Unpopular Opinions About Western Animation

Heres two of mine:

- Ren & Stimpy is fucking terrible and only try hard edge lords praise it. Also it was made by a weirdo fucking pedo. The fact that he was allowed to put that show on Nickelodeon during the day was fucked. Sorry if I sound like a pearl clutcher but I hate this show and I hate the creator.

- The most underrated modern Disney animated movie is Atlantis The Lost Empire.

Everyone hates John K. though.

Also no sure what to rate you because I agree with you on the first point, but not on the second.

Call me depraved, but I love all of John Kricfalusi's work. "Weekend Pussy Hunt", "The Goddamn George Liquor Program", "The Ren and Stimpy Show (of course)/Adult Party Cartoon," and "Cans Without Labels" are favorites of mine.

His animated music videos exposed me to artists like Björk and Tenacious D.

Though his blog makes me roll my eyes at times, it's not bad for giving tips to aspiring artists.

His style and sense of humor makes me big laugh.

But it doesn't excuse the crazy shit he's done. Obviously.

OK, you're depraved.

But seriously... Cans Without Labels? Really?

Do you like Cans ironically or onironically? If the former, fine; but if it's the latter, then I question your taste.

Yep.

Do you hate the OG Ren and Stimpy because of Kricfalusi's stink then?

Ironically, of course. I'm the same way with APC, tbh. Shit's bad but it's fun to watch.

I genuinely thought you were being unironic. Mea culpa.

The OG R&S, of course, is still a work of art.

Everyone hates him yet in this thread alone theres two people who love his work. I've seen people bend over backwards to defend him and his shitty shows. Ren & Stimpy has a fairly large fan base still, made up of half edge lords and half "omg I'm a 90s baby! Remember Rugrats?!" people. I also dont think everyone knows about John because who really researches 90s animators?

What is the best modern Disney film then? Frozen? Some Pixar rehashed shit? I wanna know.

Nah, you good.

What are your thoughts on the Games seasons?
For a long, long time they were unfairly denigrated in comparison to the original Spumco episodes simply because of the vitriol the John K. fanboys had for them. Now that his fanbase is essentially dead and he's been exposed as a pedophile, I think we can all realize that there's a lot to recommend about those episodes, and that there's quite a few stone-cold classics: "Stimpy's Cartoon Show," "Hermit Ren," "Hard Times for Haggis," "A Yard Too Far," etc.

If you want to feel okay about still liking classic R&S despite his involvement, remember, he was not the genius auteur he presented himself as, solely responsible for personally reinventing animation. Lots of other people did that shit as much as he tried to hog the credit for everything. Whenever he's been left to his own devices, he has produced nothing but shit. If anything, rather than an auteur, he was just a brat who could only get something done if someone had the ability to force him to rein in his bullshit. I.e. classic R&S is actually an example that executive meddling is not always a bad thing.

I definitely agree with everything you said, but I genuinely hate that show. I'm usually into the strange and grotesque but R&S makes me physically cringe. It's not funny, it's only shocking if you're a kid, so I dont see the appeal. As a kid I watched it confused as fuck, like what even is this. My opinion hasnt changed much but learning about John K made some things make sense.

I agree with that.

Stimpy's Cartoon Show was the only episode from season three I did not like (though ironically enough, I liked Reverend Jack Cheese because of how weird it was). One of my problems with the Games seasons was that they dedicated some episodes to just shitting on John K (even made Ren more like a John K. figure). The joke already have flown over most people's heads who doesn't follow the drama. Why bring it up?

If you know anything about how he treated the people he worked with, especially after he was fired, you can guess why. Lot of frustration there.

I played the demo of Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom recently. It's critically acclaimed. Hand-drawn/animated sprites, really impressive stuff.

And as a mega-fan of Wonder Boy in Monster World... I couldn't help being disappointed. Gone is the clean, cartoonish anime style of the original games, replaced with a goofy Western art style/sensibility, and I kind of hate it. It's not that it isn't good quality, but it's not what I feel a spiritual successor to the Wonder Boy/Monster World series deserves. (Which is odd because I LOVE the art style in the recent, official Dotemu Dragon's Trap remake, and that's definitely Western.) Even the animation kind of bothers me, as good as it looks.

I was going to say that perhaps a decade or more of Flash games has ruined this type of "high quality sprites" game for me, but that's not what it is. Streets of Rage 4 is clearly done in a Western style and it's incredible. Anyway, I'll probably buy it and love it anyway. Maybe I'll grow attached to the soundtrack over time, too *sigh*

Hey Arnold had some of the most varied and relatable characters for a kids cartoon. A parentless white kid raised by grandparents in a boarding house, a smart black kid with a stable (but flawed) family, an anti-social (and not attractive by western animation conventions) tomboy white girl raised in a really dysfunctional household who flits between being a friend/enemy as a result of her inability to express her romantic feelings, etc. Instead of slamming viewers over the head with social justice messages (like in Steven Universe) Hey Arnold's diverse cast of characters never felt politicized or forced. I'm actually somewhat surprised that it hasn't received a reappraisal by SJW types given all this—it seems exactly like the type of animation they would adopt as a model.

Hey Arnold is like lightning in a bottle. It's a slice-of-life cartoon that doesn't feel preachy and has a good mix of humorous and emotional moments that aren't (usually) cringey. The soundtrack is fantastic as well.

I would hate to see SJWs tackle it. No doubt they'd try to make Arnold similar to modern day Lisa Simpson.
