The "people can be very close on the autism spectrum but not on the political spectrum" rings true. Since political ideologies actually do differ, I don't mind that people say there's no overlap between a very conservative society covering all women verses a very liberal society encouraging nakedeness for everyone in front of everything. The way people can get dedicated, feverishly so, to their beliefs, the way once a party or person gets power they similarly abuse it, the way they act towards new converts and apostates, that's the similar part.

If you don't look at it very closely you can draw some similarities (so it's perfect for character limited social media "gotchas"). Granted when you dig into it you find it's really just superficial. But the horseshoe theory isn't exactly ever used to actually analyse political viewpoints to any meaningful degree.

I disagree. IMO horseshoe theory delves into the underlying similarities that extremism take. I will use the left right paradigm but it pertains to all types of fanaticism. The core similarities between fanatics makes living under one quite similar to the average person even if the stated goals are different.

1. Fanatics do no like free speech.
2. Fanatics like government powers that limit their opponents.
3. Fanatics use, or advocate the use of, violence to enforce the first two points.
4. Fanatics always have an enemy they are fighting against.

Fanatics often have a strict adherence to the rule of maintaining and keeping power ABOVE any stated fanatical goals. The goal of the fanatic is to be on top. Which is why fanatics viewpoints often change once they have reached power or change in order to reach power. This about face type behavior is what leads to the whole "horseshoe theory" idea.

If you look at those 4 points then you might realize that every government in human existance exhibits these traits and so one could come to the conclusion that the point being made is moot. I argue that horseshoe theory is basically saying "Everyone seeking power is shit." The former opinion is more optimistic for sure, but I find it naive.
