Conferences can be great for socializing with really smart people. It's just hard to find them, because there's so many hangers-on there. The trick used to be to go to a few talks each session, leaving if they weren't obviously actually the smartest guys in the room. When you find one that's actually smart and groundbreaking, hang around after, ask a few questions, move away while the autists ask dumb questions, and then hunt the speaker down and chat some more later in the conference/a few minutes after.

That, and do a bunch of small talk until you find big talk at the parties. Don't get bogged down in stupid shit, do talk stupid shit with smart people.

I'm speaking at a tech conference in a few months, and I guarantee I'll find actually smart people, and also I'll have to overhear some of Dong-long-gone's gross bullshit as well. Ugh.
