If this was "supposed to happen" then the shooter wouldn't have been trying to use a Ruger 10-22 at 150 yards. It is not reliably accurate at that range. As in, no matter how good you are, you can not rely on the bullet to hit the target.

Last I heard the shooter had an AR-15, which fires a 5.56x45mm/.223 Remington, which is absolutely effective and lethal at 130yds. The round is still a .22 caliber, but .22 caliber does not mean .22 Long Rifle, which is what a Ruger 10/22 shoots.

I don't believe this myself as I think it's just a soy-brained Zoomer, but I could imagine the FBI/whoever picking up on some unhinged weirdo posting about killing Trump and deciding that they could let this person squeeze a few rounds off before ventilating him and then covering their own tracks/incompetence. If they used a trained company man, they'd have to pick someone who's okay getting killed on scene because an assassin that gets away looks way too suspicious.

You wouldn't even need everyone to be in on it, just enough people in the right place, say someone telling the SS counter-sniper to hold fire while someone else verifies the situation. If you really wanted to be conspiratorial you could probably claim that the FBI helped talk the kid into it. It's not as though they don't actually do this kind of thing all the time.

People like to believe in some sinister deep state conspiracies, but stupid shit and weird coincidences happen all the time. We'd like to think that the Secret Service would have been able to stop this easily, but how often does someone actually try to assassinate a political candidate?

I listened to the video. It was not .223. It may have been one of those pretend ARs that's chambered in .22lr instead of a Ruger, but it was not the sort of rifle that a serious person would use at that range.

edit: maybe the audio was poor, but I only heard the sound barrier crack when the counter-sniper fired back.

The shooter was nearly 150 yards away and the microphones were pointed toward Trump and away from the shooter. At that range what you're hearing is the supersonic cracks of the bullets traveling through the air and not the gunshots themselves, since those supersonic cracks are closer to the microphones than the rifle was. Sound can be funny that way, especially in a wide-open area and being recorded.
