Travis King, the US Army private who fled to North Korea in July, has been charged by the Army with desertion, among other crimes, according to a charging document seen by CNN Thursday.

King, who was released from North Korean custody and returned to the United States last month, was charged with a series of other alleged offenses, including possession of child pornography, assaulting fellow soldiers, and disobeying a superior officer, according to the document. He was charged with eight counts total.

King, 23, was detained Wednesday at Ft. Bliss, Texas, according to a source familiar, who told CNN that he is being held in pre-trial detention.

In a statement shared with CNN, King’s mother, Claudine Gates, said she loves her son “unconditionally” and is “extremely concerned about his mental health.”

“As his mother, I ask that my son be afforded the presumption of innocence,” she said.

“A mother knows her son, and I believe something happened to mine while he was deployed. The Army promised to investigate what happened at Camp Humphries, and I await the results,” Gates added.

The Army confirmed Friday that King has been charged with violating the military’s judicial code, but declined to comment on the details of the case, citing his privacy.

King returned to US soil in late September after US officials said he “willfully and without authorization” crossed into North Korea in July.

Shortly before fleeing, King had been released from detention in South Korea related to an October 2022 incident in which he allegedly pushed and punched a victim in the face at a club in Seoul, according to court documents.

King was supposed to board a flight to Texas where he was to face disciplinary procedures, but when he was released at a security checkpoint at the airport in Seoul, King left and the next day joined a tour of Joint Security Area in the demilitarized zone, from which he fled across the demarcation line into North Korea.

This story has been updated with additional reporting.

King intends to admit guilt to a total of five military offenses, including desertion and assaulting an officer. Nine other offenses, including possession of sexual images of a child, will be withdrawn and dismissed under the terms of the deal.
Are you fucking kidding me? I know that getting hit with a dishonorable discharge isn't exactly a great outcome in itself, but this nigga literally fled BECAUSE he was gooning to kids. Would a deal like this even be on the table if he hadn't fled? It's insane that he gets to dodge the registry just because he deserted.
IIRC, this guy crossed into NK because he was unescorted when he was supposed to head to the airport to go back home. If you are willing to risk potential execution or imprisonment in the DPRK over having to return home and face your crimes, I don't believe for a second that you are innocent.
They had this guy dead to rights on some really fucked up shit, but they are going to let him out to prey on American children because of the stunt he pulled.

This has all the hallmarks of those mass shooters whos psychological profiles that said "he's a nut, don't sell him a gun" were safely locked up in an infirmary file cabinet on some base somewhere and thus never showed up during civilian LEO agency background checks.

And despite the armed forces saying "yeah, we don't do that again, sorry"

They're doing it again.

And they're not sorry.

When he gets picked up diddling kids, and it turns out the Army had him by the balls and chose to just make him someone else's problem? They'll say the same thing.... Oops, what a tragic oversight, too bad there was absolutely no way to ever foresee or prevent it. Everyone drive home safely.

Read the story.

I obviously don't have all the information the prosecutors, defense, judge, and the commander who will need to sign off on the agreement have, because I don't agree with dropping the CP-related charges. Instead would have dropped the assault on an NCO and disobeying/disrespect to a commissioned officer charges. Frankly, those are throwaways to get someone on the more serious charges.

Am sure King would have been fried at a court-martial, no matter if it was before a judge alone, a panel of officers, or a mixed officer/enlisted panel. Matter of fact, the officer/enlisted panel would probably have been the toughest on him.

Now the only thing not known is the punishment and type of discharge. Originally would have said years in Leavenworth but now that is questionable, especially when he gets credit for time already served. He loses that stripe, of course. King should face either a Bad Conduct Discharge or a Dishonorable Discharge, plus that Federal conviction. No veterans' benefits except a ticket home. Rather more disappointing than expected.

Nevertheless, I foresee a Hobbesian future for King - nasty, short and brutal. Gonna be a lot of people in the 'hood who sure don't like CP people. King also seems to be an asshole anyway, doubt he's changed while in jail.

At least, for now, King will exit the Army with his life, unlike the last soldier to defect. Joseph White defected in August 1982. My flight and I were on duty that day, we got the word from the Koreans. Saw his pic in various NK propaganda materials, dude never looked happy. He was said to have drowned in August 1985. Maybe he did, maybe the NKs just killed him, not worth keeping around. Fuck White and fuck King, fully.

The outcome was talked about in US Politics General. He got 1 year confinement which was already served, so he walks free, and dishonorable discharge.

Why'd he do it? Muh mentals:

At the hearing, King told military judge Lt Col Rick Mathew that he had decided to flee the US Army because he was “dissatisfied” with work and had been thinking about leaving for about a year before he bolted into North Korea.

“I wanted to desert from the US Army and never come back,” King said, according to reporters inside the courtroom.

He also said he had been diagnosed with mental health conditions, though he maintained he was fit to stand trial and understood the charges.

King's lawyer, Franklin Rosenblatt, said in a statement that his client accepts full responsibility for what happened and added that King "faced significant challenges in his life, including a difficult upbringing, exposure to criminal environments, and struggles with mental health".

"All these factors have compounded the hardships he faced in the military," Mr Rosenblatt said.

...

In his statement, Mr Rosenblatt said he believes that despite his client walking away free on Friday, "the negative public perception" and the time King has spent in custody "represents an ongoing punishment that he will endure for the rest of his life".

Getting just 1 year of confinement for desertion is some shit. Even in the 00s when I was in you'd get more than that for just about anything. Let alone something actually serious like desertion.

That he gets to walk totally free because he had "mental hardships" in an otherwise milquetoast nothing enlistment as a junior enlisted is just a sign of the times.

Because of course he does. Dude deserted and got busted for CP, the only thing he deserves is a free one-way helicopter ride.
