The Rock has amazing charisma and was one of the best wrestlers of all time, but that doesn't mean he knows how to run a football league

I think he knows a thing or two about entertainment in general, but you're right. It would be smart if he let those who helped get the 2020 season off the ground (and want their jobs back for another try…) just keep doing their thing while he stays hands-off except for when a check needs writing.

Is he even doing anything other than writing checks and being the face of the league?

It sounded like his ex-wife was going to do more of the day by day operation shit from what I had read.

Where's the heart?

This shit looks like another boring CFL. Guess that's what we should expect from failed football player Dwayne Johnson chasing his childhood dream.

“For us, this is more than just a new pro football logo; this is a new era of the XFL. You can already begin to feel the energy and mana building behind our brand
Will someone please tell The Rock to go fuck himself with this shit?

The X represents the INTERSECTION OF DREAMS & OPPORTUNITY. So, to our hungry XFL players, coaches and fans – you bring the dreams, and we’ll bring the opportunity.”
Jesus Christ, he really can't get over that he didn't have the makings of a varsity athlete, huh?

Both logos and taglines are generic enough that I'm willing to accept it's just coincidental, but that's still not an argument in the new logo's favor.

The Rock and some executive did a terrible, corporatized announcement teaming up with Disney.

I don't like Disney, but this does address the problem the last version had: they were hopping networks every week, sometimes within the same weekend. There was no one-stop option to watch everything. You had to visit their website each weekend to hunt for the game you wanted to watch.

But the way this was announced, the soundbites, the corporate shilling, the 100% marketing language, this was just awful. The Rock was spontaneously mixing in phrases from old wrestling promos before dropping them, and everything else sounded like corporate begging. Maybe that's the point of this particular event (Disney Upfront 2022), I think they were speaking in front of advertisers. But it still managed to kill the presentation. When The Rock is delivering bad, awkward promos, you have really screwed something up.

"The XFL is going to be a league of passion, a league of pride, and a lead of culture. Those three anchors are going to be the things that fuel every aspect of our league from top to bottom."

What does that even mean?

You can't start out with "culture", you build that up over time. I can guess at what they were trying to say, that they want to revive old school fun American football and the culture it used to have, but the fact that they can't even articulate it means it's a bad start. That sounded like such a rehearsed, committee-designed mantra, you just know it's up on motivational posters already plastered in their office, before anyone thought of a way to deliver on it.

Anyway, we have a new start date:

"The XFL officially launches on February 18, 2023."

I'm not hopeful. All I want is version 2 back, it didn't die because of its structure, it died because of Covid. I don't see how stacking on slogans and emotional marketing makes the promise of hard-hitting, fast and fun football any better.

Like I said, where's the heart?
This is all just corporate bullshit with a dash of Dwaynes samoan mana marketing bullshit on top.
Even the fact that the XFL's blimp lost control and took a nosedive into a seafood restaurant is more entertaining than this. And with corporate bullshit and politics infesting the NFL, you'd think they would take advantage of the opportunity to create something that didn't do that.

I bet the new XFL doesn't even have a blimp.

Looks like XFL just signed a massive contract with Disney (who owns ESPN, and, well, a lot of other stations.)

Alright all we have to do now is convince Antonio Brown to join the XFL so he can be in the next Kingdom Hearts game

as your party member who takes off his shirt and leaves 30 seconds into a boss fight because you're not using enough healing items on him.

The USFL is perfectly watchable and it's doing good enough in ratings from what I've heard, so so long as the monkey pox doesn't cut the season short, it looks like it might be around for a while. Following his purchase of the league, Dwayne has given us a lame new logo and a bunch of bloviating, and now this deal with The Mouse instead of something interesting like the CFL. Meanwhile the USFL is giving us actual football. I'm no longer excited for the XFL project.

The XFL has been spamming one of my email accounts with "news", merch sales, and random corporate messages for months. Their site and team logos are some of the most soulless corporate design examples ever. I kept meaning to write it up, but DDOS-happy trannies refused to let me. The new season kicks off next month, so may as well do it now.

The whole site is stark black and white, as if they learned the wrong lessons about clean web design. All of the announcements so far have been about hiring executives, brand partnerships, new merch designs, and other things that look like emails to investors.

To their credit, $20-$25 per ticket is a good deal, if they can deliver on the football side of things.

Selling team gear for months before the teams even have players signed is about as carny as you can get. And they are really pushing it, about 60% of the emails I got are about merch, new designs, or sales.

I've never heard of Zoa, probably none of the players have either until they're told to drink some on camera.

Overall it continues to feels too slick and corporate, like someone bought a Standard Sports League Product and started customizing the template by pasting "XFL" in all the blanks. The last incarnation under Vince undersold the corporate aspects and focused on the football play itself, working out the packaging as they went, and it worked for me.

If XFL 3.0 can deliver on something entertaining to watch, maybe it'll be nice to have the shiny wrapper already around a good product. We'll see in another month.

XFL really benefits from the fun ruleset but the USFL being around watering down a talent pool that's already pretty shallow doesn't seem to be a good sign for this go around.

There really needs to be some kind of American football pyramid that works as an effective minor league/feeder system. The XFL and USFL merging would be a good start next year.

If a league can prove itself to last longer than a season or two, it'll really improve the talent pool and you might have more guys willing to do that than just hang around on practice squads hoping for the best. There's just too much college talent that slips through the cracks just wasting away on benches and taxi squads.

A true world championship between USFXL champion and CFL champ could be a fun little diversion before the NFL season starts.

Really push into sensible international markets too. A lot of history in Germany, wouldn't hurt to put some kind of AA type league there with the old NFL Europe branding too, Frankfurt Galaxy managed to stick around after all. Maybe even put a team in Mexico City or Monterrey to really test the feasibility of having a franchise there.

The XFL sent an email touting a video of their training camp.

Well, let's hit that Instagram link and see how they're doing...

lol, what a bunch of carnies. Same error for their xflnewshub account too.

There's also a pitch for "The Huddle", which is some kind of XFL fan club social network thing.

The XFL is excited to build tomorrow's league with the voice of our fans. Join The Huddle, an exclusive fan network made up of people like you who want to be heard, connect and share insights about the league and our eight teams. As a member, you will receive exclusive benefits throughout the year, participate in surveys, polls and discussions specific to on and off-the-field topics and give insights on how we, the XFL, can deliver what our fans want. Space is limited so sign up today to help shape tomorrow's league. Join The Huddle.

I don't know how much more spam they can send out. Also why pretend "space is limited" for a glorified mailing list?

I never knew this existed, and I never knew how much I want to watch this shitshow unfold live. Worst case it'll just be boring. Best case, I can tell people I was there the SECOND time the XFL failed.
