On the topic of "Gangnam Style"-- it definitely wasn't as inescapable as the "Macarena." It doesn't help that it came out over what would have been summer vacation in 2012 (6-7th grade) so perhaps if I was still in school at the time it would've been everywhere. Despite it rising to popularity before the end of the year, I can safely say that "Call Me Maybe" was extremely viral a the time.
The Internet being bigger helped too-- "Gangnam Style" wasn't just the main focus, it was also "Call Me Maybe", "Somebody That I Used To Know", etc. The Internet being so small definitely helped the Macarena grow to the heights it was at--and also because Internet memes didn't exactly exist yet.

"Call Me Maybe" was boosted by Justin Bieber via Twitter so that helped too

I still remember one of the local pop stations changing owners the year that "Macarena" came out and that station just running the song on loop for about a week while the new owners got their shit together.

I am certainly not longing for a comeback. I just at least want an entertaining song to come around that's just as bad as "Wiggle" or something ("Earth" by Lil Dicky is the only one I can think close of coming to it).
It's easy though: The 2016 election.
Yes! "Wiggle" is a God-awful song, but I'm glad it exists solely because Todd's review of it is one of his funniest. It gave him so much material to work with.
I liked the episode.
I agree with others that he should focus on one hit wonders and Trainwreckords
At least until pop music becomes more interesting.

Gotta agree on the Internet angle. Nowadays, every viral thing is only big until the next viral thing.

You hear about the Alex Jones trial?

Edit to not double: Turns out someone other than Todd made something like One Hit Wonderland back in 2021 .

I see the foundations there.

All I remember about Chamillionaire is how I had a buddy in high school that would drive into the parking lot every morning playing that corny song on full blast.

We called him a faggot.

Lol shut up Dany. You wish the farms cared enough about you to be a target. Todd has the worst taste in people.

I mean, we’re not even in the main parts of the site when it comes to Todd, and the worse this kid has got is 1. The YWNBAW crowd and 2. Contribution to Song vs. Song being brought down by constantly talking over Todd at every opportunity.

The Trainwreckords was...fine. Never been a MC fan so it didn't really grab me and the music was ass.

Because he can't shut up and I would make him his own thread in PG except no one gives a damn about him except in relation to being Todd's co-host, but he may well be teetering into cowdom, here's a dump of Dany's tweets celebrating the Kiwifarms drama. And talking about being trans, because that's all his personality is now.

Oh, and he has a Patreon too.

Anyone else feel like this episode was written really weird? It felt like Todd trying to come across as in the middle of liking or disliking trans people which is just bizarre considering his podcast co-host and that he’s openly an ally on social media.
He's fucking terrified. He pretty much admits towards the beginning that he'll get lynched if he doesn't say the right thing in the right way with the right tone of voice. He knows his own people are shitty cunts who'll turn on a dime if he so much as raises an eyebrow wrong and he's choosing to live in fear instead of taking the man the fuck up route.

Also his comment about he's a white guy(?) so as long as it looks like he's making an effort he should be fine is also an implicit admission that women get piled on way worse by the gender lunatics.

We see you Todd. We know that you know and now so does everyone else who's paying attention.

Todd calling himself white was so weird when he’s clearly south Asian lol
