I actually really like stage 6's design.

Iwanaga Ariya appears to be based on or even touhou's equivalent of Iwanaga-hime, making her interesting because that character's actually got multiple connections throughout the series. She warned Mokou and the original disposers of the hourai elixir what exactly it is, and Akyuu is known to pray to her for a long life. I wonder if she's been cooking for a long time in the back of zun's head.

In those past depictions, she's been described as plain-looking, and i think it's interesting how Zun's done it here; underneath the skeletal, assymetrical wings and the mask is actually a quite ordinary-looking woman, no fancy hair colours or super notable facial details. If she hid her holy powers, you probably wouldn't even look at her twice. Gives me this funny "dark goddess who really just wants to finish up her job and clock out" sort of vibe, it's super cool. And the mask is a great addition to the long line of funny 2hu hats.

I suspect this is where claims that some or all of the demo youkai are AI creations come from. Personally, I find that unlikely - Nareko's explicit purpose was to keep things in the pyramid rather than leaving it, so I suspect that she's the one who's been why these AIs haven't been seen.

Though if she is meant to be an AI/LLM, that does explain why her sash-thing loops around and becomes her dress again. that's probably a reference to AI art getting confused about items that shouldn't be merged.

We officially have a conspiracy theorist 2hu. Ironically, it's in the story where 'the pyramids were built by aliens' is 100% true.

Her design seems to be based on the artwork of the birth of venus (seriously, her hair is nearly identical around her face), but she's apparently a clam youkai, maybe the same one described in chapter 26 of Sangetsusei ( https://mangadex.org/chapter/83247cd9-9ad2-4f6a-bf59-9b8dc8dc212a/20 ) It seems fitting that a youkai corrupted by unreliable AI has herself become a recreated artwork, another thing people ask AIs to do.

Something I've noticed is that if you run the game without Japanese locale the window pops up in English and the window name being TH19

in Japanese local the window name is just the name of Touhou 20

this game is fucking awesome man zun actually cooked, sad there's still some bugs from the demo though

Yeah, this one is no joke. We're not too far from CAVE type stuff where you'll be playing way more for score and using all your resources then for survival and no miss/no bomb. Shame the score bug is still here in light of that fact. Speaking of LoLK,
the fact that Stage 5's boss has callbacks to spell cards from Touhou 15 is pretty great, like her non-spells being a twist on Junko's Refinement of Earthly Impurity. Apparently her theme is also using bits from her theme that was made back when she appeared in Silent Sinner in Blue.

I kinda like these odd, stripped-down styles, and Toyohime makes for a nice juxtaposition to them.

And maybe he allowed Toyohime to show up because she's the less ferocious of the two. I'm kinda biased for her, because her B3 alt in Lost Word was one of my first pulls, and she carried me through a lot of content.
 
I'm really digging what I'm seeing here, Touhomies. It's like I can almost forgive ZUN for his pessimistic ramblings about AI and shit when all we need is a great game to revive our spirits.

Within the few hours I committed to playing it, I feel that the Normal mode (and I'm sure Hard and Lunatic is the same deal) are more difficult than the last few games. SA and UFO were roughly about at this level that 20 contains, which I find to be a good change of pace after a while. The mechanics exclusive to this one are damn well-executed that you need to plan a little bit to get around the stages; pick your stone, go after the wandering stones you could use, and make a combination that can shred everything!

Lore wise, I do like how the immortality god is depicted here. Compared to the rest of the newer cast being a sort of AI allegory, Ariya's omake especially is quite fascinating to read. To go over all of that text will be reserved for a different post but I am in agreement with those who think she's interesting. Once those lazy bums over at THCrap finish up translating the game, we'll see more to discuss.

The only good lunarians are Ringo and Seiran. Two nice girls living the good life on earth; no big plans, just selling dango and being happy.

I kinda love ZUN's use of conspiracy theories. It always tickled me how Clownpiece's spell card referenced the moon landing hoax conspiracy.

My favorite part about Clownpiece as a character is that the reason for her outfit is that Junko wanted to piss off the Lunarians, which makes it funny as hell.

And the fact that it's so literal kinda plays into Junko's whole purity thing too?
 
Man, judging by what I'm reading, I'm somewhat dreading playing 20. I'm not good at these games, and tend to play on easy, so the comparisons to LoLK and UFO -games I couldn't even beat on fucking easy- are slightly worrying.

I am, however, really glad others seem to be enjoying them. I just prefer the easier ones like PCB, IN, MoF, and SA.

I've finished several of the games and own some physically. People who only play the fighting ones worry me.
