Unschooling - We don't need no education.

Why would anyone trust someone who claims to be a fucking mermaid with the screen name "Dream Mountain Dweller" on an internet forum with advice on how to raise their children?
:autism:

I'm going to like this thread, especially the parents that boast knowing more than anyone else and their stories of success by being a cashier on their local walmarts.

She's failed them ever since they left the womb.

So I just read this article on why a parent chooses to 'unschool'
https://zenhabits.net/unschool/

The list of reasons are....fucking stupid. I can only speak for the UK education system because that's what I'm trained in but the gist is this parent believes public education holds back children, not letting them learn at their own pace or challenge themselves. It claims that it puts a divide between 'learning' and 'real life' and that children should learn from everything around them rather than having knowledge passed down to them. All of this is complete bullshit, one of the first things trainee teachers learn is how to spot a childs preferences and likes and to try and find ways to incorporate that into their learning, the idea that every teacher has a set to-do list to follow and nothing can change it whether the child is excelling or not is....gah.
Also I love this line;

So because you can google something your children are learning better than they would in a classroom where that question could be opened up as a discussion, allowing the opinions and ideas of other children to be considered and giving the child the chance to learn how to seek peer knowledge and share thoughts and opinions. Nah, I'm totally with you, who needs that when you have wiki-fucking-pedia.
But see, what she doesn't realize is that by not sending them to school she'll not only have them be worse off when it comes to "stretching their mindset". Learning ties in greatly with real life as it allows the child to be social and learn valuable skills for later on in their life. And not only that, but by not sending them to get an actual education, you prevent them from either getting a proper job (as, at least in Canada, you need an education to even get an entry level job). And by extension, them from having actual lives or leaving the house. And if that was her intent the whole time...

I'd call her a fucking idiot, but even that's too nice an insult to use.

I'm glad my country has completely banned homeschooling and considers child abuse to keep kids out of school
Any civilized country in the world should do the same. There's absolutely NO valid reason to homeschool (let alone un-fucking-school) a child, unless he suffers from some sort disease that requires strict supervision 24/7 or if he's mentally impaired and there's no special education available in the zone.

This fucking blog lol

  • Because of the nature of this blog, I find it important to state clearly that child-hate and adultism will not be tolerated. Children are people too, and deserve to be treated with the same respect that every other person, regardless of age, size, ability, or anything else, deserves to be treated with. I recognize that children are an oppressed class, and strive to both not perpetuate that oppression, and actively work against it. Thus I will not allow this blog to be a platform for words and views that perpetuate the oppression of children.
It looks like soon Australia won't have people who know how to read at this rate lol.

Apparently there was a TV Show that talked about unschooling but I cannot seem to find it.

I don't mind homeschooling at all, i think our education system have a lot of flaws which need to be addressed.
But only if you are not a sperg. And know how to teach things.
I too believe that should be freedom for people to learn in a different system than Public Schooling but what these unschoolers do they tell the Government that they are gonna homeschool their kids but instead of making them sit at the kicten table and read their textbooks and do the homework that is in the textbooks they just let their kids stay up til 3 AM playing Minecraft. That's plain old fucking irresponsible and terrible parenting in addition to lying to the Federal Government that they're gonna teach their kids.

It's stupid decisions like this that makes me wonder why some parents are even allowed to have kids, much less be allowed to take care of them. It makes me wonder what's going through their minds when they think to themselves "I'm going to homeschool my kid, even though I have no experience in teaching!"

Of course the person who runs that blog has a Patreon. Of course.

The thing that gets me about many of these unschooling parents is they basically foam at the mouth with fuck da government!
But many of them are on welfare.
I have no issues with people getting help and social programs.
But these people are basically getting paid to abuse their children.
When I was first researching this topic more than one unschooling group/forum had threads dedicated to advice on how to outfox CPS.

So the AnCap leader (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((David D. Friedman)))))))))))))))))))))))))))) wrote about unschooling and how it is superior to teaching your kids anything with an example of a kid saying a Dinosaur's name at a natural history museum.
http://www.daviddfriedman.com/Machinery_3d_Edition/Unschooling.htm

Museum of Natural History volunteer to almost two year old in his mother’s arms, pointing at an arrangement of two dinosaur skeletons: “What do you think that is?”

“Albertosaurus eat Iambeosaurus.”

True story. He was still having trouble with l’s at the time.

Also has spoken about it.

Children are not an oppressed class. And even if they are you can't "actively work against their oppression" while denying them a basic education.

Apparently there was a TV Show that talked about unschooling but I cannot seem to find it.

I once saw this episode of wife swap where a woman's idea of teaching her children was taking them to the fair and showing them the rides. I always thought that was bullshit but these people actually exist.

In Australia at least, home schooling often happens simply because people who live in remote areas don't have physical access to a school. However, while the children are still very dependant on their parents for their education, there is a considerable degree of organisation, much of it government planned, run, and subsidised. And from what I understand, it's pretty common for these kids to be sent to boarding school in their late teens as well, both to give them an idea of socialising, and also to give them at least a few years free of chasing cattle and in many Aboriginal communities, a few years away from violence and crushing poverty.

It sounds weird, but this unschooling keeps putting me in mind of Scientology, even though the kids are often kept under such control and regulated to the point where even North Koreans would think it too harsh. I think it's another example of a social horseshoe; you've the unschoolers on one end and the Scientologists on the other, and they're so similar in their insanity that the line is curving in on itself.

There's a report that I read years ago that discussed a woman whose baby had drunk some kind of poisonous household fluid. I can't find the thing now, but from what I remember this raging fucktard who should never have been allowed to breed in the first place woman was a Scientologist and believed that all children were born knowing everything from their first life, and didn't need supervision or child proofing. So the woman had left the poison out in the open where the toddler was crawling about because she thought that the toddler would know not to drink the fluid. The woman was quoted as saying something along the lines of not being able to understand why her toddler would want to do something so dangerous when it should have known otherwise.

Think an unschooler would see drinking toxic fluid as one of those great life experiences?

I've no doubt.

Unschooling is yet another show of contempt from willingly ignorant clowns who think that science is just people in white coats in a white room causing cancer in rats, or that roads and buildings appear as if by magic... I don't get unschooling. I really don't. I fucking hated school for good fucking reasons, but it was one of those things that had to be done. Where do the unschoolers think that engineers in their infinite diversity come from? Do they really think that showing their children pictures of a cow will teach them all they need to know where their food comes from? How the hell do they expect their kids to be doctors, accountants, lawyers, builders, farmers, mechanics, graphic designers, or even build those computers that unschoolers are using so happily?

These people are essentially recreating the conditions that Western children were raised in less than a hundred years ago. But the arguably worst thing is that even though so many men and women back then couldn't read or write, they were effectively working from the time they could walk, and never stopped working until something stopped them. In impoverished countries all around the world today, that's still happening. And the results of this are often... unpleasant.

But unschoolers in the Western world are raising children who are both uneducated and used to being fed and provided for by others. :powerlevel: My career to date has been in the infrastructure and primary industry sciences. Both sides of my family are lousy with farmers, soldiers and engineers. I've met people who've done double master's degrees in needful subjects that still have no fucking idea where their water comes from. Hint: it's not the fucking tap. So when you combine children with no education at all. in a society where even the most basic of things is taken for granted to the extent that the majority of the population has no idea how pretty much everything is made, where they can exploit and cheat a system that can't even properly support children and people from genuinely deprived backgrounds.

The fuck is this shit?

Oh, this reminded me immediately of a lolcow I came across last week, and the so-called "school" her kid attends. This movement (besides the Christian fundamentalists who feel all their kid needs to know is the Bible) espouses exactly what that clubhouse does on education: that students should choose their own activities and topics of studies. If they opt not to learn how to read or do basic arithmetic, oh well, we can't impose our will on them.

How does a person get to the point they feel standard education on basic subjects is immoral? Yeah, the school system in any country has problems and it's great to think of a child's welfare and autonomy. But, how does someone wholeheartedly come to the decision the only honorable recourse is no formal education at all? Even Chris Chan wouldn't endorse this! He would actually be a better parent than all of these people. Mindblowing.

Here's the irony of these kinds of methods of teaching kids.

Basically, they teach kids how to find their own answers to their own questions with the resources available to them. Which is Google, and their parents.

This means that theoretically, since they're in complete control of what they learn, they can choose to learn a lot about subjects, or they can learn only a small amount.

The point that I want to make is that, since they have access to the Internet and are able to learn through it, chances are that eventually they will search for the teaching method used by their parents, and they'll stumble upon this site. When they do, they might not be able to understand the discussion we're having right now.

Yeah, they'll probably be able to read the text, but they won't be able to understand it, and their parents won't enjoy this thread being brought to their attention.

I don't know where I was going with this. There's not much you can say about this other than that it's stupid and damaging for kids.

This actually raises a pretty awesome point; what do these unschooling nitwits do when their child asks "Mommy, how do people learn at public school?" and while the mother tries her hardest to convince the kid it's awful (saw one mum use the description "they're really strict and you can't have days off whenever you want", very unbiased there) the kid has been raised to search for answers on google if they're not satisfied with mums answer. So the kid googles. And likes what they see. And demands to be have a chance to go to proper school.
Can you imagine the chimpout when mummy's special snowflake decides they want a normal education? :story:
