Unpopular Opinions About Western Animation

Normally I'd agree, but I see it used almost exclusively as a shortcut. And real artists are generally willing to put forth that extra work.

I agree, but you also have to remember that in today's climate, the push by Big Nickelodeon™ and others to get things done in a certain time or else ya fired is big reason why people opt for flash.

Despite what the "critics" say, mainstream animation has proven itself unable to tell adult stories. If you're wowed by a Pixar movie aimed at literal children with messaging like "be nice to people who are different from you" and "let's share and all be friends" then you have the mental age of a toddler.

Sad but true. Flash simply made it a lot more convenient over hand-drawing those frames.

Using this JustARobot video, I want to mention something that had always bugged me and he puts it really well. Why cartoons of the Golden Age have a tendency to had really REALLY awful moral implications? They almost all have some kind of really shitty moral: making horrible and awful things are totally ok if you are forgiven by the protagonist, or he/she is ok with that, it's ok to manipulate emotionally people or being selfish, etc. Is just shitty writting or you think that there is more to it?

Short answer: young women in the industry want to write "powerful" female characters, but have no idea how to do that because they've spent their whole lives being insecure shut-ins with little knowledge on how healthy-minded strong individuals act (hint: not through manipulation).

Yes and no. I think some of it is probably just good ol' coincidence, some of it is just how they're written (like Bubblegum being what she is, she just has implications), and some of it is bad/confused writing.

IIRC Mabel Pines and Princess Bubblegum were created by men.

I hate anyone who defends Flash animation for television.

Flash animation barely works as a thing to use on the internet anymore, either. If technology in general is always advancing every 2 to 5 years, then it's clear there's no point to stick with just what's cheap!

I agree wholeheartedly - taking the cheap way out (hence most stuff from people coming out of CalArts), besides a noticable lack of action/drama/adventure fare on TV (unless you go on streaming for those kinds of shows!) is a core reason Western fare is losing big time in comparison to anime, besides watching YouTube/Twitch and whatnot.

Like, it's one thing for YouTube "kids" channels or Newgrounds artists to be lazy as shit (the former just pumps this shit out for the views, the latter are just doing things by themselves, so they can't make everything look the best). But TV animation using Flash, not even ToonBoom, to animate looks absolutely horrible. Always has, always will.

Hence why we must always look down on Canada for using it in general too much, for a major example (but don't ever look past the truth that MURRICA is most definitely on the hook for this BS as well, regardless.).

Everyone is, when you think of it. South Korea, China and India are just as big offenders as Canada is. Not discrediting Canada, as we did popularize that shit, just stating that it's an equal opportunity blame.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm doesn't live up to the hype.

When I was a kid I loved that movie and rewatched it several times. As an adult I was scratching my head at what the appeal was. I think maybe because it was a kid's movie that depicted actual murder and showed Batman knocking Joker's teeth out (with blood). Other than that I felt Kevin Conroy's delivery felt flat at some portions.

When it comes to flash animation on TV, Motorcity should be the norm instead of the exception. That show actually looks good and doesn't have that signature sterile, robotic feel to it most associate with Flash. Too bad Flash is just used to make cheap looking, time-saving tweeny garbage for the most part.
