I really don't get why this music artist got so much attention, their music was actually trash and not listened too by many people.

Same reason anyone pays attention to trans people. They're virtue signalling because it is (or was) en vogue to be pro-troon in the public eye. That kind of attention doesn't equate to the person in question being genuinely talented - look at Ellen Page's body of work in general.
