Well you don't really need for things to be that bad to have a revolution, there's lots of revolutions that happen in relatively well-off countries which have about as much money as your average redneck town. America has had numerous race riots in the past few years alone and across the planet people are doing mass shootings backed by various ideologies. Also the demographic shift in America is unprecedented in its entire history, and that more than anything will have drastic effects down the line as cultures and identities continue to balkanize.
Also, you don't need the majority of people to even participate in a revolution, every political upheaval in the 20th century was done by a minority of people or some relatively small rebel/splinter/revolutionary group, and then everyone else ended up picking a side.
I believe it's incorrect to look at this like the average person doesn't care about this, either. I think it's extremely online people like us who have this idea that everyone's just laughing at this shit. Go to any ghetto or small town and your average person will be bursting at the seams with opinions on what is wrong with the country.
And here's the problem that leads to revolution: all of them, on all sides, have come to the conclusion that the media is bullshit and there is no way to vote these problems away. This would be a different story if the population was at least united in believing the political system could help them, but everyone on every side is flirting with ideas on throwing metaphorical grenades into everything that exists now and people would be incorrect in thinking the same rhetoric existed in the 90s and 80s.
That right there is where revolutions and armed conflicts happen, when people believe the entire thing is too corrupt and if they're so comfy they have nothing else to think about and they are too distanced from what life would be like during one of these revolutions. Nobody has the context to say "let's not do that again" so it seems all the more attractive.
I'd say that if you want to see where things are headed, look to Europe and especially look at gangs. Gangs already segregate along racial lines but when you hear about militia groups walking the streets looking for fights or training in fields, again people can laugh at that but it's literally the first rumblings of armed insurrection. Everyone knows these groups recruit from prisons, and they tend to be the shock troops for this sort of shit. To me it's not even a question of if it's a question of when, it's just a thing that is currently happening and only the most irony-poisoned and culture-fatigued of us are thinking this is one amusing horrorshow.
