The demo dropped yesterday. Anyone play it?

Graphics are a pleasant surprise. I have many issues with the Arems but the cast is a breath of fresh air. (Despite the fact you hear Max Mittleman as a random NPC mere seconds into the game. I don't hate him at all hes just in everything)

I miss the anime intros. Anyway I'm having fun.

I've been waiting for this game forever but I still haven't finished the Crossbell games, Cold Steel 4, and Trails Into Reverie, lol. NISA finally deciding to publish Zero and Azure after Cold Steel was finished really crossed me up. I hear the plot in Daybreak is kind of meh overall, but the characters are great. as long as it's better than CS 1 & 2, lol. the combat changes look cool.

I love CS 1 and 2. Unpopular opinion I know.

I see a lot of people say they liked CS 1 & 2, actually. I'm not going to claim to be the general case, I'm a huge sperglord and my opinions usually land far on the fringe. personally, the only thing that kept me going through those games was how much I liked TITS 1-3 and the fact that I was playing through them with a friend and live riffing. CS3, though, I did actually enjoy unironically, even if it's full of gay anime shit, like The Hot Spring Scene Where The Girls Compare Tit Sizes

The Mishalam stuff is hilarious. It was one of the last 3 games but there is a drinking contest that Sara participates in and its hysterical. I was dying.

The NPC's, from major to minor, are always a delight in Falcom games.

are you a fan of the other Trails games?
I played and enjoyed all of the Cold Steel ones. Noped out of trails in the sky because of the relationship with Estelle and Joshua, though I liked what I saw otherwise; Estelle is kinda relateable. Might play Azure and Zero.

I think the biggest hurdle for me is the significant changes to the battle system. The orbment stuff doesn't feel very intuitive, though I understand earlier games before Cold Steel were somewhat similar to this. I only played a little bit of Trails into Zero, so my experience is a bit limited. I like Lloyd and Randy a lot, so that's incentive to actually play Zero. I think a lot of people think Lloyd is boring, which would probably make what I said about Van to be somewhat odd.

Some guy got killed by a mafia type organization and Van "unleashed the nightmare". I didn't get up to Dingo becoming another grendel yet. The mafia bit was interesting, but idk how I feel about the AI. I already know Dingo's AI is the same as the doll from Reverie, but someone fucked with her programming. I didn't love her in Reverie either, tbh. Her backstory is interesting, but as a doll I found her generally annoying, except for her reaction to the failed prototypes. That part was sad in the way they meant it to.

I think Van has a connection to the D therefore G cult like Renne does? That wouldn't blow my socks off since I haven't played the game with Pater Mater, unfortunately. Renne's kind of interesting and has legit trauma, but I didn't experience it through gameplay.

Is there a good reason to give it another shot, knowing all that? Van wasn't terrible, but I just didn't love him and the lady who wanted his help. Probably because of how secretive he is, and that sort of thing doesn't really grab me. idk. I think someone says it gets good like, 70 hours in, and I don't think I'm willing to invest -that- much time into a game that I personally find to be middling. Does it really knock it out of the park at that point?

I was also going to play Song of the Ocean at some point, but I heard it wasn't very good.

ETA: I'm looking at some of the spoilery stuff for Trails in the Sky and holy shit I can understand why people think it's GOAT.

One of the things I've been interested in with the series is The Beyond.

is it the brother/sister thing? I'll spoil it for you slightly and say that it very quickly pulls out the "they're not actually blood related" trope, but where Joshua came from is actually the bombshell that ends the first game and one of the major plot points the second game hinges on. if you liked what you saw, I highly recommend you continue playing those; I liked all three games but 3 in particular was a hell of a capstone for me. as mentioned earlier, I'm still chugging through the Crossbell games, but I've heard they're even better than TITS, although most of the action happens in Azure. I just hit the second-to-last chapter in Zero, and it's not boring, but it's certainly less bombastic than Cold Steel with its magic and mecha and 10 minute anime speeches every boss fight

I really like Lloyd. he's kind of vanilla, but the writing is subtle enough that he has an actual personality instead of just being Anime Protagonist Template A. now Rean, on the other hand,

Yeah, I know he's adopted. Thank you for the info - I'll give Trails in the Sky another whirl, then.

Don't forget there are six other characters we will be seeing in Daybreak. So it won't just be limited to Van and Agnes.

I'm definitely eager for it. I've played everything from Sky to Reverie and I am really looking forward to a soft reset. I had my fun with Cold Steel and Reverie, but there were too many characters already in CS1. I also hope the new guy isn't another fucking Rean.

What I'm more worried about is localizer faggotry since I've heard NISA has gotten worse at it. Though no idea on how much damage it can actually do here. May wait on it a few days to get a clear idea if the translation job is good enough or I'm better off playing the fan translation.

The voice cast is overall good surprisingly. The new girl playing Agnes is decent. I feared she would be another damn Kira Buckland but this isn't the case.

Hey fellow Kiwis, I have a question. So I’ve been interested in trying this series for a while, even willing to start with Skys. But my worry comes from some people saying the localization gets bad and I guess “woke” when NISA comes into play. Is this true, like is it bad or is it easy to overlook and doesn’t really ruin or change the story to much from the original Japanese version.

I like everyone except Van's VA. He sounds like he's trying a bit too hard. Based Walter is right and he sounds like a bitch.

Personally I don't think its as bad as people say. Especially because of stuff like this

I like it purely because it gives her more personality than just "lol I destroy stupid men"

There are always going to be typos and shit and that's the unfortunate part. But there are also reasons to dislike NISA beyond this.

A friend of mine has gotten into this series. skipped the PSP games (dosent have a pc) and just play the games from the newer consoles. The series is massive and i would have to dedicate an entire year (if not more) just to play all these games.

Thats maybe a challenge i will accept but not today.
