The Windows 11 Secret Tree Fort

No one answered me in the no stupid questions thread, so I'll ask here:

> Ordered a custom hp laptop, spec'd windows 10 pro. Currently use software that needs windows, no Linux (yet).
> Wait months cuz of silicon shortage
> Windows 11 releases
> email from hp saying they are "upgrading everyone for free, but have 10 days to revert after boot-up"
> Receive laptop on Friday.
> No "Go back" option to get 10. contact hp: "sorry, but its okay cuz 11 is the bestest!"
I also don't want to deal with the LTSC bs, too much hassle for a cavenigger like me.

Do I:
A) return this shit and just continue to use my dying laptop,
B) return try and get a mac, most of the software I use has mac versions but I would probably need to get/pay for new shit potentially
C) Live with windows 11. It is very hard to decide because of how polarizing the topic is, and all talk seems to be about the UI. Will it be less secure/ worse telemetry shit then 10?

Yeah I was gonna run su10 if I had too, but it is hard to get a grasp on the changes, everyone is either doomer or "yes, coonsume plz"

from what I understand, Windows 11 is mostly backend changes that doesn't really make a difference for customers. I think the only reason Win 11 even exists is to make the "upgrade path" to TPM 2.0 less confusing for both the engineers and the customers. Imagine if windows 10 said "sorry we can't give you security updates anymore because <gobeldygook nobody understands>".

Windows 11 is "fine". It's not worse than 10. It's still immature in a lot of weird ways. Run and check in on SU10 updates on a regular basis I guess.

I think it's gonna end up being regarded as the new "best windows" in a year or two, but I'm still on 10.

D) just restall 10 you spaz. You should be reinstalling windows anyway, OEM windows images are bullshit and are full of bullshit.

Downloaded after trying to put it off/days of screen glitching out.
Whatever I saved was in my Recycling Bin and I restored it yesterday. It's like Window 10 but with visual changes and a central bar from older OS. At least it wasn't like my experience with Windows 8.

That rumor that Windows 11 requires a working webcam to run turned out to just be a rumor, right?

Another thing I heard is that you can't set up local accounts anymore.

Even if I wanted to install it the intended way, I wouldn't be able to.
1. Secure Boot is basically unusable on my PC since I wiped Microsoft keys at some point and haven't bothered adding my own.
2. My shitty old AM3+ motherboard does not have headers for TPM module, and obviously no TPM support exists in the BIOS or CPU microcode.
3. Speaking of CPUs, whitelist of eligible ones is pretty damn narrow and my series aren't anywhere near it.
Despite that, I've installed and tested it out in VM, managing to suffice every requirement except CPU one. And what I can say is that it's shit. Taskbar eats like 10% of already deficient vertical space and can't be moved to the left or right (technically you can use registry hack, but that leaves it completely unusable). Thankfully, you can revert it to standart Windows 10 taskbar with yet another registry fix, which only leaves default start menu not working, but who doesn't use Classic/Open-shell instead? Sadly, the aforementoned fix also disables the new fancy Explorer style, which is perhaps the only thing I liked about 11. And as a cherry on top. you also have folders completely lacking their icon previews, a feature as old as Windows XP if not 98. If you could guess what resides in a folder just by glancing at icon and seeing other icons stacked in it before, now you have no quick way to differentiate one folder except opening it or reading name and trying to remember what was there.

Either return it, or: D) Install a Linux Distro.

Windows 11 is just Windows 10 with a worse UI and additional grooming for the eventual DaaS rollout of Windows. Linux Mint is a better Windows than modern Windows, and is more compatible with older Windows and Macintosh software. You might as well just do yourself the favor and learn how it works, because Windows 11 is the last dying gasp of the operating system you knew. Microsoft wants you to own nothing, goy. Soon, only the kernel will be installed on your computer, and you'll basically be using a cloud terminal, where all of the Windows parts of Windows will be streamed to you remotely, for a monthly fee, while all extant copies of the OS will be fed nerf updates until you have to jump ship, just like with XP, 7, and 8.

Mac OS isn't any better, because Apple doesn't even want you to access your own filesystem. They're arguably worse about this than Microsoft is right now, and while Apple being their own chipfab is something I recognize as good, it means they can continue to isolate themselves from the rest of tech, inside their own extremely overpriced, brushed aluminum, walled-garden. They praise compatibility, but only insofar as they can scrape some dregs from the PC crowd with x86 programs. Once you're in their system, you're in forever, and you'll always look like that olive scarf and black peacoat-wearing faggot at Starbucks for doing it, because that's what you'll become. Enjoy buying a new piece of (HORRIBLY MADE) $3000 hardware every year. Don't forget your $1000 accessories.

Fuck me, I just noticed the Win11 notification showed up on my computer and I came here precisely to ask If I should be worried about this shit installing by itself since a few months ago I woke up to find out Windows installed an update even though I had them paused. Is there any way to prevent this?
 
So my laptop just asked me if I wanted to do Windows 11 and I said no. Searched for this thread before anything else on the Internet for advice :story: I’ll take the autistic ratings
Besides the improved search function and the different look- are there any concerns that haven’t been voiced yet (that are my 5th grade level understanding of computers)?

Installed it. First impressions:

Unlike Windows 10, it installed quickly.
Widgets are retarded but are disabled quickly.
It didn't fuck with any of my settings other than my desktop wallpaper, which was easily re-added.
It did seem a little nonplussed by not being able to access the microphone and webcam (the simple beauty of user installed flip switches is not to be overstated) but accepted it with good grace.
The much hyped rounded corners - well, I've not cut myself on an open window yet and am unlikely to start now, so indifferent.
The only really irritating thing is no more getting to task manager with a right click to the taskbar. I've had to pin it, like some fucking barbarian.
