Reinstalled Windows 10, had to do a full clean reinstall since keeping personal files wouldn't fix the issue so I had to let em' go. I saved a few things I wanted to keep, but otherwise new system works great. For all of the laziness behind the coding and how obtuse it is to use sometimes, when Linux works, it just works. With Windows I can't be sure if Gargameet Guldeep from Uttar Pradesh tested his code before going out with the boys to gangrape a few women or monitor lizards.

Edit: Noticed it kept my non-Steam Games folder, God is good!

I notice VLC takes a few moments to open up when opening it through an audio/video file in File Explorer and yet opens nearly instantaneously when opening the program directly. I don't know if this is Windows' fault... but I do think it is Windows' fault somehow. I just know it.

Wonder if it's Explorer related. Try opening VLC with a file path from the command line and see if the same delay happens.

EDIT: Fun trivia about how nu-Microsoft really does not give as much of a shit about AI as they act they do. I own a fairly modern ThinkPad with that Copilot button being set as priority over the Apps/context menu button. Obviously, found it annoying. Looked up info about it online. Turns out it's trivially easy to remap this useless piece of shit with PowerToys, as what the magical Copilot button actually does is that it sends a keyboard combo of left Shift, left Win/Meta, and F23.

Yes, they used one of those buried F13-F24 keys in a stupid combination to do the Copilot button, it's not some special new proprietary key. It's a proper bodge. They absolutely do not care about implementing this shit, just make it "good enough" and off it goes. :story:

Built in, this problem only happens in VLC. Like I mentioned, Windows Media Player plays them just fine, perhaps it's an encoding issue since it seems to be HEVC and H.265 encoded files that are affected.

Edit: Fixed, had to set the output module to DirectX. Quite odd, since I've never had this issue before.

I'm guessing the mkv file has 5.1ch audio and VLC is not converting it to 2ch audio for your stereo speakers? Generally in a 5.1 audio setup the center speaker would handle dialogue, the subwoofer deep sounds, and the rear speakers ambiance. So if you lose those channels without properly mixing them into the remaining left and right speaker channels things sound all wonky.

Anyhow. I decided to go from mint only to dual booting with win 11, and god damn office products suck now. They take forever to load AND they force ai.
 
I think we’re going to start seeing companies adopt Macs as the standard support PC. Engineering will still be PCs, but Windows 11 has some serious issues and I just don’t see corporations putting up with it, especially with US.gov pushing to dry up corporate welfare.

Windows 11 doesn't have enough issues and bugginess to justify that for an enterprise environment. For a business, the telemetry is mostly irrelevant, and IT teams are going to have images set up that remove or disable crap that isn't needed like Copilot or Xbox. Honestly, most of the issues with Windows 11 are things that are annoying for power users using Windows at home, but are easy to remedy, even if it can be a bit annoying.

Still hasn't been any massive enough to justify having users learn a new operating system and spending thousands on buying new hardware. I'm not denying that Windows 11 is a thoroughly enshittified operating system, but it would cost ridiculous amounts of money, and even if a large number of people are already familiar with MacOS, many of them are not, and it is a fucking nightmare trying to get end users to learn something new, especially Boomers and Zoomers.

Mac OS is a braindead simple UI and nobody needs to care about it anyway as everything is going to be accessed either through Office or a web app.

I think you severely overestimate the ability of boomers and zoomers to change engrained habits and move to macOS from Windows. Hell, most boomers struggle to transition from each iteration of Windows to the next.

That’s because the changes Microsoft does don’t make any sense. Meanwhile each update to OS X is gradual and logical, changes and new features are highlighted in a way that’s easily digested. It’s been that way since the 80s.

that... that doesn't help. they still need to learn macOS and the learning curve is greater then learning Windows 11
