TRUMPBUX warning for those that 'e-filed' through 3rd Party Sites

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.

Just a heads up; I got off the phone with a 3rd Party tax filing service (i.e. TurboTax, Taxslayer, HR Block, etc). If you used one of these services to file taxes, this does NOT count as registering direct deposit info with the IRS. The way they do it, is they open up a temporary account and the IRS deposits your return to that account. The service takes the 'service fee' from the amount and transfers the remainder to your personal bank account. Afterwards, the temporary account is closed and that is what the IRS is left with as far as a reference. Go to the newly opened portal here (the site is legit it's from the Treasury's twitter if you want to double-check) (the site wants your 2018 info) and submit your current financial info to the IRS if you don't want to wait until Sept to get a paper check.

I went to H&R Block and did it in person, would I still have to do this?

I just completed the forms. You'll get an email saying your return was rejected (because obviously you already filed it in 2018 ). They will still have your financial information in the system. That portal is intended for 'non-filers' but the info is still retained by the IRS. The second portal (which is currently greyed out) is here, you'll see it on the righthand side. Go to that portal when it opens up just to be extra sure.

I went to H&R Block and did it in person, would I still have to do this?
From my understanding, yes, because they also use temporary accounts to distribute funds. I'd fill out the initial form the Treasury put out, and then when the second portal opens up sometime next week, do that one too. It's very frustrating these tax agencies didn't give us a heads up because I'm sure a lot of people are sitting at home thinking "I'm good because I e-filed."

Is this the site they want people to use who plan to, or already filed their tax return? The only place I'm seeing that link being used is on the page dedicated to Non-Filers specifically. On another page it said they were working on their own dedicated portal to enter direct deposit info in the coming weeks.

The confirmation phone number to check your identity comes from the same number that Turbotax does.

So I used a free service (am vv poor). They don't take out any fees, so would they still use a temporary account? Regardless, I went ahead and filled this out. Thanks for the heads-up!

This probably only applies to the shadier companies that promise fast tax refunds from those stupid cardboard signs they stick in the dirt next to all the off-ramps and street corners. They're giving you a cash advance on your anticipated refund and putting their own bank account information on the IRS forms so they know they'll get first dibs at the actual refund money. Presumably they refund you the difference between what they loaned you and the actual amount, minus their various fees for this "service" of course.

If you used a site that required payment in advance for filing your taxes (even if it was just $20) or you used a legitimate free e-file provider, your bank account information goes on the filed forms because they've either already gotten their payment up front from you, or they're providing the service for free (to you) and don't derive their income from handling the funds themselves and slicing off a fee.

This may only apply if you had your refund "pre-given" to you by the company, or if you had fees deducted from it.
That very much may be true. I just figured we'd be better safe than sorry since the Treasury Dept didn't feel like addressing the myriad of ways we "e-file".

This is fake news. The site itself says you don't need to register if you've filed a return. Also, it says not to register if you make enough money to necessitate filing a tax return. Did you even read the instructions on the website OP?

Do NOT continue here if:

  • You receive Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or SSDI benefits. The IRS will automatically send you an Economic Impact Payment.
  • You have already filed a 2019 federal income tax return.
  • Your 2019 gross income exceeded $12,200 ($24,400 for a married couple) or other reasons require you to file a 2019 federal tax return.
  • You were married at the end of 2019 and are not submitting information here with your spouse.
  • You were not a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident in 2019.

As a NEET faggot, when I did the Stimulus sign up through Turbotax, the 1040 form they sent the IRS was marked as self-prepared.

So my TRUMPBUX are going direct to my bank account.

Mine says that as well. Wish I'd known about that before going through all this for apparently no reason... 🤬

EDIT: Also, why does OP keep saying "2018" instead of 2019?

Even if this is true, they will be forced to make a place for the millions of people who did their taxes 3rd party without realizing this to enter their direct deposit info.

Not doing that would be political suicide as it would mean basically everyone is getting a paper check.

SO I've been using H&R block for a few years(have a friend who works there so i get them done for free) SO i just called the support line to ask them about this. after 20 minutes of (very pleasant) hold music, a rep came on and said that a 2017/2018 return filed with them would mean that the IRS did have your direct deposit information for the purpose of receiving the check. SO thats a weight off my mind at least.
