Things that give you hope for the future - Take off those nightmare goggles for a second!

Optimism is how you show weakness.
As a pessimist I am only ever vindicated or pleasantly surprised.

The only things that give me any hope are the knowledge that China is a fucking paper tiger and we've got a president that loves to play with matches, and the fact that a God might actually exist because as it turns out my enemies are fucking ridiculous.

Gen Z kids are fucking hilarious and really seem to have a seething hatred for namby-pamby bullshit. Makes my old , black-heart smile
The first time that I heard Soph speak and she said "I'm inoculated to that bullshit and so is the rest of gen z", I breathed a genuine sigh of relief.
Those kids are going to do okay.

Yeah, it seems to skip a social generation. I see it at the VFW alot. WW2 guys always seem to like the Gulf War/Iraq/Afghan invasion guys in Gen X, but hate the Korea/Vietnam boomers and millennials who were there for GWoT police actions. I'd venture to guess it has to do with the WW2 and Gen X guys having outright rejected the post-modernist bullshit that the others can't help themselves around. Where the Vietnam and Enduring Freedom guys seem to almost wallow in their sorrow for the Iraqi/Afghan/Vietnamese they fought against, the rest of us just have a very "Fuck you and your politics, Im just doing my goddamed job" mentality

Personal matters? The fact that I'm for the most part a relatively happy and financially stable person. I'm no one's idea of rich, but I have a good, stable job, a roof over my head, food in my refrigerator, money to use on hobbies and entertainment (in moderation) a small group of friends that all care about each other. It might sound like a boring life, but it's one I'm comfortable with. I consider myself lucky compared to some people I've known that had the opportunity to better themselves and wasted it. I'm happy with my life, and at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

As for humanity as a whole, the fact that we've kept on persevering and doing better and better things with what we're given. Societial norms these days might seem a little fucked, but taking that out of the equation, we've accomplished a great deal in a mere 100 years. This quote from Heinlein says it better than I ever could. Honestly got me misty eyed the first time I read it.

And finally, I believe in my whole race. Yellow, white, black, red, brown. In the honesty, courage, intelligence, durability, and goodness of the overwhelming majority of my brothers and sisters everywhere on this planet. I am proud to be a human being. I believe that we have come this far by the skin of our teeth. That we always make it just by the skin of our teeth, but that we will always make it. Survive. Endure. I believe that this hairless embryo with the aching, oversize brain case and the opposable thumb, this animal barely up from the apes will endure. Will endure longer than his home planet -- will spread out to the stars and beyond, carrying with him his honesty and his insatiable curiosity, his unlimited courage and his noble essential decency.

This I believe.

Don't you love it when that happens?
