Culture Twitter Shutdown Verified Account program bc the Alt-Right got in - Rest in Piss

Twitter has suspended its verified-profile scheme and described it as "broken", following complaints over the type of accounts being verified.

Typically, prominent people, including musicians, journalists and company executives, get a blue icon on their profile after proving their identity.

However, some far-right and white-supremacist accounts have now also been verified.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey said the scheme would now be "reconsidered".

In a statement, the company said: "Verification was meant to authenticate identity and voice, but it is interpreted as an endorsement or an indicator of importance.

"We recognise that we have created this confusion and need to resolve it."

The company said no further "general" accounts would be verified, while it worked on a fix.

Twitter has been making a series of changes to address abuse and harassment on the social network.

Last week, it published a rewritten version of its rules, which it said would make them easier to understand.

"You also may not affiliate with organizations that — whether by their own statements or activity both on and off the platform — use or promote violence against civilians to further their causes. "
Guessing this means that on the 18th, a bunch of alt righters are probably gonna be driven from twitter.

Well, unless they're just lying, they need to ban antifa too.

Soooooooo...they’re gonna ban government twitter accounts now?

One of the rules is that you may not wish harm on a person or group of people. So no more white genocide tweets? But does this also mean anyone hoping ISIS will be wiped out with anything other than hugs will be banned? What about discussions of the death penalty? I don't think they thought this through.

There isn't an :optimistic: big enough for you two.

You really think that, out of all far-left leaning organisations, Twitter is going to be the first one to apply their standards evenly and fairly?

:story:

Twitter verification is back up and apparently certain people like Richard Spencer and Laura Loomer have officially lost their verified status.

Lost cause status solidified. I don't know who Laura Loomer is, but I'm sure there are spergs who would impersonate Spencer. Now a blue checkmark officially means "We agree with this opinion," which will have some very fun ramifications in the future.

Laura Loomer was one of the examples I gave of the alt right loosing verification, but you probably still understand what this means anyways.

It's really meant that for a while. Twitter has been completely open about the fact that they were "de-badging" users for "abusive behavior" since 2015. De-badging people specifically for doing things that are likely to attract drama, parody accounts, and impersonation would obviously be idiotic if the badge was really about preventing account confusion, so yeah.

One case that really removes all plausible deniability is the one where they punished Milo by yanking his tickmark. Milo being Milo, every glossy gossip webshite and every other major newspaper spent a few days either triumphantly cackling or simply applauding. Some of the idiots were so delusional about the importance of Twitter (in media people, effectively a form of being full of themselves) that they referred to the act of de-badging as a "tool in the war against harrassment".

I'm not saying Milo isn't dumb and worthless, but thanks to the Milo drama pretty much every mainstream media outlet has publicly acknowledged that (1) checkmarks were never really just about identity, (2) everybody has always known that, (3) nobody gives a shit because you can't expect journalists to care about integrity.

TL;DR Twitter the Company is the same steaming pile of lies and double standards that Twitter the Ecosystem is. The lying media whores who keep enabling this fucking septic tank will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes.

(This should not be a partisan issue. No matter whether you love Trump or hate Trump, a working democracy needs a trusted fourth estate. We're rapidly nearing the point where restoring the public's faith in the media will have to involve cattle cars and razor wire, and I strongly believe that the corrosive, degrading fever swamp that is the Twitterati is one of the main problems.)
