Travis King, the US Army private who fled to North Korea in July, has been charged by the Army with desertion, among other crimes, according to a charging document seen by CNN Thursday.

King, who was released from North Korean custody and returned to the United States last month, was charged with a series of other alleged offenses, including possession of child pornography, assaulting fellow soldiers, and disobeying a superior officer, according to the document. He was charged with eight counts total.

King, 23, was detained Wednesday at Ft. Bliss, Texas, according to a source familiar, who told CNN that he is being held in pre-trial detention.

In a statement shared with CNN, King’s mother, Claudine Gates, said she loves her son “unconditionally” and is “extremely concerned about his mental health.”

“As his mother, I ask that my son be afforded the presumption of innocence,” she said.

“A mother knows her son, and I believe something happened to mine while he was deployed. The Army promised to investigate what happened at Camp Humphries, and I await the results,” Gates added.

The Army confirmed Friday that King has been charged with violating the military’s judicial code, but declined to comment on the details of the case, citing his privacy.

King returned to US soil in late September after US officials said he “willfully and without authorization” crossed into North Korea in July.

Shortly before fleeing, King had been released from detention in South Korea related to an October 2022 incident in which he allegedly pushed and punched a victim in the face at a club in Seoul, according to court documents.

King was supposed to board a flight to Texas where he was to face disciplinary procedures, but when he was released at a security checkpoint at the airport in Seoul, King left and the next day joined a tour of Joint Security Area in the demilitarized zone, from which he fled across the demarcation line into North Korea.

I still find it amazing that North Korea let go of a prisoner so easily. If it was Trump, I'd imagine they'd have a phone call, but with this current administration; I was expecting Kim to hold it over Biden's head. And even if he got tired of the jogger, it's cheaper to just execute him.

I can't see holding an alleged pedophile as much of a PR win. I don't think there would be much domestic support to 'bring him home' after the crimes he's charged with are aired publicly. What're the Republicans gonna do, badger Biden to help secure an alleged pedophile's freedom?

but with this current administration; I was expecting Kim to hold it over Biden's head.
With everything going over his head it's probably hard to hold something there.
And even if he got tired of the jogger, it's cheaper to just execute him.
I doubt money factors into these kind of decisions. Maybe some kind of propaganda thing. "Best Korea is for Best Koreans, keep your degenerates."

Nigger was probably talking too much. You all know how niggers are. Gotta keep North Korea Best Korea

There are some historical examples of US soldiers walking into North Korea and straight up living there. The most famous example is James Dresnok who not only lived in North Korea after defecting but straight up married and obtained citizenship there
His story basically embodies the phrase "tis better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven".

Feel like they only released him when they realised they weren't going to get any leverage out of holding him. Dude's not a diplomat or a tourist, he's a military deserter who's running from assault and CP possession charges so its not like its going to spin up into a media frenzy, everyone involved is going to be quiet about it. From a poor family too (most likely) so its not like anyone's going to fork out much for him.

Biden's already leaning on the DoD to give this nigger a slap on the wrist.

If they do that the military is fucked. You are going to see a lot of people going AWOL when Biden sends troops to Israel if this guy gets the Britney Griner treatment.

Let's not ignore the elephant in the room that Dem politics have tried for years to gloss over, and largely succeeded in doing so:

Asians are, comparably, to us, incredibly racist.

They wouldn't want him even if he did have actual leverage because he's black.

Simple as.

they benefit from having this melanated individual in our territory as he's nothing but a waste of our time and resources. They'd be doing us a favor holding him over our head.
