Theme Park Simulation Games

What are your favorite theme park/roller coaster games? (i.e. RollerCoaster Tycoon, Planet Coaster, Thrillville, NoLimits)

I put in hours with the likes of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 & 3.

I really need to try out Planet Coaster sometime.
 
I used to play RTC 2 when I was younger (got it from a cereal box too!)

I now have the GOG.com version and I play it on and off. It's more fun if you get Open RTC 2 too.

The days when you could get CD's from cereal boxes were the best. RTC 1 + 2 were the ones I spent the most time with.

Right now Planet Coaster is kind of over hyped in my opinion, the creation part is good if that's all you're interested in but the scenario/management part is lacking in comparison to the older theme park management games.
 
The ones I have played are Sim Coaster and Roller Coaster Tycoon.

I wish the Steam version did not have so many "quirks" with my system tho.
 
One of my favorites I consider underrated is Theme Park World

It's more of a sequel to the original Theme Park and less a reaction to Rollercoaster Tycoon. Which came out the same year.

It's simulation aspect is also much simpler. It's designed more for younger children, especially with it's very goofy and upbeat atmosphere. Like there's park themes ranging from a "Space" themed park to a "Halloween" themed park.

I also remember one of my favorite aspects of it was you could view the park from the perspective of a guest and ride all of the rides. Or walk around. This is a relatively mundane feature today but at the time I was blown away by it.

It also had no copy protection and kind of hard to run on modern systems. I remember I played the PS1 version the most.

Yeah this was my jam too, I loved it.
 
RCT 3, FTW. The customization options in that game makes the game sooo much better.

Was this before\after the Hasbro CD Roms in cereal boxes? I'm fairly certain I remember seeing RCT and others around the time I snagged a few Hasbro board game discs from boxes.

Edit: BTW, My first intro to these "Amusement Park" sims was renting Theme Park on Sega Genesis. Of course I still own that copy as well.

This was around that exact time. I got a fair amount of board game adaptations from them as well.

Eh, the management of RCT was mostly smoke and mirrors as well, the difficulty only came from the absurdly short timespan they would give you to complete objectives, or the fact that the guests would get stuck in a routing loop for eternity if you dared to have a park with multiple pathways.

Yeah, it was around that time. I remember getting a couple others from that promotion too, like Monopoly Jr., Tonka Search & Rescue and Sorry.
 
I know this is thread necroing but anyone on the farms ever played OpenRCT2?
I know I gave it a spin but it felt like it was designed to be used if you really liked RCT2 back in the day. Sort of like how SimCity 4 in its patched-together state isn't really meant to be played unless you were playing it twenty years ago.

I'm tempted by Planet Coaster being so low on Steam right now ($3) but I also feel like without DLC its going to be really limited. Still...it's 95% off, and that at least allows mods, right?

I played a LITTLE of Planet Coaster. Don't know why, even, I don't even like theme parks or ride rollercoasters in real life. It actually got me interested in roller coaster design (a bit), I never gave any consideration before to how they work (it's almost all gravity). But what stunned me is how autistic and detailed the game is, and in a good way.

Theme park construction is some insane 100/10 IQ gigabrained economics. Thing is that even the slightest change to your park layout can totally fuck up your profitability. People wander around, you have to bury things deep in the park to lure them towards spending opportunities, you have to worry about the lines. Adding a rollercoaster doesn't mean you've added one more rollercoaster's worth of income, it means you have made a change that in a million ever-so-slight ways alters each and every other part of your careful ecosystem, possibly throwing the park into chaos, possibly actually lowering raw revenues.

And you can't just carefulyl build piece by piece, because it throws in another layer of complexity in that the park's customer base's expectations realistically evolve. They're not interested in your old worn down piece of shit coaster until it is SO old it becomes "nostalgic" or "retro" or whatever. If you stay the same you will die a slow death.

It's a fucking Eight Wonder of the World.

(No, I didn't particularly like it.)
