My guess is because Kickstarter tagged ValiDate as "Projects We Love".

With his unique eyes and cocky pose, Malik's icon has the most character out of all of them. Like, you can tell something about his personality right off the bat. And that's why I like it most and would genuinely consider using it.

I'd like the last two as well, but they have such a derpy look with the way their mouths are hanging open and with them slouching forward that I'm expecting drool to start dribbling from their mouths. That and they should've used a different shade of grey for Keaton's piercings or something, as well as different colors/shades or smaller circles for his cheek blushes. If he's got bags under his eyes that's fine, and I understand he's got a lot of piercings, but as is his face looks really dirty.

Also, second-to-last bitch is an absolute cunt, and the mere sight of her makes me remember her route and want to chuck her out a window. Which is frustrating because I admittedly like her design the most.

WTF is with the giant, black eye and tiny white pupil? It's like what an AI would draw. Or someone who's never looked directly in the eyes of another living being.
After reading this comment and looking back at the icons, they became much more entertaining. Especially considering their "pupils" are halfway out the eye.
I'm pretty sure the white is eye-shine, and the black is the iris and/ or pupil.

Edit: Is Biggie Small's right (our right) earring in his cheek?

Edit 2: Everyone except Ahrihi gets blush.

Could be me but I think plenty of people just want another trashfire to mock relentlessly. Can't blame them, the developers of this game are much more entertaining than Neil Druckmann is.

The ValiDate devs are allegedly deleting Kickstarter comments that call them out.

Edit: It's probably Kickstarter deleting comments because they were """hateful""" OR it's the devs reporting the comments to Kickstarter.

The drama around the game is more entertaining than the game itself. It doesn't help that the developers are actively engaging with their trolls. It's like they never learned one of the most well known rules on the internet: don't feed the trolls. Some of the negative comments are extremely baity and yet as per these kinds of groups they take it every. single. time. It's astounding that they choose to put themselves into situations which they could easily avoid it by a mute/block. That being said, deleting comments that aren't spam or scammers is incredibly shady. Don't get me wrong, paying to leave a negative comment is dumb, but they aren't handling it well either.

While I'm doubtful about the game's success, I absolutely have no doubt that a portion (albeit not a lot) of people want this game to happen (there is always going to be an audience for someone SOMEWHERE.) It's a good and bad thing simultaneously. It means we can get a support for good content and then get content like this. Free market (and people trolling too, I guess).

Where the heck was THIS for the game demo? Not only is the art more consistent, the characters extra features are simplified enough to a point in which it's not absolutely obnoxious. Yeah, the designs still look like the characters walked out of an bad art gala, but at the very least they look somewhat fine. These icons would honestly work well with the texting feature they added. Hell, if they went a Mystic Messenger route and made everything texting-based at the very least the chibi icons would make sense. These are appealing enough to get away with it and yet the actual sprites in the game are so inconsistent. This is why you limit your artists or put them into groups to team up and work with. Already these icons offer something more than any of the sprites have shown so far.

have you already forgotten that the devs are a splintered branch of HVMND-229e? theyre not particularly used to human contact. well, unless you count conciliatory ocular receptors contacting quantum echolocation glands as eye contact.
