UN US drops a MOAB on ISIS tunnel network - We gon die

Didn't you know? A MOAB is way more destructive than a nuke!

View attachment 205043

I read somewhere that it's about 0.07% as powerful as the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Where is this retard getting his information from?

Also, a lot of people are hand-wringing about this ("DON'T YOU SEE, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THE TERRORISTS WANT!!"), but in reality the bomb was dropped on an ISIS cave/tunnel complex in a very isolated region. There is likely no collateral damage or civilian deaths.

This is good. Dead terrorists is good. Sorry, but you cannot negotiate with the likes of ISIS. I consider myself to be a very idealistic person who thinks nonviolence always beats out violence, but not in this case. ISIS members are mass murdering, raping, horrible terrorists and torturers. These are people that burn hostages alive in cages, and laugh and pray to their torment. And some people seriously think that we can just talk them out of being evil.

The lethality of such weapons also varies greatly with the landscape. In a perfectly flat area, the damage will be bigger than when the blastwave is obstructed by hills and mountains, obviously. That's also the reason why Fatman did less damage around Nagasaki than Littleboy did around Hiroshima.
Seeing how the area that it was used in is a very mountainous region, I guess the risk of accidently blowing up someone in the neighborhood was comparatively low.

And seeing how many wedding parties, schools, BBQ get-togethers and whatnot have gotten bombed under Obama, I severely doubt the use of this MOAB was that irresponsible in any way in comparison.

The MOAB doesn't need to penetrate to kill, especially if it detonated on top of the tunnels. The shockwave will collapse tunnels and potentially liquefy people under the blast point. The explosion will also kill by sucking air out of the network, suffocating those inside if they're lucky or physically ripping their lungs out their mouth if they aren't.

And once again twitter is full of people screeching that Trump just spent 300 million dollars that could have been spent on gibsmedats, when in reality we started researching this weapon in 2003 and Bush/Obama or congress could have killed it at any time since then.

Also twitter is full of idiots saying the "Afganistan" hashtag is a misspelling of "Afghanistan", not realizing that that's actually a common spelling in a lot of the world or that by retweeting it their causing it to become more popular.

We built them in 2004, and we've only built 15 total. While using it in this scenario makes sense it's still acceptable to wonder why we never used them before this.

The answer is because the MOAB really never needed to be built and the scenario where the bomb is actually useful is in a low threat environment against a lot of soft-medium targets.

Actually I can see why they used the MOAB and not the Bunker Buster.

For the Bunker Buster to work properly you need to know where the tunnels are. If you just know "tunnels are there somewhere" the shockwave may just be a better option. It will not hit that hard but it will surely hit.

If anything, Trump reduced the cost of maintenance, cause the US now only has to pay for 14 bombs lying around.

Apparently, that video was taken in Yemen... but it is one mighty fine explosion I tell you what.

Interesting fact: by throwing thermobaric weapons at Islamists, the US is following in Soviet footsteps.

Back in the 1980s, the Soviet Armed Forces field tested RPO-A "Shmel" thermobaric rocket launchers and TOS-1 "Buratino" MRL systems in Afghanistan, with the Mujahideen being unwilling test subjects. Soviet troops cleared tunnels like the ones used by ISIS today by firing a thermobaric rocket into the entrance - everyone inside were usually ripped to shreds by the shockwave.
Going in afterwards was not for the faint hearted, though.

Should've been a nuke.

No, while I appreciate this was a shitpost nobody should joke about Nuclear weapons, when they become a job they become less scary Nuclear weapons are one of the few things I am fucking terrified off anyone who says they don't find them terrifying is either a moron or uneducated... probably both.

This attack is more bark than bite. MOABs are designed to level the ground, and they aren't any good at penetrating targets and damaging things in the ground. Hell, the tunnels could be undamaged if they were deep enough. If they were aiming to do serious damage they'd have used a penetrating bomb such as a bunker buster. This is just putting on a show to make them shit their turbans.

They are the ultimate fuck you, they were like most FAB's designed for a different war where we were supposed to be engaging on the fields of Europe where bunkers are for high-value assets, not every Tom, Dick and Abdulla.

This getting used like it was is a show of force, and a bloody effective one this is America saying -

You might kill people you might cause untold suffering to people for Pennies on the Dollar but we have the fucking dollar and we put it and many more to good use,

Sincerely yours the people who will be fucking your shit up.

PS we have more.

FAB's were designed to eliminate large numbers of infantry in open fields, even hiding in trenches they work by literally exploding the fucking air - they fucking move the atmosphere when they are used the last place I'd want to be when one of these fuckers get used is in a tunnel system to be perfectly frank the people in the tunnel system possibly had it harder than anyone in the open, they as you quite rightly said work by fucking pulping anything holding anything under pressure -

Imagine the scene, you're sitting in your nice cave enjoying a glass of tea after a hard day of being a 14th century throwback and throwing gay people off of roof's thinking, Gosh Darnint isn't god wonderful he gave me this book to live by that I can't read, and this lovely cave to keep the meanies who don't like me from killing me from half the world away this is a good life - the next thing you know your blind because your eyeballs have just burst, you're deff and your lungs are a bloody pulp that's pulsating in a vain attempt to pull in air that doesn't happen to be there, you spend the last few seconds of your life in literally a blind panic I'd say that's a sad fate for anybody to suffer but I couldn't wish it on a more deserving bunch of arseholes.

I read somewhere that it's about 0.07% as powerful as the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Where is this exceptional individual getting his information from?

That's about right, FAB's like MOAB's are the largest conventional weapon in any fucking arsenal the best way I have heard it described by a general was "All the fun of nukes with non of the mess", i.e. amazingly destructive with no long lasting effects or need for cleanup.

And that my fellow Kiwi's is why you don't piss America off - You see America is a big place with lots of nice caring people but these people are able to be so nice and caring because they can not only give you one hell of a Screw you message, they have the ability to not only say fuck you they can push your shit back in several times over.

so it's like a human version of the beginning of watership down?

side note, this is one of the few things trump has done that I'm on board with.
