Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Fuck big open world games either the world is dead, you have a huge amount of point of interests that waste your time or even worse they copy paste the shit out of enemies / events just to fill the world and in the worst cases all 3. The two biggest sinners that made the genre even more popular are The Witcher 3 and Elden Ring. In both cases they casualized the mechanics, butchered the atmosphere and simplified the controls to the point that even the most retarded everyday faggot can play it without paying any attention.
My interest in Elden Ring has fizzled just because it's so looooong. And Souls games are already a marathon.

At time, most other first-person shooters had you largely crawling along claustrophobic corridors and absolutely brain-dead AI. Halo's large environments and fun vehicles were, for the average person playing it in 2001, mind-blowing...even more so if your previous game machine was a PS1.
I can agree on that. Ngl fighting for like an hour in literally the same corridors with the same enemies was tiresome. Just got to the space zombies. And a shotgun. I don't expect much variation after this. Good this game is about 8hrs long.

Yea Halo CE was pretty basic and boring, and lots of stuff was copy pasted for reasons I forget (time constraints?). The later games, 2, 3, ODST, and Reach are awesome tho so try those when you get through CE. I stopped doing my Legendary playthrough of it not because it was too hard, but I just got bored.

Also you will hate The Library when you get to it

I bought everything up to Halo 3 ODST. And I'll stop after that I think. Halo is an important part of the history so I want to experience it for myself. I'm optimistic. It has to be somewhat good if series is milked to this day. On the other hand I played all Assassin's Creeds up to Valhalla...

Halo 3 sucks.

The story makes little to no sense. It really feels like they had an idea for settings and then strung together plot points for how to get there. The characters are written extraordinarily poorly, like bad fanfic from Halo 2; Truth is one of the biggest examples. Relatable, interesting and somewhat cunning in Halo 2, turned into "bad guy madman". Rather than explore anything about the Covenant or their inner workings, especially interesting as they had just split at the start, he's made as a voice of a moustache twirling villain. Him being relegated to taunting on a TV camera in-game is fucking silly. 343 is likewise ruined with his ""twist"". What the fuck did they do with the Gravemind/flood? Keyes is so unlikeable it hurts, with some of the most stomach-churning, eye-rolling dialogue ever put in a mainstream game.

Then Bungie decided to kill off characters haphazardly - dev commentary on it shows that they finished the story, realized there was no impact without death and so just killed off a bunch of random characters. It sure feels like it.

Gameplay is likewise shit compared to 1 and 2. The typical gameplay loops from 1 and 2, juggling shield and flesh damage, is nearly completely gone. Mixtures of brutes, grunts, jackals and flying insects never live up to the original formula with elites. Completely subjective but it never gelled with me, especially anything with 3's Flood. Holy fuck, those flood forms that can form stationary spine turrets are some of the most annoying damage sponging enemies I've ever faced.

Graphics is good, especially for 2007. The old FOV took away from that, and made it feel like you were looking down a tube at all times. The music is probably one of the best aspects of the game, Marty delivered. Can't comment on multiplayer since I only played it with the MCC years later.

The best thing to come out of Halo 3 is probably ODST, and half that game worked purely because it had some soul.

I unironically miss the often overlooked sub-genre of "classic" third-person shooters. Think along the lines of Max Payne, Dead to Rights, or the old PS1 era Syphon Filter games.

They were often campy and ridiculous and for every good game like the first Max Payne or the 2005 Punisher game, you had garbage like 25 To Life or the 50 Cent games, but they had a simple charm to them in my humble opinion.

In other words, the third-person shooter as it existed before Gears of War came along and over-the-shoulder cover-based systems wound up as the norm for that genre.

I love this thread
I'm not opposed to challenging games, but the challenge in Elden Ring just seems to be ramping up the damage values in the mid-late game to comical degrees, to the point that armor is just a fashion statement. Fights start boiling down to just rolling through everything because the scaling is off the charts. Elden Ring is in an awkward spot of feeling like every other AAA open world action RPG on the market, just harder.

Playing original Halo on 4k TV my opinion is that resolution doesn't mean that much. It's 4:3. and it's blurry, but it's also absolutely playable.

I have like 3hrs under my belt and don't see that WOW factor of halo yet. It's a nice game and load times are quite impressive for an Xbox. Story-wise what I know for now I like Marathon's story better. Halo is like a short story and Marathon is a novel.

You don't see the WOW factor in Halo, you hear it instead.

I will always hate gears of war for what it did to third person shooters also no nigger the ps2 era syphon Filter games were the best

Would you elaborate on this?
Basically aside from the omega strain dark mirror and logan's shadow are different in that they refined the combat so no not only is aiming easier but the gameplay has been overhauled BUT also play the ps2 versions as they're the definitive versions of the games also is the ps1 trilogy any good

I didn't understand what you say, but thanks anyway. Use punctuation next time, please.

Wolfenstein The New Order is really fucking bad. It gets mentioned in the same breath as Doom 2016 and I have no idea why. Granted, it has a solid foundation and the shooting is decent but the execution is awful. The opening segment is really good but its all downhill from there with terrible unimaginative levels and inconsistent difficulty. The tonal shifts in the cutscenes are so ridiculous I think I got whiplash. I just want a fun shooter where I blast Nazis, I don't care about this jarhead retard's daydreams about suburbia or whatever.

Also the story and characters are mega cringe and gay.

Please tell me the sequels are better than this?

The New Order was a breath of fresh air back in 2014. It went back to having health pickups with no regenerating health, and allowing you to carry every gun you can get your hands on, after like 15 years of Halo-style limited guns & regenerating health. It also ran really well, and on id Tech 5, at a time when recent id Tech games were known for powering the likes of Brink, Doom 3, and Rage. Compare it to those, and yeah, it looks pretty good. But the actual game isn't very good, I didn't complete it, and it aged like milk.

Please tell me the sequels are better than this?
Lol, nope, you just played the best Nu-Wolfenstein has to offer. The Old Blood was immensely boring. Then they decided to go woke with Wolfenstein II, which apparently had a scene where a pregnant topless black lady shot a whole buncha nazis. And then nobody liked Youngblood, not even the wokies it's aimed at.

In the latest MATI, Jersh mentioned a video essay he liked about the predatory monetization in Diablo Immortal. I got about five minutes in before I realized I'm not too smart to be victimized by modern micro-transactions - I'm too stupid.

It seems like you'd want your loot boxes and microtransactions to be as easy to possible to tempt every dummy with a wallet, but all the mechanics and various currencies and systems are so baffling that I can imagine even degenerate gamblers throwing up their hands and saying "oh, the hell with it!" and either quitting or simply playing the game like Diablos of yore.

Is a slot machine with a thousand incomprehensible buttons really more enticing than one with a single big pull lever? Is gambling still alluring if the gambler doesn't even understand what he stands to win?

and allowing you to carry every gun you can get your hands on
Well you fucking need that in this game! I struggle to think of another game with worse bullet sponge enemies, which is not what you want from an FPS. I can understand if it was just the big robot things that took some taking down but there are regular soldier types that just absorb bullets like crazy. Why the fuck does a shotgunner take two full clips from a dual-wielded shotguns to bring down? And on harder difficulties they mow you down in seconds so its frustrating as hell. The last level is the wort offender because they throw tons of these enemies at you.
