Unraid servers.

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.

I have my own homeserver that I use for Plex, I am just curious if any other kiwis are running a server and what else can I use it for? I'm looking for app suggestions and what you use yours for.

Jellyfin instead of plex, vaultwarden, nextcloud, frigate, homeassistant, sonarr, radarr, sabnzbd, and qbitorrent.
+1 to Jellyfin over Plex. I had Plex on my old server but moved to Jellyfin recently. I'm glad I never bothered paying for Plex as Jellyfin has done everything it does that I need so far.

I run Sonarr/Prowlarr/SABnzbd/qBittorrent/Zabbix also. TrueNAS for file server. I've enjoyed learning to use Proxmox.

I migrated away from TrueNAS to ZFS on baremetal Debian. Run everything under docker. Have ran ZFS on a handful of different distributions for the last decadish and everything transfers nicely. Run the system from redundant SSDs. Backup all important docker data to the pool along with backing up the docker-compose.yaml's. Makes everything move extremely well and has great cross compatibility with various distros.

Things just work™

There's a Homelab & Selfhosting thread here for more ideas.

Definitely second the Proxmox suggestions. Really convenient using LXC.
If you're not too familiar with docker or containers in general, they have Turnkey templates for a lot of the more popular applications available by default.
Also consider running your own DNS. Makes it so you have easy to remember URLs when you have 20 different containerized apps, each with a different IP address.

I don't have a server, but my advice for making anything is make something that is useful to you if you can.

It can be something as simple as a place to store files.

Make your own version of Cloud infrastructure. Use it as something that can run programs easily from a phone or a windows laptop via cloud computing.

Make your own website to do something you might like. I know of a guy that programmed a server that would read his Spotify playlist and then Youtube Dl it.
This could also be stuff like a calculator for equations. So many people make websites that exist solely to make converting measurements between measurement systems easier.

Basically anything that would be useful for yourself and maybe other people that would be nice to be extremely easy to use.

Docker: SABnzbd/Radarr/Sonarr/Lidarr/Readarr/Jellyfin/Teamspeak Server
VMs: Pi Hole/Torrent box/Game server of the month

Also have a few DS invites if anyone wants.
