My solution for using those Chinese cameras are to isolate them to a VLAN and block any outside access from that VLAN. I then interact with them by routing their rtsp stream to your surveillence software of choice. Those Amcrest and Hikvision are priced nicely and I can't see myself spending a ton more for some min 1080p IP cams.

Yeah and that's a fine solution if your setup allows for it. That's a bit harder to do if your trying to setup a system for a home with people that aren't that tech literate. I don't want to just set them up with potentially unsecure consumer crap but other routes are either too expensive or would require setup complexity that may be too much. Like do I really want to also setup a home VPN and have to show them how to use it on their phone?
