Some troonix distros use Zram for this exact reason of precaching for performance, Garuda specifically, but it never ever got to 20 gigs on 10 LTSC or Garuda for me
I can't believe zram would be faster than normal RAM. It's a RAM disk with compression, after all, so it will be five to ten times slower. But I also use it extensively since it's a great way to create ✨ free RAM ✨ (it's free! 🤩)

Always think of the poor hungry children in Africa who cannot afford enough RAM.
I'm sorry but that's the truth. If there's unutilized RAM, the OS should utilize it for caching to speed things up, and if some program needs more RAM, the OS should flush those caches to leave space for the programs. That's how memory management should work, but there's only one group of users that act like they're IT experts, while at the same time being some of the most tech illiterate insufferable faggots that walk this planet. If you really want to have low RAM usage on your 64GB system there's memreduct that brought down my RAM usage by 10%. But guess what, it keeps going up because the OS keeps utilizing the system RAM to cache things, which is what it should do.
I'm interested, fire away. I have noticed the Steam client hogging close to one Gigabyte of RAM at times even when idle after their UI update, but six years ago it would top out at about 300 Megabytes.
It's the antithesis to the "good guy Valve" bullshit your usual cock gobblers peddle. For one, it's webshit. You know, the thing for which Microsoft would be burned on a stake for? No one questions why Steam is built on Chromium, which is why it dropped support for Windows 7. It wastes resources if you keep it running in the background for your games, and it's another example that Valve is not this amazing savior that everyone praises them for, they're too fucking lazy and incompetent to maintain their own native framework for the launcher to the point where they threw out their old UI to replace it with webshit since it's cheaper to contract some Pajeets to do this work.

But when I really began to fucking despise Steam is when I wanted to set up Proton on Linux. No one ever told me there are better ways to do it without touching Steam, so I installed Steam. Uh oh, you gotta log in! And guess what you cannot avoid when you do that: you going online on Steam Community with no way to stop it. You're like me and you keep your status as "Invisible" because you want to play your vidya in peace? Well Lord GabeN believes that you are a fucking faggot if you don't want to be constantly hooked up to Valve's social media bullshit, so every fresh login will force you to go fully online, and everyone will know that you went online. What a crock of shit this experience is, and people will try to tell me they're the fucking Jesus Christ of computing and gaming? Kill yourself, they're as anti-human as the rest of them. Imagine trusting that a company from fucking Seattle won't be evil.

Another thing that I hate about how Valve conducts their business: Steam Input. If you want to use those mappings for games that don't come from Steam, you gotta run Steam. This extends to the issue with the Steam Controller where it only supports SDL3, no XInput, and you're expected to use Steam for Steam Input with it. Valve isn't giving you a choice here, but unfortunately Valve cultists are just as bad as any other cultists, you're not allowed to shittalk their god GabeN or else you'll be crucified for your sins. Even though they rightfully deserve the scrutiny for how they designed their bullshit. Kailaden had his own gripes with Valve, with one of them being that Steam Input will aggressively take over any other input API to the point where he had to create a dedicated module for cockblocking Steam, so I'm starting to understand why he sperged out so hard and deleted is Steam account.

So yeah, fuck Valve, fuck Linux, and fuck AMD. Those three have the most rabid fanboys that put Snoy cockgobblers to fucking shame.

it's another example that Valve is not this amazing savior that everyone praises them for
if valve isn't an amazing savior, explain why their store has sales
checkmate atheists
every fresh login will force you to go fully online
Windows forces me to log in: invasion of privacy
Steam forces me to log in: praise be St Gaben the Fat, savior of gaming
Valve isn't giving you a choice here
you don't need choices when you can choose the one true savior of gaming

@Slav Power the thing is i agree totally but i came to peace that valve sucks since they abandoned half life and left 4 dead for faggot shit like deadlock, but why get so mad at it?

ez fix, use GoG and Heroic games launcher and pirate steam games

Heroic games launcher is on Windows too and I use it to manage pirated games

alternatives exist to Steam and GoG doesnt force me to use steam social media or even their client and the GoG versions of games on Steam usually have specific patches and run better out of the box and GoG often has more sales than Steam since they are privately owned now

The fact Windows Server still exists is a testament to what a godawful shambling pile of crap Linux is. Free UNIX? Sign me the FUCK up. Because basically the only reason Windows Server took over is SPARC, Power, and PA-RISC servers cost a fortune, and then Itanium ended up being an absolute dog. Linux copies the file system and some basic concepts from UNIX, but it's a fucking piece of junk.
This is all just copium/contrarianism.

Windows Server is absolute garbage. There is very little point in running it unless you are running the Microsoft Stack.

I worked in shops that were 100% .NET/MS/SQL Server, and they transitioned away from that because Windows Server, .NET and SQL Server don't cut it when you work at scale. One team replaced 20-50 Windows servers with 2 Linux servers by migrating off the Microsoft stack.

Linux is a clone of Unix. It doesn't just take basic concepts; it is a straight-up clone.
Windows Server needs a lot of babysitting and frequent rebooting, because it's crap derived from consumer desktop OS, while Linux has an insane level of fragility that I can't believe we just tolerate, due to it being a hobby project run by autistic speds and trannies.
This is patently untrue.

I've seen RHEL boxes and Debian installations literally run for a decade or more and survive porting the installation across drives and hardware changes.
Windows is around half of the global server market share, and yes, there are some VERY large deployments out there.
No, it isn't. It's like 30% at most. Most of these installations are running the legacy .NET stack or other legacy Microsoft stacks.

I have no idea why people make shit up when you can look at the market share stats.
Windows forces me to log in: invasion of privacy
Steam forces me to log in: praise be St Gaben the Fat, savior of gaming
Apparently you don't understand the difference between signing into the OS and an application that runs on the OS.

This is untrue. I've been invisible on Steam for literally months.

I have no idea why you lie about this when I can instantly check it on my machine.
So yeah, fuck Valve, fuck Linux, and fuck AMD. Those three have the most rabid fanboys that put Snoy cockgobblers to fucking shame.
LMFAO. You are malding about having your shit pushed in on the Linux thread.

If you know how Steam works (apparently you don't) you get logged in once per install.

If you know how Steam works (apparently you don't) you get logged in once per install.
If you read what I was saying (you didn't) that was what I was complaining about. Forcing you to go online on the optional Friends module on a fresh install is bullshit design. Basically forcing you to interact with social media bullshit if all you want to do is to install software.
Windows forces me to log in
At least Microsoft gives me an option to set up a local account on a fresh install. And it doesn't force you automatically go online on Xbox Live if you logged into the MS Store to download software. Valve could learn from Microsoft here on how not to treat your customers as slaves to the social media algorithmic bullshit.
If I knew about it beforehand, I would've avoided that whole headache. At least now I know that gaming distros are a meme and it takes zero effort to set up Mint to be able to play Windows games. I'm still not too keen on the whole game launcher concept and I'd prefer a more technical way of launching shit, and apparently there's a thing called umu launcher that lets you run Windows games via Proton from the command line, bypassing all the fluff so you can make a simple shortcut to run an executable like you would on Windows.

Still, it's baffling how Linuxfags circlejerk about Valve finally giving you zero reason to use Windows because games now work (lol, lmfao), and if you don't know about all the esoteric third party bullshit that you should use and use Steam, you'll suffer through bullshit you never had to experience under Windows. But of course it's your fault for being too stupid to use Linux, and so the circle closes once again. The wunderwaffe to defeat Windows gets created, turns out it's a load of shit and all the decades old problems still prevail, but it's your fault so fuck off.

You are moving the goalposts. The complaint you had is easily fixed, as demonstrated to you.

No, it doesn't. You have to trick it into letting you set up a local account. Also, many of the pre-installed programs in the OS will not work whatsoever without signing into a Microsoft account, which will sign you out of the Microsoft account at the OS level. This has been the case for at least 2 years; it may be longer.

You keep on either lying about stuff or moving the goalposts constantly, or you are just straight out incorrect.

It really should come to no surprise that Linux users like Valve. I like companies that create software (Proton) that finally removes the need to keep a Windows installation around. The only thing I used Windows for the last 10 years was gaming.

Playing games on Linux with Steam requires very little setup (install Steam and log in). The vast majority of games work flawlessly now, even ones that aren't officially supported. Live service games are the only games I've ever had any real issues with running on Linux. Many other games work flawlessly.

Installing stuff with Wine is a little bit more involved but really isn't that difficult. Other game stores require community workarounds, as they don't support Linux. However, they do work reasonably well.

I like Windows because it is like garlic to Troons and Homosexuals. If you're having issues, add more computer. Troonix should be reserved for those little micro boxes that take half a minute to boot up because they're running on some pentium, a single stick of laptop ram, passive cooling, and a prayer, while the shitty old lenovo my dad had from the 2000's with 3 gigs of DDR2 and a spinning drive would boot faster AND make a cool noise, while running Vista of all OS programs. Kids don't know how good they fucking have it today. Modern computers are literally yesteryear supercomputers. You have seen nothing until you see a PC just utterly crash from getting too far in the space stage in Spore, and won't even boot up the new game you waited months for (Fuck you Lego Universe!).

@Slav Power the thing is i agree totally but i came to peace that valve sucks since they abandoned half life and left 4 dead for faggot shit like deadlock, but why get so mad at it?

Because Steam cultists are annoying assholes who shit up every single discussion about PC gaming with their brainless hero worship. It's double dog triple annoying because they lose their shit over Snoy doing something with Gaystation or MS doing something with Windows that they feel violates privacy (meanwhile they are telling their life's story to ChatGPT), or Actiborg does something with Call of Duty that they feel is consumer hostile, or whatever it is, and then when Valve does the exact same thing with Steam or one of their shitass live service games, it's suddenly okay for no other reason than "blessed be Gaben the Fat, Savior of Gaming."

Steam isn't even good. It's kind of shit. 95% of the UI real estate is ads. A lot of the text in the UI is unreadable due to being blue on slightly darker blue in a 7 point font or something. Every single panel is cluttered with a ton of crap I have no interest in looking at, ever, with the thing I actually want to see shoved into some corner to make room for more ad banners. All the stuff done to try and console-ize PC gaming with vendor lock-in has (a) failed and (b) is badly executed. I gamed on PC sporadically between 2003 and 2017 or so. What I noticed is that every single thing Steam does in terms of friends lists, library management, controller integration, etc, my Playstation did 1000x better. My PS4 provided a generally smoother, less cluttered, more integrated, more pleasant experience than Steam. And what, I'm supposed to bow at St Gaben's altar because Steam had a sale on Bugfucker 4 that $3 less than the PSN sale price?

And here's the other thing. I do not want my PC to be turned into a crumbly version of a Playstation with a halfassed interface and tiny text. I don't want it to be turned into a good version of the Playstation. I don't want it to be a Playstation at all, meaning I don't want forums, voice, text chat, friend groups, the controller, or anything else to be owned by a single company with vendor lock-in. That's why it's a PC, not a console. I don't need their launcher, it's called "Putting your game shortcuts in a folder called "Games."

Here's a better game launcher than Steam.

✅ No performance overhead
✅No ads
✅No clutter
✅Can see all the games
✅Organize games as I like

Freedom is the point of PC gaming. It's my machine, I use the apps I want. No, I don't care that a game uses antimalware to stop cheaters. I care that a single company is trying to converge the entire end-to-end platform into a very fat Jew's lap.

My current desktop has dual 18-core Xeons with 64GB of RAM, how much computer do I need to add for Windows to not kill itself via Windows Update every other week?
I mean my current set up is an i9 12900k, 64gb of DDR4, and a 4070 super. I'm not having pants shitting crashes. I've built 3 computers with Windows 11. They all seem to work fine. Might be that you have two cores.

The complaint you had is easily fixed
I am not moving the goalpost because my complaint is unfixable. I cannot install Steam on a fresh machine and log in without automatically logging into Steam Friends as Online. These options are unavailable until you first log in, but when you do, boom, everyone sees you're online. But if you want to insist that "I'm confused" then be my guest.
You have to trick it
You don't know what you're talking about.
-You cannot make a local account on Home edition
-Every other edition has a local account option under log-in options
Which is significantly different from:
-You can't make a local account and you have to "trick" Windows to make one

What you want me to do is to accept the premise of assholes. You want me to be as objectively true and accurate when I talk about FOSS, while you won't have the courtesy to do the same when it comes to proprietary software. To which I say: go fuck yourself and gargle my balls. If you don't want me to talk about things Linux related I don't fully understand, then don't do the same when it comes to Windows. Otherwise I don't see any reason why I should respect you.
install Steam and log in
Goes against any and all Linux logic, yet you're defending it just because it's Valve.

Instead of:
-opening the terminal
-typing "apt get install valve-proton"
-running "proton game.exe" and playing

You have to:
-install a proprietary launcher
-create an account on a proprietary platform
-log into the proprietary launcher with that account
-download Proton
-use the proprietary launcher to run a game

Which in a sane world would have Linux users rightfully telling Valve to shove their launcher up their ass and make it so that Proton can be distributed like any other package on any other distro. But since it's Valve, you have a double standard, and it's okay for a corporation to force you to use proprietary software with an account requirement to be able to play games. Something that I don't have to do on Windows, as I don't need an MS account to install Windows, or to use winget to install whatever extra that I'd need.

You're not as objective and unbiased as you make yourself out to be. One, you put me to a double standard, two, you put Valve to a double standard.

I like Windows because it is like garlic to Troons and Homosexuals.
Trying to turn Linux vs Windows into a part of muh culture war won't work because Microsoft bows down to the fags more than most other companies that I can think of.

All computers are pozzed. The only way to avoid touching what fags touch is to not use them at all.

Nigger you do not have any friends. This is the least believable thing you are complaining about here.

I just want steam to not use so much memory and be faster :(.

You have to trick it into letting you set up a local account.
I don't think clicking the "Domain join instead" button on the OOBE constitutes as a "trick" but you do you buddy.

Also, many of the pre-installed programs in the OS will not work whatsoever without signing into a Microsoft account
I use LTSC so generally the only program that would need to be signed in for a Microsoft Account would be Windows Store (if i reinstalled the bastard thing) but to my understanding on other editions such as Home and Professional most of those programs you are talking about mostly constitute the Microsoft Store, XBOX App, OneDrive and I believe that Windows Phone app? Most programs on Windows 10 do not require a Microsoft Account.

The vast majority of games work flawlessly now
I'll have to benchmark performance at some point since I have a 2070 and a super cool CPU now (with my old quad core Haswell + RX 460 there was always a noticeable -10fps hit to performance in games) but having to juggle different Wine versions with some games just not opening at all for me is not nice at all, I've had one game just flat out refuse to open though mind you it could've been a proton issue, IDK! Imagine telling some retard that "no you can't use Wine11 for this theres a bug that causes a problem, use Wine10 instead, install this then run this in the command line anytime you want to run the game" "??????? i just want double click game work please".

All computers are pozzed.
My Neoware CA22 with a VIA C7 isn't pozzed, just slow.
