The Worst Game Endings - Or How to Ruin Good Gameplay with Bad Writing (Spoilers, duh)

MGS5. Quiet walks off into the sunset to die. A third of your employees are dead from the coof and you personally executed a few of them. Huey fucks over the Diamond Dogs by selling them out to the feds. Sure Skullface is dead but Zero is still out there pulling the strings from behind the curtains. I guess things were supposed to wrap more cleanly but Konami were fed up with Kojima. It was a really depressing note to end the game on. It needed a sequel or DLC that will never happen.
...god don't get me started with that game and it's "secret ending". Regardless even of that, the game pretty much has no real ending. It just ends when it feels like it. Hek, even if the game had ended with just chapter 1 which effectively wraps up the main story, it still would have had a bad ending although at least you got an ending.

Essentially everything that happened to Command And Conquer. Red Alert and Tiberian Sun.

Honestly didn't mind the whole Japanese 3rd Faction in Red Alert, its just how they essentially shitcanned it afterwards. Then, you have the Tiberium timeline. The last real game was 3 and Kane's Wrath. As Twilight is absolutely horrible as they turned the game into a shitty moba. Also the ending of the story was absolute ass and completely drops the ball when it comes to storytelling as established by the previous games.

Command And Conquer is literally Kane trying to take over the world. GDI is there to stop him. Also, WTC bombing.

Command And Conquer Tiberian Sun starts showing that Kane is trying to evolve humanity but it seems dubious as alot of Tiberium experiments are just outright inhuman. Also not helping is CABAL who is trying to turn humans into cyborgs. And you have GDI trying to restore the old order of the world and at the same time, grappling with the reality of their changed world.

Command And Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars is GDI desperately trying to survive in a world completely terraformed by Tiberium. However, here is where you see the bad side of GDI. They are more or less the stereotypical blue helmets as memed by the net. Completely selfish, working for its own interest and perfectly fine with leaving humanity to rot in the red zones all the while barely enforcing the yellow zones and content in staying in their blue zones. Sound familiar? Nod in the other hand is trying their best to not only survive, but also keep people together. Actively helping people within the yellow and red zones. Not helping are the arrival of aliens. Part of Kane's plan.

Then you finally have Kane's Wrath. Where you see Kane's vision in action. Here, his plans are laid bare. He plans to uplift humanity via Ascension. He wants mankind to not only survive the hot mess known as Tiberium, but to also reach their full potential. Hence the extra emphasis towards advancing technology. Throughout the games, you actually see Nod's tech evolve. In 1, they are just people who looted a whole slew of second hand weaponry and equipment with a few exotics such as stealth technology. By 2, they have tech on par with GDI but also have futuristic shit such as lasers and cyborgs as well as tunneling vehicles. 3 and Wrath is where they have mecha and fine-tuned their laser and stealth technology. In this game, you actually see this trying to connect the dots between 2 and 3 with Wrath laying the final pieces of stonework.

And then you have Twilight which is basically Kane re-enacting ET with him phoning home.

As far as I'm concerned, the story ends with Kane utterly demolishing (((GDI))) and uplifts humanity via ascension.
Yeah, and the writers also fuck over GDI. All of the fancy tech that's created in TibSun and Firestorm just goes poof between that and TibWars. Also, by the time of that game the GDI has undertaken at least one large-scale reclamation project to expand their control and push back tiberium, and the entire reason Kane launches his offensive in TibWars is because the GDI is beginning to stand down from their hyper-militarism and put even more focus on reclaiming the Earth from Tiberium now that Kane is finally dead and NOD is just a shattered remnant of its former self. Hell, they've been standing down for a while which is why none of the good stuff like Kodiaks, hover craft, and Wolverines and Titans are still around, but cheap, effective, garrison and patrol units like the Predator and APC... which isn't even amphibious anymore.

As to the Red Zones, they're absolute hellscapes you need to be a literal alien like the Scrin to survive in (and indeed the entire point of Tiberium is that it terraforms worlds into raw resources for them to harvest) so there's nobody fucking there to even take care of, and the Yellow Zones are about as controllable as any of Fallout's settings, and NOD only operates in them so they can have an endless tide of poorly-trained militants to throw at GDI, helpfully organized and lead by totally-not-Commissar Confessors. And lets not forget NOD's suicide bombers.
This might be a little controversial, but I don't like Fear: Extraction Point's ending. It's not that it's a downer ending, the problem is that it's a downer ending that doesn't feel earned. The FEAR helicopter explodes for no reason and Fetel being a ghost doesn't make any sense.
In the Ghost of Fettle's own words earlier in the game: "You killed me. I didn't like that. This doesn't make sense. None of this makes sense anymore." What really ticks me off is what he says afterwards during the ending, and you, the player realize that Alma might just be getting started with her retaliation. "They tried to bury their sins, but instead planted the seeds of their doom. But she would not be forgotten. WE will make them remember. They will die, heh heh heh. All of them. A war is coming. I've seen it in my dreams. Fire sweeping the earth, bodies in the streets, cities turned to dust. Retaliation."

And then the next two games do absolutely nothing to explore the concept of the Ghost of Alma Wade and the Ghost of Paxton Fettle waging psychic war against mankind as punishment for its sins against Alma, and you, the only one in the family that isn't a nutjob, maybe needing to develop psychic powers of your own in order to stop them. After all, we were promised by Harlan the minute we were born to become a god among men.

I've never played any mainline MGS games only Revengeance but even I know 95% of MGS5 is filler. Kinda like Death Strading which looks like an absolute slogfest to play.

To list a whole "worst game" ArcaniA "Gothic 4". 3, while a buggy mess of retarded design and development decisions, wrapped the whole story up neatly. The first two games had singular endings and 3 had a bunch of 'em and every single one of them felt satisfying to me. Hand victory to the humans with King Rhobar either alive (Resistance) or dead (Mercenaries); hand victory to the actually Innos-fearing Orcs (what a twist), give all the chalices to the evil Sand Niggers Hashishi; find Xardas, jump through a bunch of hoops, murder both the good and the evil gods then fuck off to Infinity and Beyond.

"Gothic 4" starts out with a whole new protagonist, tosses in the PC's old buddies from the previous games for good measure, initiates a "simple country boy who's madly in love with the chieftain's daughter and the chieftain disapproves and then Evil People invade and murder everyone and you must find out why and get your revenge" with the first big twist being the fate of the old PC, now insane King Rhobar the 3(?). It was a competely unnecessary game which added nothing to the old trilogy and it was even buggier than 3. Voice acting was shit too, comparable to STALKER CoP's English VA.

@Snekposter (Sorry for some reason the site isn't letting me reply to you).
I agree.

To add to what I was saying before, I don't think that the rest of Extraction Point meshes with the ending (the helicopter explosion or Fettle's monolouge). This is just my personal theory, but I thought what was going on in Extraction Point was that Alma's ghost had completely lost its shit and split apart into multiple entities. There is one 'adult' entity that just wants to kill everyone and a 'child' entity that doesn't. The adult entity controls the ghost-things and is just a raging monster that loyal to no-one (including Fettle) while the child entity is still kinda human and wants to protect Point Man. I thought the last hallucination sequence in Extraction Point is supposed to represent the two entities fusing/ Alma coming to peace.

Wasn't that the game that had the whole "Disarm Nukes in multiplayer to unlock the DOUBLE SUPER SECRET ending" that was eventually found out to be absolute bullshit because the game was rigged for it to never actually be possible to Disarm every Nuke in the world even with massive cheating?

No Time, the dollar store Back to the Future rip-off game, where you, not-Marty and not-Doc go on a time travel adventure unraveling the fabric of space time until shit is completely FUBAR, so they decided maybe time travel is bad and we should let God decide things for us instead, but not really because the whole fucking thing was a dream.

Sidenote, but the dev is kinda creepy and gives me bad vibes, he has a link to some weird Christian Remnant cult called "The Remnant Army" in the game. I don't know much about Christianity or religion for that matter but the whole thing is just weird, what is this doing in a fucking time travel simulator?

I have no idea, but knowing Kojima, he probably had something either stupid he wanted to implement or impossible to implement. Two characteristics he's exhibited in the past. Even then, why would you make a game that doesn't really have one main story? What would disarming nukes have to do with the whole language virus crap in chapter 1? MGSV is simply a mess any way you cut it.

MGS 5 is infamously "incomplete" but its mostly just implied that Big Boss, the real one, was off creating the real Outer Heaven while you were doing your things and the ending is basically you accepting your forced identity as the Big Boss's phantom (aka his decoy).

It was all just to explain how Big Boss returns in MG2 even tho you killed him in MG1. Turns out that was Venom Snake and not the real one.

But yeah, the ending felt rushed and this whole game felt like explaining things that didnt need to be explained that much. Kojima has a bad habit of over explaining a few things while under explaining others.
2. You refuse to use the nuke, so the mother forces you to drink the cure and you mutate into a predator zombie like her and fight her melee style, as all the people in the tower you saved also turn to zombies and eat each other. Once you beat her, you somehow just wander out of the inescapable containment zone and attack a mother and child at a park, basically dooming the world.

Dying Light 2 confirms that is the canon ending. It really feels like The Following's ultimate intention was to setup the sequel since the vanilla game did not.

And its a surprisingly underwhelming one at that.

Also the twist that its a military creation was extremely cliched and I would have prefered they never explained this fucking virus.

Thats why MGS4 is the true final game in the series for me. Peace Walker is an alright epilogue I guess. Revengence being set after 4 never sat right with me and MGS5 clearly is a storytelling mess that needed more re-writes.

Yes.

Short of it is there has never been a legit nuke ending triggered. Always by someone cheating or bug abuse that it has ever happened. And will never legit happen do to bugged "phantom nukes", and really stupid way nuke tab is programed with many other factors.

And if the ending was triggered konomi would just roll back on it because it wasn't legit total disarment, because by the stated rules it literally impossible to disarm all nukes in a legitimate manner.

Maybe in 2035 when AVGN starts to cover ps3/4 games he will give us the real ending we all deserve and drop a F nuke on this shit load of fuck.

Yeah that was the video I saw about it, I couldn't remember which Metal Gear Game it was though.

Someday I await the Great Awakening that The Metal Gear Solid Series isn't nearly as good as people say it is and that Kojima is a fucking hack.

I agree they not as good as people say, but they still fun games to play. Story wise you are better just turning off your brain because of the nonsense story later always devolves into.

The only one, I can recommend story wise is rising. Not because the story is any good, but because the story becomes so bonkers by the end you stop caring and want to see how more nonsensical it can get.

Best way to put is it. If story of metal gear is like making a omelet, then Kojima keeps breaking too many eggs and now the omelet is half cooked.

I wonder if he will have any hair by then. Given how quick his hairline is failing him, I doubt it.

Im not a James Rolf defender but I will say that losing your hair legit sucks and he doesnt want to do implants, use a wig or go full bald like Doug Walker did. He seems to just want to pretend like its not happening but even his biggest fans are commenting on it on his most recent AVGN videos.

Thats why MGS4 should have been the end. Everything was setup for this to be the final entry in the series. Kojima recognized this was all getting silly and complicated and thus it was time to close the book.

For me, there is no MGS after 4, it ends with David making peace with his father in that cemetery but sharing one last cigar between them both. Then going on his way to live while he still had life left in him.

That was the end for me, anything else just felt extremely unnecessary.

Hilariously I think Senator Armstrong might be the smartest written Metal Gear Character.

Even if he was meant to be an over the top parody...he kind of ended up being not entirely wrong. The main series always kind of had a smug pretentiousness about it's "War is bad" which is kind of at odds with the fact that the Military Industrial Complex's forever war meatgrinders affect the Lower and Middle classes the most since those are the ones who send their children to die half a world away.

Armstrong..didn't have that he kind of maintained a Blue Collar attitude and actually wanted to end the entire cycle..not just deal with whatever big bad is currently...being a weirdo freak of nature.

Counter point.

If it ended we would never have the living meme that is armstrong.

My issue is that it takes place after 4 when this destroys raiden's arc that started in MGS 2 and ended in 4. He was raised to be a weapon, the tip of someone's spear but he was able to achieve what he wanted at the end, have a "fairy tale" ending with a wife and son that love him deeply and that he loves back. MGS 4 was all about dropping from the path of violence and actually "live". That went for both David and Jack.

Having Raiden back at slashing dudes is cool and all but its just not Metal Gear to me. This would have worked better as the midquel between 2 and 4 that it was originally intended to be.

Dont get me started that it ends on a cliffhanger that will never be solved because this is where the timeline end.

this is something I should save for the Unpopular Opinion thread tho.

Even better when people hear his speech for the first time, and hear the whole MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN and find it out it predates trump(Ronald Reagan).

It would be a lie to say I haven't watched armstrong's speech over 50 times.

The best way to put it is that the series, like Kingdom Hearts, wasn't planned, hence why pretty much each installment convolutes, contradicts, or retcons what came before. This is why I like MGS1 the most. It was a fairly simple self-contained story with a good heel of an antagonist (unlike the rest of the series), and it didn't need a follow up although a follow up was hinted at in the end. MGS2 completely screwed all this up.

Bloodborne. I love it, but really, the endings are shit.

Ending Uno: You're released of the dream by Old Man Jenkins, you wake up as the sun rises in Yharnam, where it's quite probable all but two people you saved are dead. As the camera fades, you hear someone yell "My leg!"

Ending Dos: With you refusing to leave the dream, Old Man Jenkins decides to kick your ass. When you finally beat him, the HR Rep comes down from the moon, eats your foot and apparently binds you to the Hunter's Dream as your predecessor was. In this case, it's you who screams "My leg!"

Ending Tres: At any point during the game, you need to... i guess eat(?!) at least three bits of umbilical cords out of four you can find. The excess stem cells in your system makes you unpalatable to the HR Rep, who is now ID'd as The Moon Presence. When you kick it's ass, the screen fades to black, and the Doll picks up a weird looking slug thing from what were apparently your clothes a few moments ago, implying you turned into that. Roll credits.

not a bad ending, really

I don't really get the point of that autistic crusade in the video, maybe in the year after the game's release. But it's expecting subtlety from a dude that feels the need to reiterate the same point 20 times, and restraint from a company that whored out its IP for Yakuza gambling machines.
The rewards was always meant to just be that single cutscene. Anything more would have just been a DLC that was sold a month after the game's release.
