The more I read about American politics, the more I see the term "Uncle Tom", "diversity", or "person of color" used around as a card to play. Tokenism is best described as "a perfunctory or symbolic effort to be inclusive to members of minority groups, especially by recruiting a small number of people from underrepresented groups in order to give the appearance of racial or sexual equality within a workforce." More or less, make the illusion that you're diverse.
Are people that are pushing diversity doing it so they could feel better about themselves? One example I would use is Trump or conservatives pointing out the likes of Candace Owens, Ben Carson or Kevin Martin to name a few. Would they be examples of tokenism in the Trump administration? Or even other politicians using race to increase their voting status? It annoys me that a minority status is merely used to say "I'm not racist".
Or even people that use their race or sexuality as a defining characteristic of their personality? What do you think of that?
