I'm worried I haven't been doing it right :(

You missed out a ton of options...

FYI, stroking the underbelly of a cat is roulette. Some cats like it, some hate it, but for most they'll decide to alternate between the two when you least expect.

Depends on the cat, but the place I've found is contested between cats is the belly. Some like it, others hate it. But really, almost any of the places you described should be fine.

Wherever they like. I usually rub their face, head, sides, back and belly. And pick them up to snuggle and hug them. Mine are okay with anything, even squeezing their paws in a handshake. They've been snuggled like crazy their whole lives so they're pretty mellow. As long as you start cuddling then early they're pretty tolerant and will even try to jump into your lap or arms to be snuggled when they want attention. But I do think individual cats have preferences. People keep saying most kitties don't like belly rubs so some of them must be like that.

I don't have a cat, but I've pet a few of my friends cats. They're all different in ways they like to be petted.
Like one of my friends has 2 cats. One doesn't give a shit where you touch it while the other one will brutally murder you if you go near it's head.

So in the end it depends on your Neko.

Where ever they like, mine likes his tail pulled gently and behind the ears. I hate petting behind the ears because he gets all happy drools and then shakes his head throwing cat spit all over.

Mine does that too. He's really sweet but I sometimes think he's special needs.
