There is a critical bug Nintendo did not fix for the Zelda Game & Watch. Selling Links Awakening in 2021 with this is not a good look. - Tales pre-internet

I guess I fucked up this thread and made it about MissingNo

MissingNo corrupted my life apparently, because I've never been interested in anything Pokemon outside the goofy code and glitches in the first game once I went down that rabbit hole.

MissingNo corrupted the thread. It can't keep getting away with this!

Since my autistic thread is now about MissingNo, here’s my autistic horror story.

Just like how my late-teen self was fascinated by the potential of the Select Glitch, I too tried going too far with the Missing-Family.

My sister had named the file, and some Canadian, Bubblegum-pop chick who went by “Jo-Jo” was popular at the time, and that’s what she named the character.

So there I was glitching on this “Jo-Jo” file, not realizing that hyphen was like a door to Hell.

If you guys didn’t know, MissingNo and his family sometimes change details depending on which alphabet characters you use. So the Hyphen ended up unlocking a full blown MissingNo Trainer. Seeing a Scientist Sprite with the description “Chief Wants to Fight” was freaky enough, then he unleashed a monstrous, demonic blob of a sprite more scarier than MissingNo ever was. The game hung, my bowels squirmed.

And the next day at school, I had a new “rumour” to spread around the playground, expecting my clout just as I did on this very thread’s OP yesterday.

In my version of Pokemon Blue (but not Red), I'd randomly have Blaine challenge me to a fight instead of MissingNo just popping up. He'd use MissingNo in the fight I think, but it was a mix of weird pokemon and other glitch pokemon.

I know like 10 years ago I found out it was cause the third fifth and...seventh? character in the name effected what pokemon/trainers would show up on cinnabar shore but it was pretty cool at the time.

In many cases today, probably even in this case, you're buying it AND emulating it.
It is. Here's a wiki on the hardware: https://www.reddit.com/r/GameAndWatchMods/wiki/hardware

So I plugged the CPU's model no. into Google, and found that you can buy a dev board with plenty of GPIO pins, with the exact same processor for $21 from this shady looking site: https://www.banggood.com/STM32H750V...d-TFT-Interface-with-USB-Cable-p-1804401.html

So it's running on more or less a Raspberry Pi Zero kind of machine.

My Pokémon Red cartridge went to shit because of MissingNo, I think.

I remember you could duplicate items and Pokémon in Gold/Silver.

I googled it because I thought you made a joke topic about the Game & Watch from the 80s.

Seems like a cool thing to have but also kinda useless. They should have thrown the DX version in there.

I don't see how that is possible. Old school GB cartridges were mask ROM, it would be basically impossible to damage the rom outside of some wild power surge. That kind of hardware manipulation shouldn't be possible, even in the worst circumstances. Nothing that can cause permanent damage should ever be controlled in software. If that was somehow allowed, that just speaks to incredibly poor hardware design.

It's possible the save files were damaged and the game wouldn't start with corrupted save files, but this was before they implemented flash memory for save files. They still used battery-backed RAM. You'd just have to remove the battery to wipe the save RAM and the game should boot just fine.
