TLC really loves trannies, and not just teenage ones like Jazz! A new series, Lost in Transition, has made its appearance on the network, and is already providing viewers with fascinating insight into the minds of mentally ill men and the women they are emotionally blackmailing.
Meet the families of Lost in Transition!
The first two episodes have aired already, and they have introduced all four couples that will be featured on the show. Brief summaries of each family story follow (along with personal remarks in parentheses).
"Lawren" and Jennifer
24 years together
Eastern Virginia
Four kids.
Jennifer: “I don’t think I’m a lesbian; I guess we’ll see!” (slaps knee)
(Larry’s mannerisms are very, very gay. Towards the end of the second episode, he's seeming more and more like a psychopath with this emotional control, flat affect, and general creepy vibe.)
Larry became an alcoholic during their marriage and became suicidal.
Larry: “I’m a woman!” (crazy eyes into camera)
Larry is already taking hormones (the gynecomastia is already apparently through his shirts).
Larry: “There are some days that my gender dysphoria makes me non-functional.”
Larry already attempted suicide once - Jennifer is afraid Larry can’t make it on his own (and it’s clear Larry’s already holding her hostage emotionally; he says "I'm sorry" with no emotion, and she's crying and says that he shouldn't apologize and he did nothing wrong).
Jennifer has had “ladies night” parties every couple of months in the neighborhood, and now Larry wants to “come out” to the group by having Jennifer tell them on her next visit there.
There’s an awkward (probably manufactured) scene where Jennifer and Larry are texting back and forth to each other (“Are you ready?” “I don’t know.” “???” - placing Jennifer into a super-awkward position while she texts on the phone during her fun time with the girls. Larry: “I don’t want to embarass you.” More emotional blackmail.) The final message from Larry is “Okay…I’m coming over.”
Larry has decided to ingratiate himself into LADIES NIGHT by visiting the happy, friendly party, wearing a polo, khaki shorts, and boat shoes, and saying “he’s admired from afar” (ugh), admits that he was a “recluse,” saying he attempted suicide in 2012 (to all these women trying to have a party and relax), and that he couldn’t bring himself to tell anyone why he was “struggling.” He says he’s transgender. The women have distrusting looks and ask if the kids know - cliffhanger, end of episode 2.
Stacy and "Leslie"
11 years together
Northern Washington (Port Angeles, based on the bar they visit in the show)
Stacy: “I guess I’m a lesbian now.”
One kid, one on the way (she became pregnant before he said he was a tranny).
Les is now “Leslie” (and giggles and thinks it’s adorable when he says it! No autogynephilia here!)
The show is already calling Les “Leslie,” as is Stacy. He visited a pub with his wife to greet his coworkers while dressed up in woman’s clothes and wearing makeup. Episode 1 ends with “Leslie” sitting down at the table. Ep 2 opens with Les talking about “how something in him was different since he was 9 or so” (no attempt to affect a female voice whatsoever). The male coworker FIST BUMPS Les (lol), and then deadnames Bruce Jenner in a cutaway interview.
Les seems more concerned about “hormones” having more of an effect on the situation than having another child.
Stacey is already constantly calling Les “she.”
Cameras were not allowed to film inside the gun store in which Les works (oh good! the mentally ill man works at a GUN STORE). Les’ first day at work as a “””woman””” was oh so miserable, he was “misgendered constantly” and called “sir” by customers. Claims his colleague sometimes corrected people.
Both Stacy and Les are already paranoid that there are “sneaky ways to fire people” and that Les will lose his job. End of their segment in Episode 2.
"Karen" and Beverly
25 years together
Western Ohio (Woodville based on the bar they visit)
Two kids.
Beverly: “I am not a lesbian. I married a man…I thought?”
Beverly found several dresses hidden, confronted AJ, and he immediately said he was transgender.
Beverly and AJ have decided to get divorced and sell the house.
The younger daughter refuses to call AJ “mom” because “I was pushed out of my mom and you didn’t have to put up with that.” (go kid!)
Beverly visits a local bar with a female friend and they both get shitfaced, and begins to tell everyone that her husband wanted to be a woman, but (new information, cut to commercial for shock value) her oldest daughter wants to be a man.
Beverly found out about the older estranged daughter Cas wanting to be a man at around the same time as she found out about AJ. (tumblr - not even once!)
It’s easier for Beverly to call Cas her “son” than to call AJ her “wife.” (clearly the family is being torn apart by this transtrender shit)
"Lucy" and Cindy
13 years together
Southern California
Cindy: “I’m NOT a lesbian.”
Troy is 15 years younger than Cindy.
Troy: “I feel like a teenage girl.” “I will be a blossoming flower [on hormones]!” Positively giddy about having “buds” on his chest! (no autogynephilia here!)
Cindy’s best friend Wanda wants her to leave him because it’s his problem, not hers. Wanda has already said that Troy would “make an ugly woman.” Troy is clearly threatened by Wanda and the fact that Wanda is helping Cindy not be persuaded (go Wanda!). Troy becomes angry during the conversation, asking him to take Cindy’s feelings into consideration; he feels there’s “animosity” towards him, even though he makes it all about him constantly.
Troy has already said that he’d rather transition than have a relationship with Cindy.
Troy: “This is why transgender people don’t say shit!” (while looking and acting fully like a man)
Troy: “[to Cindy] It’s always been all about you, and now it’s about me.”
Troy actually goes to a therapist (unfortunately, the therapist “has been working with the trans community for years” and probably doesn’t have both parties’ feelings in mind; Troy is alone at the therapist)
Troy: “I wanna be out; I wanna be outside; I wanna be among people. And I wanna be pretty!” (lol)
Many situations are clearly orchestrated by the TLC production team, but this should provide four fascinating case studies over however many seasons this show might get.
Meet the families of Lost in Transition!
Follow the journey of four couples facing the deeply personal and life-changing decision to undergo gender transformation. The new TLC series, Lost In Transition, follows four relationships where the wives have recently learned their husbands kept a big secret for years: Each husband wants to become a woman.
Told from the wives' point of view, the series examines the confusion, anger, disappointment, and uncertainty that each couple goes through.
Lost In Transition, premiering May 20 at 10/9c, will look at the impact that gender dysphoria has on transgender people, as well as their friends, family and significant others; and how gender identity, and transitioning, affects those close relationships.
You'll witness each couple's journey as they come out to family and friends, take steps forward with the transition process, and figure out how to best evolve their marriages.
Here are the families you'll meet on Lost In Transition:
Jennifer and Larry (Lawren)
Jennifer and Larry (Lawren) met as teenagers while Jennifer was working as a singing waitress on a cruise ship, and they had an instant connection. They have a picture-perfect life: Larry is a successful attorney and Jennifer runs the law office, and they have four kids. They've always been the envy of their Eastern Virginia community; however, no one knew Larry has been secretly battling a deep depression for years. Jennifer was helplessly watching him spin out of control and had no idea what was going on. One night, Larry broke down and told her something he had been hiding his entire life. He revealed to his wife that he wanted to be a woman, and their lives changed instantly. Now, as Larry is becoming "Lawren," Jennifer is trying to hold the family, and their law practice, together.
Stacy and Les (Leslie)
Stacy and Les (Leslie) have known each other since grade school, but they fell for each other as sophomores in high school. Stacy was attracted to Les' oddball sense of humor and she couldn't imagine spending her life with anyone else. Once they got married, they settled into their simple life in a small, rural town in Washington with their toddler son. All was well until Stacy noticed that Les was becoming increasingly irritated with her and the baby for no apparent reason, but one day he finally broke down and confessed that he identified as a woman. Although Stacy initially felt betrayed and confused, she ultimately decided that she wants to do whatever it takes to help her husband and keep their family together. But, this may be easier said than done in their small-minded town where few people know what 'transgender' means. Ready to become "Leslie," she has started taking hormones and hopes to have facial feminization and gender confirmation surgery in order to look like the woman she feels inside. However, with another baby on the way, Stacy and Leslie must figure out how to physically, emotionally and financially prepare for the realities of their new normal.
Beverly and AJ (Karen)
Beverly and AJ (Karen) have a typical American love story. They met in college, got married three years later, raised two kids together, and had a happy marriage of 22 years. When Beverly found women's clothing on AJ's side of the closet, she confronted him about it, but she was not prepared for the life-altering conversation that would follow. AJ, a former marine and motorcycle junkie, admitted to Beverly that the clothes were his, he is transgender, and he wants to leave her to become "Karen." Floored by the news, Beverly struggles with their new family dynamics. Not only is Beverly grappling with her husband's revelation, but one of their children is also transgender and in the process of transitioning. Beverly's world has quickly been turned upside down and with the emotional support of her youngest daughter, Haley she is trying to figure out what the future holds. With her divorce pending, Beverly searches to find her footing as she prepares to find a new place to live, manage her finances alone, and re-enter the dating world.
Cindy and Troy (Lucy)
Cindy first met Troy (Lucy) after getting out of a 30-year abusive marriage. She was hesitant to jump into any kind of relationship again, but Troy was everything she hoped for in a man, but didn't think was possible. He was kind, sensitive and funny, and they shared undeniable chemistry. Their relationship seemed perfect for ten years until out of the blue, Troy admitted to Cindy that he has always felt like a woman, and he hopes to begin transitioning. Cindy is devastated by the news and she is having a hard time coming to terms with how Troy's transition will affect their relationship. She has made it clear that she does not want to be in a same-sex union, but she is conflicted about the possibility of losing her partner. Troy hopes that they can find a compromise because he does not want to lose the love of his life, but he also doesn't want to continue living a lie.
