consider installing Windows 11 if only they'd allow users to set a specific time each week to check for and install updates, like in the good old days of Windows 7.

It also has some issues with Tales of Arise and Scarlet Nexus.

That was me until I made the mistake of buying a PC with only USB3.0 ports and couldn't be arsed to buy a USB2.0 card just to get a mouse working so I could backdate the OS to 7 sp 2.

Oh yeah, that's way more convenient. You sound as slow as the OP. Might as well just be opening it using task manager.
AsRock has a tool that injects the Intel 100 series USB 3 drivers into the Windows 7 installer. I have been meaning to try it.

If you really have to use Windows "SC DELETE wuauserv" removes its capacity to update. Then you just have to deal with cloud integration, bloatware and telemetry.

Speaking of telemetry, can you please truncate to https://www.ebay.com/itm/154651568438 nextime? Thanks.

It's still annoying but I've configured it to be less so. For about two weeks Win10 have sometimes popped up the "hey mang, wanna restart for these updates? No? wanna schedule a time? No?". It pops up once every other day, enough to annoy me a little but not more than that. I can't remember the last time it forced a reboot on its own while either unattended or while using the computer.

If MS used the forced install/reboot for seriously critical stuff, like a new Blaster, that would be one thing. Forced updates/reboots that either installs or uninstalls Paint3D, depending on the season, is some fucking bullshit that we can live without. Overall I'm happy with Windows 10 but some people deserve a severe beating with the promise of more beatings for more people if they keep doing stupid shit.

Was installing windows 10 home on a laptop recently & made the error of giving it WiFi access, so it screamed at me to make an MS accout which I couldn't do because, work. I had to log onto the Router & filter its traffic via its mac address so it thought I was offline because I couldn't remove the fucking WiFi creds.

Fuck Windows, all my Homies hate Windows.

Well you typed N and got Notepad, but obviously that wasn't what you wanted because you kept typing. So you typed O. Since you didn't want Notepad, my next guess is Notepad++.
Well, you typed NO and got Notepad++, but you kept typing "T" so I must not have guessed what you want yet. Let's see, what else do I have that start with NOT?
That's actually not a bad theory and on paper sounds like a good idea. The problem is that unless you at least type out "notepad+", you have a 50% chance of getting what you want if you do what I do and just type a few letters and hit enter. Unless you're pecking one letter every few seconds, that kind of thing doesn't actually help you because you type faster than you can process what's being shown. It doesn't seem to be consistent either.

Admittedly it's a minor gripe that doesn't actually affect me that often. I'm not opening either program from the search bar very frequently, it's just a weird behavior I thought was unnecessary and am glad is gone.
