As I said in his thread, the base point was sound. You definitely can criticize a film that advertised itself as nostalgia for gen X-ers but changes that history either to appeal to zoomers or because some of that culture is now wrongthink. But focusing on fucking 9/11 is retarded, and doubling down is worse. Ironically lack of emo is a far better argument, though that might also be localized to the USA.
Speaking of which, I wonder if the decision to place it in the naughties was made by Disney to test the water for nostalgia for the new generation.

That's the justification, but if that's so then it's overall a staggering amount of creative freedom for a director with mainly a short film under her belt, since, besides having a sino-american period film, THAT decade might as well be poison with the amount of baggage it has. Though judging from that box office we'll probably not see it in the close future.

I watched the movie on Easter Sunday but when I was very, very, drunk, so I can't remember everything.

I didn't realise it was set in 2002 until a calendar was shown. Only later I consciously saw the blocky phones and Tamagotchis, and near the end I got the whole boyband was clearly a nod to the era's popculture. So, now, I wonder: WHY was it set in 2002? It doesn't add anything to the film, you won't even notice it without looking.

My favourite scenes though were those in the temple and the final showdown. I remember I cried two times or so, and then had flashbacks because of the surreal backgrounds (which some compare to Steven Universe) when I woke up next morning with a hangover.

Because turning red is a movie that wants to pander to the tik tok generation aka the ones who were born long after ground zero stopped smoldering while also trying to be a trip down memory lane for those who were kids at that time and are now the 30 year old consoomers forever trapped in a "second childhood."


It wants to have its cake and eat it too, as the old saying goes.

I think this might have been the absolute wrong time to have a film with a moral of letting children have control of their bodies and action instead of their parents. At least Brave was smart enough to have the main character be 18 year old, as well as show the mother's point of view.

In general, it seems like a lot of modern films have an anti moral" of how selfishness is good, you don't need to work to improve yourself and that the real villain js society for not accepting you for how awesome you are.

The origin of the panda, if I'm remembering correctly, was a symbol of protective motherhood. They could have done waaaay more with that concept instead of the puberty thing. Kids are selfish little shits these days. We need an actual film that celebrates parents instead of IT'S NOT A PHASE MOM!!!1

It's an awful lot of editing work for not a lot of money. If anything, start a thread and heavily promote his Patreon in the OP.

Video creation is a rigged game. That faggot eyepatch wolf gets thousands for having an orgasm to Generic Anime of Spring 2022, our boy gets nothing and I always LAUGH OUT LOUD at his jokes. Laughter in these trying times... what could be more worthy of a contribution than that?

So I've been told "it's a kid's movie". Yeah, no, that shouldn't spare it from being criticized. It needs to be criticized because it's poor entertainment made by adults convincing other adults it's good and if you don't like it you're just morally wrong somehow. Hell, Mulan is set balls deep in China yet she's still sympathetic and universally more relatable despite being a family-friendly G.I Jane story; on the other hand, Mei is awkward and creepy and never gets any more likeable as the plot passes along like a turd. She's clearly supposed to be cute in a down-to-earth Ghibli girl way but she will never earn that heart in a movie where the main conflict is about not going to a fucking concert. I'd rather watch how her mother grew up and met her father, at least Ming sounded like she actually made some hard choices to get the family she wanted (she's weirdly traumatized about the whole deal and still fears her own mother who has a scar I assumed she inflicted while panda-raging, she got her man, then still decided to put the panda away?)

But Broccoli, ummm, Japanese shrines irl also have visitors????
Holy shit that is not even in the same league, that's pimped-out apples to watermelons and somebody else can sperg about that shit, I'm off to watch some Rocky movies.

Honest to God for everyone thinking this film is a metaphor for puberty or getting your period It’s not. I get it, ‘turning red’ she turns red when she goes through ‘strong emotions’ yadda yadda hah yeah I get it seems so obvious but really it isn’t. Menstruation pads are mentioned but once I repeat only once in a side gag early on in the film. It’s never mentioned again at any point during the films run. If you want to hate this film for not liking it’s weird plot, thinking the characters are lame and cringey and not liking the ‘Calarts’ (groan) bean look to the characters then fine. But all these accusations of it being a pedo film for ‘déviants and furries’ are insane especially coming from here.

This isn’t Twitter guys, it’s a friggin silly kids film, I thought we’d be smarter than this. It is not worth remotely getting this vitriolic about, we should be getting pissed at scummy movie businesses and lack of creativity in so many films but not this. It’s insane.

Wait I’m confused, why is the Chinese Descendant family in a Japanese Shinto temple? Torii gates are one of the few things that are authentically Japanese and not an evolution of Chinese culture?

Or is the family Japanese descendant that turn into Chinese animals?

Where does Nanking come into this childrens movie I need to know.
