a Hikikomori is someone who secludes himself as a hermit, it's similar to NEETs, but hikkis can have jobs too.
Now that I think of it, yeah. NEET was more common thing to say until recent memory. most of the new generation of memesters use NEET.

According to him, the 1970s, which sounds about right. This was the era of Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets, Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers, Speed Racer and Captain Harlock/Albator (for the French proto anime-nerds).
There are actually quite a few older geeks who got into anime at a very young age with the above shows and others that made it to the West, and then again in the early 80s with Robotech and then Akira. (Which started manga getting popular over here too, along with Lone Wolf and Cub.)

My guess is a True and Honest Nippon word like "hikikimori" unintentionally slipped into Todd's vocabulary as the result of his mixing with the world of Lolicon.
(Not getting into the morality of Loli, I'll say that someone like Todd might see the Shotas as a way to get his underage fix without admitting to himself that he's a True and Honest ped. This is some very entertaining anger. Todd would definitely be the old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn if the internet wasn't a thing or if he wasn't a complete failure and had his own home.
