Back before the internet told us all what to buy, video game box art played a fairly important part of selling the game to potential buyers. I mean how could a pre-teen boy in the eighties resist....

Post your favorite video game box art guys. It can be awesomely tacky like the one above, or artistically
brilliant like... um, the one above..
Retro or modern, rubbish or inspirational, lets see what you like.

I always loved Dragon Warrior II's boxart, it just looks like a sword and sorcery novel or that retro D&D artwork. You could really tell they were trying to appeal to that crowd of tabletop nerds in the west. The game is still one of the hardest RPGs ever made though. Didn't stop my cousin from beating it. I like how the Cannock prince looks way more badass than he actually is. Infact, they all look more badass, again, probably to appeal more to the west.

I knew somebody was gonna post that Megaman cover, did not disappoint.. It's timeless! And that D&D one reminds me of the covers you got for the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks back in the day, brilliant!

This is one of my favorite games, period. And the box art is pretty nifty, too! I mean, look, they included the pipes!
I'm familiar with the game, but I've never actually seen that Epicly eighties cover. Thanks for sharing.

This one's really interesting, because it's a great example of the sometimes huge difference between the covers for the same game in different regions. Here's the Pal version.

Now this, I like! I've never seen it before. I love it when publishers aren't afraid to ship their game with a minimalist box art, I'm not surprised it's Atlus. This falls into the category of cover art I'd gladly hang on my wall.
I'm so glad somebody posted this, you can have an entire thread dedicated to how amazingly bizarre the cover for Phalanx is!

Castlevania. Other Castlevania games have terrific box covers, but the very first Castlevania summed everything about the game up perfectly with some real kick-ass artwork (the only downside is Dracula's lipstick.)

Metal Gear 2: Snake's Revenge was a US and European market sequel for the NES offering of Metal Gear. Sadly, Snake's Revenge shared little in way of the other Metal Gear 2 (Solid Snake), and was very much an inferior game. But it did have some cool box art.

The Japanese and European markets got a pretty cool cover for Ico. Sadly, us Americans got stuck with a bad render over a generic castle scape.
