Updating your PC

Does this actually work? I'm building a PC myself and I already have a case, but if this is true, is it possible to build one without a case? I'm just curious because I'm a beginner myself.
People run PCs outside of a case all the time, usually to check something. However, cardboard is terribly flimsy and almost certainly has terrible airflow, so it's very obviously not recommended any more than using wood is recommended.

New question.

Any of you ever change the power button on a PC? Not the switch on the power supply, but the actual button that is wired to the motherboard? I was reading a little bit about it while at work today but I was wondering if anyone has experience doing it and if it's something an amateur could do without too much trouble.

The actual wiring is super easy. Just make sure it's the right kind of switch, since a pc power button isn't just a simple on/off, it's a momentary switch. Hardest part is probably mounting it in a way that works for you. Might require some case modding (where the real fun is).

You can start the computer with a screwdriver or anything that can close the circuit between the prongs the connector sits on, so the mechanism/action is very simple. Close the circuit for 3-5 seconds and it shuts off just like if you hold the button.

Alternatively you can get rid of the power button, strip the ends of the cables coming from the motherboard, snake the cables out of the case and start it like if you were hot wiring a car.
