have you ever actually spoken to a transgender person one on one or is this all conjecture? i'm reasonably certain none of you have any real awareness of the depth of the internal struggles trans people with chronic, acute GD are going through. Maybe all you say is true of fetishists and gender queers, but for people living with GD, it's not about colors, clothing, hair cuts or any of the other cultural crap we drape ourselves in an expression of that fantasy that that we're men or women. it's about our thoughts and the way we react to life's endless procession of situations; it's in how we move, pose, speak or touch ourselves and others. you have no idea what spiritual unburdening we experience the day we stop pretending and start living authentically.

Since you asked yes I have multiple times with few different individuals. Unfortunately what I have mostly seen is escapism. Trans that I have met and talked about issues around their gender seem hate themselves and/or gender norms and believe that they can escape those just by becoming another person by transitioning.

One example identifyed at time other gendered, she was in her mid twenties. There was a conversation about housework that went eventually to gender roles around those. That lead her talking about that she hated how her parents used to say stuff like “that isn’t for girls” and that’s why she can’t identify as a woman. Apart from that it was clear that she was angry with her parents about other issues too, some reasonable some not, and gotten stuck in teenage rebellion mind set. Alot wierd and/or dangerous stuff she did, stemmed from that including transitioning. How she went about things like name change just screamed teenage angst. What I could observe in the two months we were in same program she had low self esteem and was incredibly self centered but same time unable stand up for herself. To her credit she was looking for help seriously and working hard towards better mindset.

Other example is bit more extreme and I don’t want power level too much but one of childhood friends has actually transitioned from female to male. I have know her for long time and she wasn’t even a tomboy, not a girly girl eather but a pretty average if socially awkward girl from troubled family. She was also diagnosed and started therapy for with few serious mental conditions (think stuff like schizophrenia) little bit before trans stuff came in and she had moved in with a lesbian who had her own issues (although she was very nice person despite them). From all I could see was seriously troubled young lady that was looking anyway out her misery but those pains clearly stemmed from something else than her gender.

the only thing binary about human sexuality is what kind of gamete is produced by one's gonads. beyond that, there is too much variation, both physically and psychologically, to label everybody male or female. historically, cultures have recognized at least three sexes, male, female and intersex, and transgender people. The consensus among medical authorities today describe agender and bigender people as well.

I'm not even going to touch the linguistic slight of hand you clumsily tried to do with your "cultures" reference, because I don't need to. Let us cut right to the core of it: when you say, paraphrasing, that "there is too much variation (in genetic expression and mental condition) to label everyone as one of two sexes", you might as well be saying "there is too much variation in digit configuration to say that humans have five fingers on each hand." Or insert any number of other traits - two arms, two legs, no tail, no fur, etc. Yes, there are rare genetic defects that can cause aberrations in all of those statements, but they are exactly that... aberrations, cause by a defect. The same is true of the smattering of genetic conditions that get collectively lumped into "intersex". They are defects in the normal expression, they are not an alternate state of the human condition. Almost all of them come with other defects - mental retardation, physical handicaps, sterility, or some combination of those, normally. Or else they are so subtle that they don't even express, and people live their entire life without knowing they have them, unless they happen to get a genetic workup done.

Maybe off-topic, but it always gets my goat whenever cultural "third genders" get brought up by white western progressives as a good thing. Everyone acts like they're progressive, instead of a way of ostracizing anyone who doesn't conform to extremely strict cultural expectations about gender. Hijra, the Indian third gender, are often impoverished marginalized sex-workers facing who will most likely die from STD's and lack of medical access.
