But devil’s advocate, why do people treat SPAM like it’s really bad for you? I mean of course it is bad for your based on calories and such but why really really bad?
Because it came around in an era where salt and fat were starting to be decried as evil and all diets should be nothing but carbs on carbs. It only survived the propaganda because soldiers and hawaii couldn't stop eating the stuff while slop started cornering the market for the next 80 years and now it has a reputation.

Spam is honestly amazing breakfast meat, better than sausage by far. I don't get why people think it's pork slop, hotdogs are pork slop and people love that, but SPAM is up front about what it is, salted pork shoulder. You can point out what part of the pig is SPAM and it drives me insane.
It's basically sausage. But better since it's just the shoulder meat ground up and pressed into a solid loaf for canning.

Any dish that calls for sausage or diced pork meat can be made with Spam. It's very versatile. It's bad reputation comes from its use as emergency food, war time rations and wat not. What is funny is that the Asians fell in love with it for this reason. Pork is big in Asian cooking and after World War 2 was hard to come by...unless it came in a can of Spam. You can't throw a stick in any East Asian country without it landing within 10 feet of a can of Spam now.
 
SPAM can go (almost) anywhere bacon or sausage can go.
Anyone else every had a SLT? You have to slice the SPAM real thin and get it really crispy.

I think I'm gonna do baked Mac and cheese with fried cubed spam in it soon. Probably fry the spam with chopped onion, peppers, and garlic. Will report back.

It's the reason my Grandad refused to have it in the house. He must have lived predominantly off of it at some point during the War.

Processed red meat is supposedly linked to an increased risk of stomach/colon cancers. But then again half the things most people eat and drink nowadays will probably kill you just as quickly so it's probably a bunch of bullshit anyway.
