there's apparently a new Bubble Bobble game coming out

I don't read Japanese so I'm having to do some guessing. It looks like it plays like regular Bubble Bobble, but with treasure chests that appear... sometimes? Actually that element worries me that it might have lootboxes.

To be honest, I would rather have a home port of Bubble Symphony and Bubble Memories rather than an all new game, but I might give this a shot when it comes out.

While I am appreciative that the series continues to exist, holding a very special place in my heart for various reasons, the new character art style and presentation is just so painfully generic. Looks fresh off the CG Jap assembly line. The charm is completely absent. I refuse to acknowledge them as Bob or Bub.

I sincerely hope it does well, though.

I hope Bubble Bobble isn't turned into a gatcha game, but I'm not optimistic.

Think I'll fire up an emulator and play the C64 remaster of the OG Bubble Bobble instead.

The original is nostalgic but not great beyond short, rare bursts. I do like Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble more as a game, but I kinda suck at it. Otherwise I haven't played much in the series, I'm not sure it's really for me. Maybe if there's a traditional platformer among them or something.

That this series still lives in an industry where many of it's peers bit the dust warms my heart
I agree.

I've been under a rock, apparently, since I only knew about Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-Move. I've been playing a lot of retro games lately- excited to add Bubble Bobble to my list.

I wish the game could be beaten in a short amount of time.

Glad to introduce it to you. The original Bubble Bobble has its issues but its considered a classic for good reason.

I grew up with the NES version, which I don't think is entirely arcade accurate.

And of course its the beginning of a series, but unpacking that could be the theme of an AVGN Chronologically Confusing video.

Oh goodie, I'd much rather have a new Bubble Bobble than GTA6 or HL3.

(note: not sarcasm)

Enjoy, it's rather quaint but worth playing.

A couple different songs and environments would go a long way too.

Bubble Bobble is my favorite trad arcade game of all time, for a reason a lot of people aren't aware of : The game has internal memory that tracks shitloads of statistics about how often things have happened in the game and it's used for the item spawn logic. These statistics don't reset between games, and some of them are extremely bizarre; eg. there are some items you can only see by entering dev initials or SEX or a couple other words on the highscore boards. Basically every single weird rumor about 'if you do X a hundred times item Y will spawn' is true. It's absolutely insane how much hidden shit is buried in that game. Seriously look at this shit. (e: pretty sure that list is incomplete as well, offhand FUK also makes the fork spawn because I remember finding that hilarious as a teenager)

It's one of my biggest pet peeves that no home versions ever copy that, because BB is the original weird rumor secrets game.

To be fair, it would be hard to implement secrets that rely on the machine being kept running, in a home port where the user is definitely not gonna do that.

I recall Ancient DOS Games covered that version and brought up an issue that disk damage might have affected things as some power ups were rarer than they were supposed to be.
